The Barking Dog, Lesbian and Gay Pub, Newcastle

...I went to the Barking Dog on friday 26th June. The atmosphere was very friendly. We went upstairs and it was more lesbian than gay. There was karakoe on when we were there and the crowd there was probably about the least stuck up and most down to Earth in the gay village. The bouncers were also friendly. We left just before 1am and it was still open. I am a gay man and went there with my partner who I have been dating for almost a year. It was nice that in the Barking dog is not a cruisey place and its not bitchy either, although it is still a gay pub and with it being more lesbian the mans toilets were nice and quiet! PRICES Bottles of VK were on offer for £1.75 a bottle. Cocktails were also reasonably priced. However the prices of the pints were as expensive as most of the other gay pubs in town. Review of Barking Dog (Newcastle)

Dogs were barking

Advantages: Great music, lyrics, completely enjoyable
Disadvantages: none really

...Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike is probably Gogol Bordello's most well known album and it's certainly the most organised of the albums and probably the best one to date actually. Released in October 2005 by Side One Dummy, it's there 3rd album. Starting off with the manic "Sally", before moving to the upbeat "I Would Never Wanna Be Young Again" and the quirky eclectic anthem "Not a Crime" which sounds like Dillinger being held hostage by drunk KGB officers, then it moves on to the simple but effective "Immigrant Punk" which could easily be The Clash, then on to Go Revolutions which has a slight Manu Chao sound at the beginning but actually sounds a bit disjointed later on. After this you have the quiet and humorous Avenue B before moving on to the superb "Dogs Were Barking" which is incredibly catchy and probably the best wedding...

Bark Psychosis

...Even less people will have heard of this band than some of the others I've reviewed... but they deserve a mention, in fact they deserve more than a mere mention... Bark Psychosis started as a teenage band in the late 80s, who took a number of years to find their feet and their "true calling" as it were, eventually settling down to produce some of the most original, genre-defying work of the last fifteen years. Their music really is that original. That's not to say it's in any ay unlistenable, or completely experimental- the songs are recognisably structured- but in truth the band defies any pigeonholing. Review of Bark Psychosis

Barking Mad but a Grrrrrrrrrrrrreat Game

Advantages: Fun for all ages
Disadvantages: A bit expensive

The prizes are all frivolous ones designed to entertain the assembled company - such as oddball books (collections of jokes, myths, strange facts etc), small musical instruments, magic tricks and games. This year one of the prizes which caused great hilarity was the "Beware of the Dog" game. It was one of the two STAR prizes and to my embarrassment I won it but donated it to my daughter as her brother had acquired the other - a stylophone. This game is an offering from Flair Leisure Products, the British company probably best known for Sylvanian Families, Sticklebricks, Plasticine and Etch a Sketch. It's similar to Buckeroo but it features a dog instead of a mule and players must remove items as opposed to adding them. What sort of a dog is it?

Advantages: Small, happy and adaptable

...It is fun having a new puppy and if only I had a pound for every time people have asked me what breed my new puppy is I would be a rich woman. In fact when I answer, as I sometimes do, that he is a Powderpuff I get some very strange responses indeed. So to wind back the clock a bit I have always loved dogs, years ago I used to breed and show Great Danes but I gave that up when I got divorced and got the 'pensioners' to live with me and my ex had the breeding animals. Not that I am complaining, I adored my pensioners and in any event as I had to work full time at that point it was kinder to let them live out their lives and when they died I thought it wasn't fair to have another dog. In order to satisfy my love of animals I got a cat and for the last 20+ years life has been simple, just me and the cats to worry about...

...***** Crufts ***** It was only a matter of time before I commented on the "World's Greatest Dog Show" and here it is. Indeed, it does exactly what it says on the tin - dog's and people from around the world, it's the greatest as there's no substitute for the luxurious green carpet, it has dogs and it's a show. Well, that's it then. Review finished. Actually, I think not. It's incomprehensible how much is crammed into the NEC in the four days that Crufts runs. STOP THEM DOGS BARKING

Advantages: Soft, supple, fresh feet
Disadvantages: Greasy so takes time to work in

...After my first day visiting Edinburgh - a city guaranteed to lacerate even the hardiest feet - I was desperately in need of a remedy for my aching, blistering, cracking and smelling feet. So I nipped into Boots and headed for the Scholl counter, figuring that if Dr. S couldn't sort me out, no one could. I bought Scholl Deep Moisturiser, went straight back to my B&B (another arduous walk uphill), soaked my by now throbbing extremities and applied this cream. It is marvellous stuff. It's very thick and smells sort of medicinal but perfumey at the same time. Texture wise it's rather greasy, so it takes some elbow grease to really work it in and get it to disappear into the skin. This isn't as bad as it sounds, though, because it means you're giving those tired old dogs a reviving massage at the same time. If you leave your feet...

Dogs might Fly!

...My three year old recently received this delightful book in her BookStart pack which all three year olds get and it is fast becoming one of her favourites. We already own quite a few Jez Alborough books so we were very happy to add this to our collection. The main character in this story is an adorable little dog called Sid. Something amazing happens to Sid when he is on his way to school one day because he starts to fly! It's a fantastic experience and he can't quite believe it. Unfortunately when he gets to school no one else believes him either. Sadly, when he tries to fly again he finds that, with everyone watching, he cannot do it and goes home a very sad little puppy.
