THASSOS THE EMERALD ISLE

Disadvantages: Had to come home.

...We decided on Thassos this year, we were going to go to KOS but that fell by the wayside due to the XL Failure that dragged KOSMAR down. So as THASSOS is the most northernly of the Greek Islands we chose to go in June, normally we holiday in May. On the run up to the holiday I kept checking the weather to find in May the tempretaures were in the 80's and sunny days, would it change. As it turned out we had two weeks of wall to wall sunshine. Not many Britsh Holiday firms go into Thassos, so we booked with Thomson's, one that does, and I have to say did it very well. It was a Sunday day flight (07:05) from Birmingham, landing in Kavala at 12:20 Local Time. Transfer from Kavala Airport to the little port of Keramoti took about 20 Mins on the Coach. A Super Time In Thassos

Advantages: Quite, yet lively as well.
Disadvantages: Someimes a little on the hot side.

...Seven days on Thassos which felt like seven weeks we did so much. A few pointers for others heading that way: 1) Garden Studios, Thassos, is well located, but the rooms in the back block are incredibly airless. No aircon, but no fans either. Poor design means nights of passion-sapping heat that never goes away. Head for the verandah for a cool night (or if you don't want to share the twin room no more!), but mind those mozzies. Bottom line: pay the extra for air con, especially if you are there for 14 nights. 2)Get scooters! It's fantastic to explore to island. Cost you about £38 for 6 days. And filling up the tank costs £1.50. Roads safe, and just the best fun. Also, for those who haven't used them before, they're dead easy to drive. Try 'Billies Scooters'. He's a top bloke. 3)At the back of Thassos town there is a walk up...

Thassos Town, Greece - Fabulous!

Advantages: Quiet, fabulous beaches, cheap food, local greek atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not good for clubbers, 18-30 type holidays

...We stayed at the George Hotel in Thassos Town for one week in mid September 2004. Although the George Hotel is very basic (more like self catering apartments without the self catering facilities!), it was kept spotlessly clean. We were on B&B basis, but didn't have breakfast there so can't comment! The pool is gorgeous, as is the pool area and pool bar. Lovely family run atmosphere - again very clean. The pool bar isn't always open late (10:00 p.m. onwards), but this wasn't a problem as there is a lovely friendly bar right next to the hotel called the Atlas Bar, which stays open very late as do all the other bars in Thassos Town. If you go to the Atlas Bar, look out for a gorgeous cat called Rabbit! If you get one of the front facing upstairs rooms (2 floors) you will have a lovely balcony overlooking the pool. Thassos the way to do it!

Advantages: Fantastic senery, good food, great people, quiet, value for money, a true peice of paradise!
Disadvantages: None that I could name...but could be too quiet for some

...My wife and I recently visited the beautiful island of Thassos for our summer holiday. We had everything on our doorstep and couldn't have asked for more! We've been to a few of the Greek islands and also to Spain and the Canaries, but nowhere matches up to the beauty of this wonderful island. The locals were friendly and spoke VERY good English. The food was delightful and inexpensive, our accomodation was clean, tidy, spacious and above all comfortable. The sky was constantly blue (except at night!?) and the weather was fabulous, (a constant 28-30 degrees) comfortable and what a great tan! With Thassos town minutes away, the great Ipsario Mountain to the rear of the apartments, a fantastic beach 3 minutes walk away and a promanade of tavernas as far as the eye can see there is a great choice of activities. A great place to holiday

...I visited Thassos a few years back, but was so impressed with it, I felt I had to write a review to encourage others to visit. We went to Thassos on one of those last minute package tour holidays with Thomson's, and only paid £175 each for 14 nights, in a self catering studio apartment at the Glyfada apartments, just outside Thassos town. A bit about the island: Population: 16,000 Thassos lies 10km off the coast of mainland Greece. Its nearest port is Kavala, which is the far east of the country. The island has a 91km perimeter road It is almost circular in shape, and is described by the Greek Tourist Board, as the Emerald Isle. It is very green, with a lot of coniferous forest. Advantages: Those Views over the breakfast table.
Disadvantages: Little Mythos at 2.5 Euros.

...I will start the review where we started from Birmingham Airport. The Holiday was run by Thomson's. You depart Birmingham on the 07:00 flight Sunday morning, the flight to Kavala is about 3 hrs 15 mins, so with time difference ( 2 hrs) you land approx 12:15 local time. Passport control was a quick wave thru, only two Carosels, quite a small but modern airport. Luggage arrives, 50 meter walk to rep who points you to your bus, ours was BUS "D". By the Bus are little signs of the Resort Accomodations names, so in our case (ni pun intended) we place our cases there, the luggage is taken across to Thassos for you in small vans. We are put on BUS D and taken on a 20 min drive to the little port Town of Keramoti. Here you have about 30-40 mins before the ferry departs. The rep will point out which one and stays there, in...

SYRTAKI A GREAT LITTLE TAVERNA WITH A BIG WELCOME.

Advantages: Beach Side Dining on Fresh Well Cooked Dishes.
Disadvantages: Had to come home.

...We have just returned from two very hot weeks in Thassos, we decided to go in June rather than May as Thassos is the most northernly of the Greek islands. When we are away we usually try and go to a different Taverna for about the first 8 nights and then revisit our favourites for the remaining nights. The first night we went to TWINS taverna in the town, which I will review later. Most of our following nights were spent at the SYRTAKI which alone speaks for itself. At the East end of Thassos Town is the Old Port area, we feel this is the the better area to go in the evenings and in fact during the day. That's more like a greek island

Advantages: More like the real greek island with a hint of commercialism
Disadvantages: May be too quiet if you are a wild child

...We went to Thassos about 8 years ago so things may have changed a bit.Let's hope not for the worst.We flew from Manchester travelling in early September.After arriving at the airport we were taken by coach for a 1/2 hour dirve to the ferry crossing to Thassos island. We were not particularly looking forward to this as it's the first one we've done and were expecting delays and hassle.I am pleased to say it was totally painless.We were dropped of at the ferry by a local taverna.Here we spent a relaxing 1/2 hour having a quiet drink whilst waiting for the ferry.I had packed shorts and a thin top in my hand luggage so used this time to truly get into holiday mode.I was glad of this as despite being Sept it was very warm.   A week in Limenaria

...I'll start this review by stating that what you are going to read is based on my experience of a small area of the island of Thassos, during an incredibly relaxing holiday in late June/early July 2002. It would be exceeding difficult to predict exactly what your holiday would be like, but here is my story (probably with a fair dash of the 'glib biography' in an attempt to keep folks interested). Relax in the Sun

Advantages: Quiet, Relaxing, Good Food, Reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Don't go here if you are looking for night clubs and discos

...My partner and I spent two weeks in Thassos at the end of June/beginning of July 2006. We had a wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quiet relaxing break in the sun. The Journey We have been to a number of Greek Islands before, but had been put off visiting Thassos because there is no airport and you have to transfer to the island via ferry. Don't let this deter you. The transfers in both directions are extremely well organised and there is very little time waiting around. The ferry port is only fifteen minutes from the airport and the ferry crossing is only thirty five minutes. Upon arrival at the port boarding the ferry is almost instantaneous and it leaves within a few minutes. You arrive on the island at the port of Thassos Town, where you board another bus for between 15 to 30 minutes to arrive...
