Dimplex Burlington, to take away the 'BRRRRS'
Review of Dimplex Burlington BLN 12 by
pirate33
Advantages: Looks stunning
Disadvantages: Flames are quite small
...When i decided i wanted a fireplace, without the hassel of making a hole in my chimney wall, or get the chimney swept, i knew i had found the perfect fireplace in this here Dimplex Burlington. Here are my advantages and disadvantegs of it:
Advantages:
**** Fitting **** Easy. It fits flat against any wall, so you dont need a chimney breast or a hole, just a plug socket (and the ability to cut away the coving where you want it lay flush against the wall). The shape of the base is slightly raised off the floor at the back, allowing the plug wire to fit underneath without it getting squashed and eventually worn out, which is great. It comes supplied with wall plugs and screws, so once you have decided the place, it just takes a drill and a screwdriver to secure it tightly.
**** Set Up **** Very easy to use. The controls are all well...

A weekend at Fawlty Towers
Review of The Hotel Burlington, Torquay by
rachpoppy
Advantages: Close to amenities
Disadvantages: Bad customer service, 24hr reception, next to busy road
...On May 17th my husband and I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary and as a gift from my Mother & Father-in-law we were 'treated' to a weekend away at The Hotel Burlington, Torquay.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
When we arrived our first impressions of the hotel were that it seemed ok but were almost certain that the room we were given was not the room my Mother-in-law had booked. Our room was on the second floor overlooking the rather busy road. The room was quite dated, but clean. There was a tea tray with tea and coffee but I have to say that after the long journey I would have killed for a biscuit of which there were none! Later that evening we discovered after speaking to my Mother-in-law that we had been put in the wrong room and she said that the assistant manageress would speak to us about it.
NOISY GUESTS
On our first morning...

Great place for a relaxing break
Review of General: Vermont by
cwestern
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, good food, good drink, nice people
Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...a plant leaf could achieve. And being a relativly unspoilt area, this carpet of colour stretches on for as far as one can see. Really beautiful and easy to see why so many people make a point of travelling to the area to see it.
Being late in the season, and before the ski season kicked in, we were lucky in avoiding the crowds which apparently flood the state and make getting around pretty painful, according to some of the locals. There was an autumn storm halfway through our first week with strong winds coming down from Canada, and overnight the colours had gone, blown into the gutters.
So what to do. We had a few trips in mind, intending to visit Niagara falls, Toronto and Montreal.
Montreal is a decent distance over the border, being reachable in about two hours from Burlington. It is a lovely city, French speaking and very French...

Staff throughout the store are very polite, efficient and helpful.
As for prices: this place positively oozes “Quality” {note use of capital ‘Q’!} – so expect to pay well over the normal cost of goods purchased at, say, Allders or Debenhams for F&M ‘own brand’ items.
For example, an F&M lady’s lace-trimmed handkerchief set (3 per pack) will cost around £15. A handbag on the other hand could be priced...

Green with Envy
Review of General: Vermont by
ciaotoday
Advantages: Peaceful, friendly, picturesque
Disadvantages: Need a car to get the best out of it
...Trail - made famous by Bill Bryson ins "A Walk in the Woods" - this is one of America's great walking trails - take a few steps and imagine the hardship and rewards of a through-hiker when he or she completes the thousands of miles.
Ben and Jerry's - a legend in their own lifetimes and perhaps Vermont's most famous output - yummy ice-cream -take the tour for a$2 I think and get free calories at the end. Their story is both insightful and a little inspiring. Did you know every carton is made from recycled paper?
Burlington - a pleasant town on lake - with watersports and cruises, some nighttime atmosphere, pleasant shopping & eating outdoors in summer.
Woodstock - as reviewed by another in this category
Killington for the skiers - ski & apres-ski galore?
Stowe - didn't get here but others tell me it is great set up...

Would I stay again? Don't be silly!
Review of Le Meridien Piccadilly, London by
andymcf
Advantages: Unbeatable location
Disadvantages: Miniscule rooms, lack of attention to detail, poor customer service.
...and into the smart lobby. This was very elegant, with a concierge desk, semi-open-plan reception desks, business centre and steps leading down to the welcoming Burlington Bar. Above us, on a mezzanine, was another bar area. Together with its absolutely superb – arguably unbeatable - location in the heart of London’s theatre-land, the calm, sophisticated ambience made us feel sure that we were in for a real treat.
We were greeted at reception by Tristan, who checked us in with a smile and, once the somewhat laborious process was complete, handed over the key cards to room 705 - adding that he’d managed to upgrade us to one of their nicer rooms. Excellent! Couldn’t be better!
Actually – it couldn’t be much worse. We opened the door to this large, well-furnished room and liked it very much – except for the overflowing ashtrays and the unmade bed...

Do NOT feed this to your prized tropical fish
Review of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food by
T21AMY
Advantages: Absolutely divine
Disadvantages: Expensive, moreish
...are Ben & Jerry ??
Bennett Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were both born in Brooklyn, New York in 1951. They met in 7th grade gym class at school in Merrick, Long Island in 1963. With a $12,000 investment ($4,000 of it borrowed), Ben and Jerry open their Ben & Jerry’s Homemade ice cream scoop shop in a renovated gas station at the corner of St. Paul and College Streets in downtown Burlington, Vermont, on May 5, 1978.
In 1983, the first Ben & Jerry’s out-of-state franchise was opened in Portland, Maine.
1997 saw the introduction of the product I am now reviewing - Phish Food.
As well as 'normal' ice-cream, Ben & Jerry also stock organic ice-cream, frozen yoghurt and low fat frozen yoghurt - so something to suit all tastes.
-> So what's the deal with an ice-cream called 'Phish Food' ?
Ben and Jerry have a history of naming...

A jewel in the English crown..... Chatsworth House
Review of Chatsworth House by
Writing321
Advantages: History so well preserved, grand, homely
Disadvantages: None at all
...by the huge marble feature in the high ceiling room, stunning. Also, near here I talked to the guide about the wooden room and he advised that one of the Dukes had seen an entire room of wood in Italy (I think) , bought it and had it shipped to Chatsworth and used in a delightful feature room which is still there for all to appreciate.
All through the house you marvel at famous works of art which were mostly collected by the second and sixth dukes as well as the third Earl of Burlington. In the 18th century the second Duke was an expert who history says had an ``infinite love of the arts and a deep knowledge''. It's thanks to him you can now see a valued collection of Old Master drawings and fine paintings. The 3rd Earl of Burlington added furniture of William Kent for Chiswick, Inigo Jones designs and along came the Bachelor Duke...

Comfortable and quiet in Preston
Review of Preston Marriott Hotel, Preston by
mashpuma
Advantages: Easy access, Marriott standards and deals, very comfortable
Disadvantages: Some delays in restaurant
....
We noticed that bar meals were available in the lounge and they looked reasonably priced, with a varied menu. There are also restaurants within walking distance - Burlingtons is about 8 minutes heading north.
Although we did not use the facilities, the gym and pool etc looked large and well designed.
Overall then, this was a really enjoyable stay in a very comfortable hotel, with just the delay in the restaurant on 1 night as the negative.
It was made even better by the Marriott deal - use code OTP on the Marriott website....

BJs Well I Never
Review of Ben & Jerry's Dairy Ice Cream, Full Vermonty by
Zoe30
Advantages: So many flavours such little tubs
Disadvantages: Wanting more
.... The price for the 500ml is a little bit on the steep side at £3.27, but most major supermarket chains start to run offers like buy 2 for a fiver, which is when I start to get a little carried away.
~ A little Ben & Jerry's History~
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc, was started in 1978 in Burlington, Vermont USA, by two friends and dedicated hippies Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. They started their ice cream careers with a $5 ice cream making correspondance course from the Penn State University and $12,000 investment ($4,000 which was borrowed). In the short time that Ben & Jerry have been around the company now has more than a million dollar turn over each year.
Now for the painful bit, if you are squemish or on a diet go straight to the next paragraph!
