Painting a picture of Renaissance Florence
Review of Birth of Venus - Sarah Dunant by
duskmaiden
Advantages: rich descriptions of Florence, a page turner
Disadvantages: embarrasing sex scenes, overuseof similes
...The Renaissance must surely be one of the most important periods in art history. Just think of the major works such as Michaelangelo's David, DaVinci's Last Supper and Botticelli's Birth of Venus.
I would love to go and see some of the major art galleries of the world to see these works with the Uffizi in Florence at the top of my list. Luckily I have recently had a taste of Renaissance Florence due to reading a wonderful novel called "The Birth of Venus" by Sarah Dunant.
"Birth of Venus" is set in late fifteenth and early sixteenth Florence. The plot revolves around the main character Alessandra Cecchi the younger teenage daughter of a nouveau riche cloth merchant . The book is about her fascination with the new forms of art introduced into Florence and more specifically her fascination and developing relationship...

The genius of the Gillette Venus
Review of Gillette Venus by
Moneypenny
Advantages: leaves legs smooth, easy to use, no cuts, smooth legs
Disadvantages: bit expensive, blades are a bit expensive (but well worth the money)
...Gillette should definitely pat themselves on the back for this one..several times! I bought the Venus razor a few months ago as I got a free mini Gillette shaving foam and body puff in a pretty silver container with it free too. It was money well spent indeed!
I have quite hairy legs and my hair is black which makes it even more noticeable. Pity me. I have endlessly tried so many different ways of removing my leg hair from shaving to sugaring to waxing to exfoliating scrubs and the lot. I thought I'd finally found the best way to keep my legs hair free with the Philips Satinelle epilator (I have written an opinion on this too if you're interested) which worked at first but has lead to the problem of ingrowing hairs.
When the Venus first came out, I was reluctant to buy it as it seemed a bit expensive (£5.69 for razor including 2...

Gillette Venus
Review of Gillette Venus by
sweetfire_01
Advantages: Takes months to have to replace a blade, and still keeps my legs smooth and moisturized.
Disadvantages: To some people...the cost.
...I had bought the new Gillette Venus when it first came onto the market about five months ago. I basically bought it because it was a new product and I liked the idea of a womans razor having three blades. I was blessed with very thick hair, but it is thick on my legs too (not a blessing).
My personal experience with the new Gillette Venus has been very positive! The Venus has a pivoting head for those hard to shave areas like your knees, under arms and bikini area and since the head pivots it is very hard to knick or cut yourself. The handle on the Venus is shaped to fit your hand which makes holding and gripping easily done in the shower, even when your hands are soapy. Venus is a pretty blue color (and to those who are wondering) I haven't seen any other colors out yet! The Gillette Venus also gives you a nice plastic case holder...

Venus the true goddess of shaving
Review of Gillette for Women Venus by
Paula_23_uk
Advantages: Cuts down on your shaving time and leaves your skin soft and silky smooth.
Disadvantages: It is a bit pricey but is well worth the money.
...Face facts girls -shaving is a pain in the proverbial ass but it just has to be done. After thousands of hairs being washed down the plug hole and some painful cuts to the legs, I have found a razor that beats all others. The Gillette Venus is a god send!
The advert first interested me in this razor as it described the ultimate shave. I just had to give it a try, if I lost any more blood from cuts on my legs then I would surely become anemic! So I took myself off to Tesco - just because I get clubcard points there and looked for the razor that would change my life!
It didn't take me long to spot the Gillette Venus in it's splendid packaging - a little too much spent on this I think - as it sat in its blue plastic packet just calling my name. I didn't even look at the price as I just had to try this razor but it is quite...

Well done Venus
Review of Venus Williams (USA) by
Mikew79
Advantages: Powerful game
Disadvantages: None
...Congratulations to Venus Williams for retaining her title against the plucky Justine Henin at Wimbledon today. When Venus ran away with the first set I thought that the match would be over very quickly but Justine did really well to level matters in the second set. It was really impressive to see Venus continue to concentrate and take the deciding set, as the momentum was with her Belgian opponent.
We all know about the power that Venus brings to her game but today she played with guile and intelligence too particularly as Justine beat her when they last played on clay in Germany. I believe that Venus now overtakes Martina Hingis as the world number one as a result of her victory today.
Venus has an intimidating presence on court and, in my view, Justine didn't come off her baseline enough to challenge her at the net. Venus has...

Old love for Venus rising
Review of Venus DVD by
MAFARRIMOND
Advantages: Superb performances. Beautiful soundtrack.
Disadvantages: Too many close-ups. A little shudder-inducing in parts.
...Despite eight nominations for best actor in the Academy Award, Peter O'Toole has never actually won an Oscar. Incredible, considering some of the memorable and well-loved roles he has played during his forty+ year film career (remember Lawrence of Arabia and the Man of Le Mancha - to name but two). His latest nomination was only this year in 2007 for his role in the film Venus.
Venus was not (in my opinion) one of O'Toole's finest roles or one his more endearing. Without O'Toole however, the film would have been lacking. It was O'Toole's screen presence that carried the film and made what could have been a faux-pas into something strangely absorbing and worth watching.
Venus is the result of collaboration between screenwriter Hanif Kureishi and director Roger Michell. This is the second film the pair have made together...

Venus No I in My Book
Review of Venus Williams (USA) by
ashford
Advantages: Power. Good court game. Good strokes. Mentally tough
Disadvantages: Occasional lapses of concentration
...Venus Williams, the young tennis star from the USA,is not ranked as No I on the ARP tour circuit, however,in my book, she is the best female tennis player in the world today.
Buoyed by victories in the US Open and the 2000 Wimbledon champinships, Venus, entered the recently concluded Wimbledon tournament as the favourite. Despite having some tough opponents along the way Venus showed a clean pair of heels to them all,and once again emerged as a very worthy champion.
Venus,of course, has a very powerful serve and volley game but additionally she is a good stroke player, has fine court craft and for such a tall young lady,is very nimble around the court. She is also mentally very tough, a quality she clearly displayed in her semi final against Lindsay Davemport and in the final versus the rising young star from Belgium, Justine Henin...

To the moon and back,or just to Venus.
Review of Gillette Venus by
MOOPINK
Advantages: Great at removing hairs
Disadvantages: A bit on the expensive side
...After trying many a razor,I have now found one that I will probably stick with for a long time.
The razor is none other than Gillette Venus.
The name itself tempted me to buy it,it is so "out of this world".
I detest disposable razors,with a passion!!!
I have always had trouble with them cutting my legs to shreds, nick here, nick there, nick everywhere!
Venus is my saviour though, although admittedly I do still suffer from the odd nick, but that is generally because of me rather than the razor.
My legs are now well and truly cut free and I even feel brave enough to venture out with my legs on show, weather permitting of course.
I love the first day after shaving when my legs and underarms are soft and smooth with no sign of stubble.
How awful are prickly legs?
Though the problem with shaving for me is how quickly...

Men are from Mars - Johnson's from Venus Isle
Review of Venus Isle - Eric Johnson (Rock) by
BlueMidget
Advantages: An album for guitarists and music fans alike
Disadvantages: Johnson is often overshadowed by more "popular" guitarists
...Eric Johnson is somewhat of an oddity. A great guitarist, a talented singer and, most importantly, a first-rate song-writer, he is often overlooked and overshadows by his peers. A self-confessed perfectionist, Johnson can spent months (sometimes even years) working on a project. His technically brilliance on guitar is equal (if not beyond) that of the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen; however, whilst these three made their career in the eighties for "shredding" (for anyone who doesn't know, "shredding" is a style of guitar playing where the basic aim is to play as many notes as quickly as possible), Johnson reserved his abilities and instead crafted songs that are both powerful and thought-provoking.
"Venus Isle" is Johnson's forth solo album and was released in 1996. I personally wouldn't class this solely...
