The Thames Barrier

Advantages: saves London from flooding
Disadvantages: looks quite ugly

...I first saw the Thames Barrier when I was taken on a pleasure boat trip up the River Thames as a young lad by my parents, I remember being intrigued by it and began quizzing my father all about which I'm sure he was delighted with! The Thames Barrier is a flood control measure spanning the width of the river. Apparently it has been used over one hundred times and as recently as March of last year. When looking at the barrier it is quite impressive even if it is rather ugly! At the point which it has been built the river is over five hundred yards wide. The barrier covers this complete section and breaks the river into four different sections, each approximately two hundred feet in length. When looking at the barrier above sea-level it doesn't appear to be a barrier at all, just four Sydney opera house shaped structures spanning...

Dine Like a Mogul in Walton-on-Thames

Advantages: Excellent food and service. Convivial atmosphere. Value for money.
Disadvantages: A little off the beaten track, but otherwise none to speak of.

...INTRODUCTION In times past, one of the first things I tried to establish as soon as I moved into a new area was the quality of the various Indian and Chinese establishments in the neighbourhood. Fortunately, although my devotion to the Slimming World plan has significantly reduced the frequency of nights out to local eateries, I discovered excellent Mogul well before my self-imposed exile from oriental cuisine. As it happens, with a bit of common sense, a sympathetic chef and judicious menu choices, a night out at the curry house need not be a calorific disaster. GETTING THERE The Mogul anchors a parade of shops on Terrace Road, just past Cottimore Lane, on the Molesey side of Walton-on-Thames. It?s around a ten minute walk from the bottom of the High Street. Unfortunately, the only realistic option is to drive there...

One of the Great Attractions of the Thames

Advantages: Interesting. Architectural & Engineering Feat
Disadvantages: Not many

...One of the greatest attractions that London has is the River Thames.including the highly impressive Thames Barrier in the east of the river. Unfortunately this great river has not always been fully appreciated but I think it gives London a wonderful recreational and aethetic asset which at long last is being better realised. The Barrier itself is worth a visit and there is a Museum if you want to dig deeper into its role, history and such like. Long ago the Romans recognised the great importance of the Thames and as Britain became the leading industrial and commercial nation in the world this fine river played a very important role. The produce from numerous countries around the world was transported along the Thames to the London docks and equally produce from the"workshop of the World" found its way to many different parts...

Imperial Hotel, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire

Advantages: Nice location, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Small rooms

...I have been making regular trips to High Wycombe, and have struggled to find accommodation which is nice and reasonably priced. This is a fairly expensive part of the world, and the Travel Inns in the area are booked up 3-4 weeks in advance. After identifying the site: http://www.4hotels.co.uk - Worth a visit if you are struggling for somewhere to stay when travelling, the site lists an excellent range of primarily B&B's, but also hotels throughout the UK. From here I discovered The Imperial Hotel, Henley-on-Thames, which I was advised was a very upmarket and expensive town. The hotel is described as ".....this imposing, classical Edwardian building is situated in the Thames Valley in Royal Henley on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, which is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty....". PRICES Three single rooms...

Thumbs up for Thames

Advantages: Efficient, polite
Disadvantages: none

...Usually when I have to deal with sorting bills out over the phone, it is a long and frustrating experience that takes months to sort out. Not so with Thames. I made two phone calls and everything was sorted. They sent me a detailed and clearly labelled bill, and have been taking the correct amount out my account since. When I have paid the bill for the year they send me an update and again clearly labelled instructions as to what I should do next, or how much money will be coming out of my account. And they are reasonably priced too. There staff are always polite and efficient, a rariety in these circumstances. They phone me up to update me, rather than the other way round....

A Taste of the Thames.

Advantages: A consistently good and traditional bitter.
Disadvantages: Not always available in the Midlands or North of the UK.

...also be purchased in around 1,000 other outlets around the country ~ whether as a regular or Guest Ale, or on the shelves of your local supermarket in bottles. So, Chiswick Bitter is a great example of a good quality traditional bitter that I have come to expect from Fullers. It is tasty and fresh, without being too strong or heavy. I would recommend it as an excellent choice for an afternoon session, or for a consistently good quality beer during an evening out. Give it a go and experience the true taste of the Thames! ***I wouldn't recommend to try drinking REAL Thames water though! May not be quite so good! LOL**** ~~~Brewery Details. Belfast On Thames

Advantages: Great value for money; children go free
Disadvantages: On board direction signs could be clearer

...One fine Spring Saturday lunchtime found me and my fourteen year old son wandering along the South Bank of the Thames in London with time on our hands prior to watching football. As we ambled eastwards between London Bridge and Tower Bridge looking for somewhere to have a beer in order to kill time we came across the grey bows of a medium sized warship. It was HMS Belfast, the World War II Naval Destroyer now residing permanently on the Thames, a monument almost in itself. HMS Belfast was launched at The Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast in March 1938 and commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1939. A modified Southampton class light cruiser she is 613 feet long, and has a standard displacement of 11,553 tons. She has twelve six inch guns, eight four inch, and twelve Bofors anti aircraft guns. In her day she had a top speed of thirty...

the scenic route home.

Advantages: direct lines, frequent
Disadvantages: trains that split, unhelpful staff, long journeys, pricier than some.

...I don't drive, and I'm a student in London, so I use the train a LOT. Thames Trains are responsible for trains between London Paddington and Worcester / Leamington Spa (where?), which I use on a fairly regular basis to go 'home'. I also use Thames between London and Reading. Firstly I should just note the alternatives to Thames on this specific route from London to the West Midlands. There's Silverlink, aka the trains of Satan, which go from Euston to Birmingham New Street. I try to avoid them like the plague - just look at the ciao ops on that company for more infomation on WHY. There's the overpriced Virgin trains, which run on the same line as Silverlink but at twice the speed and are always being cancelled. Then there's Chiltern trains from Marylebone to Birmingham and onto Stourbridge / Kidderminster. They would be great, but...

Bridge Over The River Thames

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...The Dartford River Crossing is one of those landmarks that I take for granted. Living not far from the M25, and using the tunnel on a reasonably regular basis, it has become purely and simply a means of getting across the Thames with the least amount of hassle. It was only when some friends visited from up north that I realised quite how much I took it for granted. They had never seen it before, only in pictures, and were looking forward to actually driving across/through it. They had no idea about how long it had been there, how much it cost, nor about who actually ran it, so I ended up having to tell them everything I knew about it. I guess that must be what has prompted me to write this review, as I?m sure there are many people out there that may be unaware of many aspects of the crossing. ** BRIEF HISTORY ** It was...
