The British Face [DVD]

Portraits are one of the great subjects of British art, and from school photos to passports portraits are also central to all our lives. In two films for Five, Fiona Shaw goes on a journey to explore pictures of people in history and today, starting with her own startling portrait at the National Portrait Gallery. She meets artists including the controversial painter Stuart Pearson Wright, Victoria Russell, who painted Fiona in 2002, and caricaturist Gerald Scarfe, together with a host of sitters and subjects. Why did monarchs like Richard II and Elizabeth I have their portraits made? Why, in an age drenched in digital photos, do artists continue to create portraits? And can works like Marc Quinn's portrait of eminent geneticist Sir John Sulston, created using a strand of the sitter's DNA, re-invent portraits for the twenty-first century? Fiona Shaw looks at celebrity portraits made two hundred years ago by Sir Joshua Reynolds and today by fashion photographer Rankin, at tomb effigies and death-masks, at the searching paintings of Francis Bacon, and at Tudor miniatures and the pictures that we carry around on their mobiles. The British Face is produced in association with London's National Portrait Gallery and Five. The DVD includes exclusively twenty short films, each of which considers a single work from the collection. ... less

This is just the kind of series you look to the BBC to produce, but in this case, its Sky Atlantic thats brought it to life. And one thing you cant fault The British for is its sheer scope and ambition. Its job? To tell the story of the British Isles history, spanning back some 2000 years. To do this, it brings in a mixture of tricks, from utilising computer generated effects and drama, to informative, interesting voiceover. It moves at breathtaking speed at times, which is perhaps understandable given how much theyre trying to cram into seven episodes. Its hard to complain about just how much you get for your money, here, even if keeping up can be the occasional challenge. The programme covers many key events in British history. With plenty of input from familiar faces, it takes the era of the Roman invasion, and brings things as up to date as it can. The journey of The British takes in whats built Great Britain up, and the people, royal and otherwise, who have helped forge its position in the world. And its keen to do this in as engaging a way as possible. It succeeds in its goal. There are, clearly, far more in-depth ways to familiarise yourself with the history of Britain. But The Britishs whistle-stop tour approach bundles together a lot of information in a thoroughly entertaining package. Warmly recommended, especially as a primer for finding out more. --Jon Foster ... less

Mick Temple's new book offers an introduction to the history, theory, politics and potential future of British newspapers. The focus of this new book is on the relationship between press and political history, examining the social and political impact of British newspapers. Throughout, the author assesses the press' contribution to enlarging and informing the public sphere. "The British Press" is both a practical introduction to the subject and a theoretically informed critique of press developments. The first half of the book leads the reader through key historical moments from the Civil War to Wapping and beyond, while the second half takes an in-depth look at current empirical and theoretical concerns.Scholarly yet accessible, the book is also not afraid to take a position on today's contentious issues. For example, Mick Temple mounts a defence of 'dumbing down', arguing that the much criticised 'tabloidisation' of newspapers has been an essential development in enabling access to the public sphere for those whose news agenda differs from the traditional template of 'serious' news. The book takes a more positive perspective on the British press than has often been the case, arguing that throughout their history our newspapers have been vital conduits for public opinion and, on occasion, catalysts for social change. Temple is also positive about the future of newspapers, pointing out the online strength of great brand names like the "Telegraph", "Guardian", "Sun" and "Mail". ... less

The British Constitution - Anthony King

In the latter part of the nineteenth century Walter Bagehot wrote a classic account of the British constitution as it had developed during Queen Victoria's reign. He argued that the late Victorian constitution was not at all what people thought it was. Anthony King argues that the same is true at the beginning of this century. Most people are aware that major constitutional changes have taken place, but few recognize that their cumulative effect has been to change entirely the nature of Britain's constitutional structure. The old constitution has gone. The author insists that the new constitution is a mess, but one that we can make the best of. The British Constitution is neither a reference book nor a textbook. Like Bagehot's classic, it is written with wit and mordant humour-by someone who is a journalist and political commentator as well as a distinguished academic. The author maintains that, while the new British constitution is a mess, there is no going back now. 'As always', he says, 'nostalgia is a good companion but a bad guide.' Far from shying away from the thorniest issues facing the British polity today, the author grapples with them head on. He offers a trenchant analysis of the increasingly divergent relationship between England, Scotland and Wales in the light of devolution and a devastating critique of an all-elected House of Lords, whose benches, the author fears, risk being adorned by 'a miscellaneous assemblage of party hacks, political careerists, clapped-out retired or defeated MPs, has-beens, never-were's and never-could-possibly-be's'. The book is a Bagehot for the twenty-first century - the product of a lifetime's reflection on British politics and essential reading for anyone interested in how the British system has changed and how it is likely to change in future. ... less
