Tewkesbury, come visit it!
Advantages: Lovely town with a mix of old and new
Disadvantages: none
...Tewkesbury is a little town located in Gloucestershire, Tewkesbury sits on the confluence (where rivers meet) of the river seven and river avon. Tewkesbury is a historic town, with lots of timber framed buildings and a maze of little alleys. Tewkesbury also has a 11th century Abbey.
There is lots to see and do in tewkesbury. Walks along the river, boat trips, shopping, visiting museums and the abbey. There is a market twice a week on a wednesday and a saturday. There is a local swimming pool, health suite and gym, located in the town.

The place formally known as Theocsbury
Advantages: Tranquil, the Abbey, steeped in history, beautiful surroundings
Disadvantages: Floods, sometimes too quiet, not a lot in terms of leisure and entertainment
...Tewkesbury, for those that have only ever seen it on the news for its floods of 2007, is a little historical town with tonnes of character and plenty of reasons to visit it. Originally named 'Theocsbury' after a man named Theoc who lived on top of a bury (a mound of earth), it has two rivers running through it, the Severn and the Avon. Which could explain the amount of flooding that occurs annually!
I was born and brought up in Tewkesbury for 18 years before I flew the nest to go to university 'oop north' and so I feel I have some knowledge to give about this place to encourage others to visit it. Probably the most famous thing about Tewkesbury (other than its floods) is its Abbey, built by one of the men who fought in the Battle of Hastings with William the Conqueror and latter bought off Henry VIII by the locals to stop him from...

I lived worked and became pregnant there
Advantages: pretty town
Disadvantages: ?
...Looking for something to write about while my husband watching football I came across the Tewkesbury category. Many years ago I lived and worked and became pregnant in Tewkesbury.
This town has I believed changed little since those days.
Tewkesbury is a small town at the point where the rivers Avon and Severn meet. It is a long thin town sandwiched between the river and the M5.
This town has many timbered buildings mostly in the high street. A Benedictine Abbey built as a monastery at the end of the 11c is the pride of the town.
Since 1967 Tewkesbury has been a conservation area. So still has an air of an old town
The town has a shoe shop, a children?s clothes shop, a bicycle repair shop (while we lived there we owned a tandem and cycled the surrounding countryside.) a butchers, a chocolate shop, jewellers, a fishing...

A Sleepy Little Town Steeped in History
Advantages: Lots of history all around you
Disadvantages: Sunday closing does apply here
...On 20 September 2003 I was very fortunate to find myself being invited to my friend's birthday party at the Puckrup Hall Hilton Hotel, Puckrup, near Tewkesbury.
The Hotel was lovely, a large Georgian Mansion (where the functions are held), then leading up to the main part of the Hotel. A large airy lobby awaits. Rooms are of the usual Hilton standard - lovely marble bathrooms, comfortable beds - with all the usual perks of iron press, food available throughout the night etc. Our room overlooked the fountain and golf course area.
The Hotel boasts a golf course, fitness room, small swimming pool, jacuzzi (which was out of action when I stayed), and a sauna.
There are many function rooms, the bar area leads out onto a patio area overlooking the golf course, very peaceful and relaxing.
The breakfast was ample, fresh fruit...

~Luscious Lamb With A Crust.~
Advantages: Tender, Succulent and Totally Additive Free.
Disadvantages: May Not be Suitable For Some.
...the difficult task of deciding what to have, should we go for the tried and tested or opt for something of theirs we hadn't yet sampled.
After a few ums and errs, we chose this Lamb Topside with Tewkesbury mustard crust from their Cook range. "Tender Succulent Lamb with a Cheddar and Tangy Mustard Crust was just too difficult to resist and at £5.99 for 380g it seemed rather good value too.
£5.99 buys you two generous sized pieces of lamb each measuring 6x3 inches and approximately 1 inch thick. The thickness of the topping crust being around 1cm.
As were already in my idea of food heaven we also decided to treat our self to yet another Coquille St. Jacques (see my earlier review for more details on these, not a tout honest)
Arriving home, I checked the recommended cooking instructions to enable me to calculate what time I would need to don...

Not a nice stay
Advantages: It's convenient to Cheltenham, and is probably the only Hilton for miles. Quaint.
Disadvantages: Worn-out, shoddy service, questionable eateries, exorbitant prices, ineffective staff, bugs.
...My husband and I have stayed at Puckrup Hall on several occassions over the last three or four years, and were looking forward to our current stay. In fact, on this trip to England, we stayed here twice. Our first stay was fine, though it was obvious from the beginning that they were shorthanded; it was difficult to get maid service, and they forgot our newspaper most days.
Our second stay was close to disaster.
What to Expect
The Hilton Puckrup is an isolated hotel, about a 10 minute drive from Tewkesbury, which is the only other place to eat.
The hotel consists of the old Puckrup Hall, and the newer section with the lobby, newer rooms, and recreational facilities.
Under no circumstance should you agree to stay in the old Hall.
Our first night, they put us in a room which did not have the Internet access they promised. It...

Flooding catastrophe - lessening the damage
Advantages: Build barrier across Avon and Severn flood plain.
Disadvantages: Weather is an uncontrollable factor.
...Despite technological advance, completely accurate weather forecasting is still impossible to achieve. Approaching rain, and thus the possibility of flooding, will be seen on the charts but the interpretation of such information over the expanse of the whole United Kingdom can only be hit and miss at best.
Had town planners and those who hold sway on council planning authorities used more foresight twenty years ago when many new estates were constructed on known flood plains, probably in return for the proposing builder's promise to build a new roundabout or business park, then the recent severe flooding seen in Tewkesbury and the Cotswolds would not have caused such terrible damage to homes and lives.
It is widely accepted that global warming is here to stay and this will result in warmer, wetter weather across the United Kingdom...

Preparing For Disaster
Advantages: Acting proactively to prevent disasters
Disadvantages: Waiting for something to happen before we act
...get either to or from work. The news that nearby Tewkesbury had similar issues was of no surprise. I spent Saturday doing the usual dull things, I wrote a review, I watched some films, I took a good 2 hour soak in the bath while rather dangerously playing my PSP. Everything was normal, Cheltenham was normal, Bishops Cleeve was normal, Tewkesbury was normal, Gloucester was normal.
Sunday 22nd of July and about 2pm my friend Mandy sent me a text message, the message was simple ?The water supply in chelt an cleeve is being turned off?; I sent a message back ?oh why?? was my reply. To which Mandy seemed none the wiser, it appeared there was a repair issue at the Mithe water treatment plant (what we later discovered was that the plant was actually under the water). Having walked around Bishop?s Cleeve Mandy came back to me saying that...

BP Garage
Advantages: 24 hour, close to M5, cashpoint, lorry area,
Disadvantages: Faulty air/vaccum machines, bit expensive
...Well, Ashchurch nr Tewkesbury is my old hometown, so I felt that I should probably review this here petrol station to give it a local's point of view. It's situated very closely to Junction 9 of the M5, so if you're running out of petrol/diesel after a long journey then it's in an excellent spot to stop off and top up. It's also very close to a large industrial estate so caters well for lorrys as well with a separate area for them to fill up.
There's a small amount of parking on the site as well for those who require other facilities that the garage has to offer other than petrol. And of course an air and vaccum area. Though these tend to be faulty at times I've found, so be careful. There is also a cash point to the side of the building, which has been a saviour at various times on my way for a night out because there isn't another...
