Tesco Value Worth A Try!!
Advantages: Cheap And Cheerful
Disadvantages: None
...I seem to go through biscuits at a rate of noughts in my household. I recently discovered the value range of products from Tesco and I have to say I am extremely surprised at how good and vast the range is and how much money I have saved over the last few weeks and months by switching from my usual branded items. The value selection has products which look similar to their more expensive counterparts however they can often be up to a third cheaper or even as much as half price less. In all honesty my son doesn't really notice the difference so I will continue buying these items. The product that I will review now is Tesco Value Jaffa Cakes.
These Jaffa cakes come in a box containing 24 cakes. They are around 56p and I have to say are a good alternative to the original Mcvities range which are considerably more expensive...

A cake with a difference
Advantages: Cheap, and quite yummy
Disadvantages: Can't compare to real potatoes
...On Sunday we were having Roast Pork for dinner, I asked my hubby what potato dish he'd like with the pork. I gave him the usual choices of Roast potatos, boiled, jacket, chips, mash, jacket wedges but none of these grabbed his fancy. He want something else so I suggested herb potatoes, potato gratin but he didn't fancy those either. Exasperated by him and sent him to Tesco and told him to find a potato dish to go with pork. Meanwhile, I put the pork in the oven and cleaned my kitchen.
An hour later he returns brandishing this small packet of what look like muffins. On closer inspection I discovered that these were potato cakes. I had never heard of potato cakes before my hubby arrived home with them. I was a bit skeptical about whether they would actually be suitable to replace good old roast spuds.
Upon opening the packet I...

I follow three simple rules which work every time for me and I do hope you follow my tips which I have placed between my recipes for you to enjoy your baking days rather than groaning when your cakes turn out to be a big flop. Just imagine the nice summer tea parties you will be able to have to show off your new skills to your friends and families.

The icing on the cake, for my Wedding Day
Advantages: multiple usages
Disadvantages: fattening
...We purchased this cake as the middle tier for our wedding cake, we had already obtained the top and bottom section in fruit filled traditional style from Tesco and thought the change to this Madeira cake, would make a nicer option for the younger ones.
It is stated as being Madeira, but the inside does have a light jam and cream filling, the cakes are well presented covered in a smooth royal icing top to bottom and a piped swirl pattern around the top rim.
The cake comes in a cardboard box, with plastic see through window, enabling you to spot any damage, there is also a picture of the cake sliced on the box, again enabling you to vision the inside of the cake prior to buying.
We were able then to dress the cake as appropriate for a wedding cake, but it would also make a good starter cake, for a birthday, engagement...

CHIP Off the old Cake bars
Advantages: Low sat fat, moist and full flavour
Disadvantages: none
...Tesco Chocolate Chip Cake Bars (30g)
I thought I would write a review on this product as I thought they were very appetising and good for value cake. Ok this product has around 125 calories per cake but compared to a double chocolate muffin which is around 300 calories - shocking eh, and slightly better than a chocolate HobNob Flapjack at 159 Calories. With all this in mind I don't feel guilty munching away on one of these bars - on Weight Watchers these cakes are around 2 points.
***** The Product *****
This product is made in France for TESCO Stores Ltd and are sold globally in all there stores. They are packaged in a dark red box which measures 9 inches long x 5 inches wide, with the TESCO logo in bold White writing on the top right hand corner. There is also a picture of the cake bars on the front and the daily guidelines...

I've got a Date with some Cake!
Advantages: A satisfying low-cal, low-fat option.
Disadvantages: A bit too thick and dry for my liking.
...Light Choices?
I'm not sure if I am reviewing the same product, but to be clear, I have with me the Tesco 'Light Choices' Date & Walnut Cake Slices, yum! These come 6 to a pack and have similar nutritional value per slice (70kcal, 6.5g sugar, 0.5g fat, 0.1g saturates and trace salt <1%) to the 'Healthy Living' variety.
But why the lighter choice? Well, being on a diet (for most of my life, it seems!), I have the need to curb my sweet tooth with some low-cal, low-fat alternatives and this lead me to my discovery of the 'Light Choices' cake selection by Tesco.
My Opinion
The reason I gave this product a 'satisfactory' rating was because I've had better and was a little disappointed with this cake (although I'm quite happily going to finish the packet!). I debated a little over whether or not this deserved a rating of 'good...

Have your cake and it eat with no compromise on value!
Advantages: Really cheap; lovely taste;
Disadvantages: Misleading product description
...This cake is really lovely and is now my first choice when I have a little change in my back pocket. Tesco value Raspberry sponge is basically a victoria sponge cake except the filling is with marshmallow rather than cream.
So, what's good about this product?
1. Price: It only costs 46p for a really decent sized cake
- The cake is a 14cm by 14cm circular sponge (much bigger than the Asda Smart Price Raspberry sponge). It's also about 4cm thick from top to bottom; just the right thickness to get your mouth around. For just 46p it is an absolute bargain; almost ridicously cheap. Thing is, in general, you can't really go wrong( taste wise) with sponge cakes. You could buy a fair few of these for a buffet or parties or even as a birthday cake (albeit, probably jazz it up with icing and decoration).
2. It's got Marshamallow and jam...

Chocolate Slab Cake
Advantages: Delicious taste, quite easy to make.
Disadvantages: Not very good for your waistline, or your wallet!
...stand for a few minutes, then once partially cooled I remove the cake from the tin, peel off the greaseproof paper and place on to a wire rack for cooling. I find that the cake takes around 1 hour to cool completely, then you are ready to prepare the icing.
To make your icing, melt the 200g of dark chocolate with 6 tablespoons of tap water over a very low heat (the same as when you made the chocolate mix for the cake mixture), once melted completely add the 3 tablespoons of single cream and remove from the heat. Once the cream is mixed in you add 1 tablespoon of chilled butter, then the icing is ready to be poured over the cooled cake. I find that this icing makes enough to completely ice the top of the cake and the sides also, use a palette knife to spread the icing evenly over the whole cake.
I purchase my ingredients from Tesco, I use...

Free cakes, hopefully wee wee free too!
Advantages: Very tasty, lovely colour, perfect size, these were free
Disadvantages: Second hand cakes, not good
...My brother came into our house yesterday afternoon with a bright pink cardboard box under his armpit. He put the box down on the kitchen bench and I went over to take a look. I saw that it was an unopened box of Tesco Chocolate Chip Cake Bars. He told me to help myself, so I did.
I opened the box and saw that there were five individually wrapped cake bars inside, all encased in a lovely bright red shiny wrapper. I took off the wrapping, gave it a quick sniff and sunk my teeth into a really lovely rich, moist and delicious-tasting sponge. My brother kept looking at me a bit oddly whilst I was eating it but said nothing. He then asked me how it tasted and I replied that it was really good, and asked him if he was having one. He said he might have one later and I thought nothing more of it.
I went back to have a second one...

Tasty diet cakes, mmm
Advantages: Moist, tasty and healthier than most cakes
Disadvantages: none
...I popped into my local Tesco Express after work today, for something quick and easy for tea tonight. After choosing something I found myself hovering around the small cake selection in this tiny store. I fancied a cake, but had nothing specific in mind so I spotted something that looked appealing, however, out of the corner of my eye I saw these cake slices. I opted for these because they were by far the healthier choice. A box of 6 cake slices cost me £1.02.
***The packaging***
Is a white cardboard box with the words light choices scrawled across a good portion of it. This really works at drawing us in as it is very clearly written, and also makes us think that they are better for us (than most of the cakes on show). The box also has a picture of a plate full of these delicious looking cake slices. Inside the box, is a clear, thin...
