One of the Great Attractions of the Thames
Review of The Thames Barrier, London by
ashford
Advantages: Interesting. Architectural & Engineering Feat
Disadvantages: Not many
...of the world.
Despite the decline of the docks at long last planners have realised the great potential for urban regeneration that could be realised through the refurbishment of the Docklands. Some very imaginative and quality developments have taken place in the docklands, including good housing, vibrant commercial and recreational developments and the construction of London City airport.
The transportation infrastructure has been improved with the London Docklands railway and the Jubilee Line extension and on the South Bank of the river,a cultural renaissance has taken place. Particularly noteworthy has been the development of the Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern.
Increasingly too the Thames has been cleaned up and is arguably among the cleanest rivers in any of the urban areas of Western Europe. Salmon and other fish species have...

Imperial Hotel, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire
Review of Imperial Hotel (Henley on Thames) by
sue.51
Advantages: Nice location, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Small rooms
...I have been making regular trips to High Wycombe, and have struggled to find accommodation which is nice and reasonably priced. This is a fairly expensive part of the world, and the Travel Inns in the area are booked up 3-4 weeks in advance.
After identifying the site: http://www.4hotels.co.uk - Worth a visit if you are struggling for somewhere to stay when travelling, the site lists an excellent range of primarily B&B's, but also hotels throughout the UK. From here I discovered The Imperial Hotel, Henley-on-Thames, which I was advised was a very upmarket and expensive town. The hotel is described as
".....this imposing, classical Edwardian building is situated in the Thames Valley in Royal Henley on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, which is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty....".
PRICES
Three single rooms...

Life in the City
Review of City University London by
garbadine
Advantages: Being in the heart of London, diversity of its students
Disadvantages: The Union, facilities
...I studied at City for 3 years, and have to say I enjoyed my time there very much. It was very daunting at first - arriving as a fresher, first time away from home, family & friends into a pretty harsh looking concrete jungle.
I spent my first year in halls (Finsbury Hall) which was definitely the rigth decision. Although the rooms are nothing to write home about, and neither is the 'meals' provided for those with catered accommodation, the social aspect, location and relative cheapness of rent more than makes up for it! Located just off Goswell Road, you are around 5-10 minutes walk from the main part of the University, about 30 minutes walk to Oxford street and the West End, and with some of London's most famous landmarks are within 20 minutes walk (St. Pauls, the Guildhall, the Thames).
Needless to say, being in London...

Thumbs up for Thames
Review of Thames Water Utilities by
stoofer
Advantages: Efficient, polite
Disadvantages: none
...Usually when I have to deal with sorting bills out over the phone, it is a long and frustrating experience that takes months to sort out. Not so with Thames. I made two phone calls and everything was sorted. They sent me a detailed and clearly labelled bill, and have been taking the correct amount out my account since.
When I have paid the bill for the year they send me an update and again clearly labelled instructions as to what I should do next, or how much money will be coming out of my account. And they are reasonably priced too.
There staff are always polite and efficient, a rariety in these circumstances. They phone me up to update me, rather than the other way round....

Beautiful University City
Review of Oxford in general by
buzios
Advantages: Beautiful, Historic, Charming
Disadvantages: Busy at times, Lots of tourists
...Is there a more beautiful city in these isles than Oxford? Well, I cannot claim to have been to all of the them but of those cities that I have visited Oxford is my favourite by far.
Many years ago I lived in Oxford and have very fond memories of it. Of course, when you live in a place you tend to take it a bit for granted and you do not tend to visit it's tourist attractions.
However, recently I decided to take my wife and 2 sons (aged 9 and 4) to Oxford for a few days to show them the city that I had loved so much and also to remind myself and look at it from the point of view of a vistor, of which Oxford has many.
So what I hope to achieve here is to give some flavour of Oxford from the point of view of a visitor who may go for a day or a few days. I would suggest that you need more than one day to make your trip worthwhile...

City Twitching
Review of Wetland Centre (London) by

Advantages: Birds, other creatures, and the overall vision of the place
Disadvantages: You need the time to do it justice
....
GETTING THERE & OTHER PRACTICALITIES
The site is on the banks of the Thames in Barnes.
For those of reasonable mobility let me recommend my own route:
from anywhere in the capital take the tube to Hammersmith (stations on Hammersmith & City, Piccadilly and District lines).
on exiting the station, pause and seek out the narrow white tourist directional signs and follow that for Hammersmith Bridge (I'll spare you the bit where I went the wrong way up Hammersmith Road and got as far as Olympia before realising!)
enjoy the bridge on your way across - a testament in itself to the exuberance of Victorian engineering, and if the tide is out there'll be an introduction to the local wildfowl plodging about in the mudflats below - with good light (it can truly sparkle here especially in low autumn sunshine you might want...

Lost in Sim City
Review of Sim City 4 (PC) by
delawney
Advantages: Playability
Disadvantages: Addictive
...*** THE SHORT VERSION (FOR THOSE IN A HURRY - AND BECAUSE I APPEAR TO HAVE WITTERED ON SOMEWHAT!) ***
The latest in a succession of successful "God" games based on creating and running your own city, Sim City 4 is definitely a cut above it's previous incarnations. It maintains the same addictive qualities, but has managed to eradicate some of the slightly more irritating aspects of the game.
It is beautiful to look at, fairly easy to pick up and highly playable. The features and levels of the games have expanded, enabling you to appreciate the game on both a large (regional) and a small (individual person) level.
It will take up masses of space and drain your memory, and small elements of the game can still become irritating, but on the whole it is fantastic fun and will keep you amused for ages. Comes with the delawney seal...

The City of Spires
Review of Oxford (England) by
jonwhite
Advantages: Vibrant and historic. A mix of ancient and modern. Good public transport
Disadvantages: Bad for parking
...Where shall I begin, Oxford is a truly magnificent city and it is where I lived for 18 years before moving to Essex. I therefore feel qualified to give an opinion and guide to England’s primary seat of learning.
Oxford is a beautiful city of cloistered college grounds, pinnacled towers, walks, parks, rivers and provides the visitor with an historic and educational feast.
The city is built around the river Thames, know locally as the river Isis. To the East of the city is the river Cherwell which flows by Magdalen College and the Botanical Gardens. The river provides some excellent punting.
It was the Saxon’s who first settled here at the site of a ford on the Isis, these cattle drovers drove their oxen to the area, liked what they saw and settled. This is where Oxford derives it's name.
The university...

Four nights, two cities, one incredible swing band
Review of Budapest (Hungary) by
Discobunny
Advantages: Thermal baths - comforting, healing, good-value and fun.
Disadvantages: Not as cheap as everyone proclaims.
...the infamous ‘Airport Minibus’ desk. This nifty facility means that you get transported to any address in the city for a happy £7.80 return, taking the hassle out of foreign-country, strange-language, dark-night accommodation location.
Based in the Castle District in Buda on the western side of the Danube, we soon found our way across the river (a bit like the Thames, only less grotty) in search of the shops, restaurants and general social life of the plainer, flatter Pest. As warned by roonsy, the main drag, Vaci Utca, whilst unquestionably the centre of Budapest’s shops and restaurants, features prices not disimilar to the UK – which, in a city famed for being bargaintastic for us Brits, is not a welcome sight. Still, if you can side-step the pushy Hungarians ready to pounce on lost-looking tourists and lure them...
