The title of The Castle refers to a ramshackle suburban tract house so close to an airport that planes fly mere yards above the roof. Worse than that, it's built on a toxic landfill and right beside humming high-power lines. But to patriarch Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) and his dim-witted but cheerful brood, it's home. Darryl has devoted himself to constantly improving it with modifications such as a false chimney that, as he brags to a man sent to estimate the value of the property, makes the house look more picturesque. When the owners of the airport serve Darryl notice that his home is being compulsorily purchased, Darryl hires a small-time lawyer and pursues his case all the way to the Australian Supreme Court. This Australian box-office smash has something of the same buoyant spirit as The Full Monty. Its relationship with its characters resembles the farcical intimacy of classic sitcoms such as Fawlty Towers, in which crazed behaviour is balanced by the genuine warmth of the whole cast. Caton in particular is a sweet, engaging presence; Darryl Kerrigan is a fool, but a fool with dignity, and he carries you through the movie. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com ... less

Based on Dodie Smith's much-loved novel, I Capture the Castle turns out to be an equally lovely film, delightful and surprisingly wise. When her family moves into a glamorous castle in the countryside, Cassandra (Ramola Garai) imagines great things will happen. But the decaying castle loses its appeal as her novelist father (Bill Nighy) develops writer's block and her mother dies of cancer. From this sad beginning, I Capture the Castle becomes an utterly engaging coming-of-age story as 17-year-old Cassandra and her older sister Rose (Rose Byrne) struggle to win the attentions of their new American landlord (Henry Thomas)--but when everything goes the way Cassandra wishes, her hopes fall apart. Garai's wonderful performance carries the audience through bittersweet discoveries about life and adulthood with hope and yearning. The entire cast--also featuring Tara Fitzgerald and Marc Blucas--is superb. --Bret Fetzer ... less

The Castle Of Cagliostro [DVD]
The delightful 1979 adventure yarn The Castle of Cagliostro was the first international hit for Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro)....... more
The delightful 1979 adventure yarn The Castle of Cagliostro was the first international hit for Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro). Quick-paced, high-spirited and loaded with wit, Cagliostro is a dandy throwback to the caper pictures of the 1960s. International man of mystery Lupin III stumbles back into the picturesque European duchy of Cagliostro with his faithful and gruff sidekick, Jigen. They will encounter, in no particular order, a runaway bride, a magical ring, an evil count with a dastardly plan, an inspector bent on catching Lupin, perilous rooftop chases, hooded guards with superhuman powers, a well-used dungeon, a counterfeiting scheme, and an ancient mystery promising grand treasure. Lupin deploys an array of Bond-type gadgets, razor-sharp wit, and a surprise up both his sleeves. Despite the hail of bullets, this caper is great fun, never taking itself seriously. Miyazaki's career illustrates how limiting the term animé can be for these films; there are hardly more than 10 live-action films of this genre as entertaining. Far less mean than Hollywood fare, it nevertheless is for ages nine and up since it contains adult-orientated language and gunplay. The Lupin character has been featured in other animé films, but never as successfully or with as much fun as in Miyazaki's. The new English-language dubbing is excellent to boot. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com ... less

Beware of low flying castle!
Advantages: A delightful entertaining fantasy
Disadvantages: Nothing major.
...Castle in the sky is a fantasy tale from Hayao Miyazaki's studio Ghibli. It can be labelled as science fiction as it?s definitely a work of fiction and the science is mostly real. Our two lead characters are a boy and girl called Pazu and Sheeta. Both are now orphans.
We first meet Sheeta when she is aboard a civilian flying ship that is about to be attacked by aerial pirates, The Dola clan...

It's Accompany & Observe Castle, NOT Participate & Annoy!
Advantages: great actors, great story line, unrequited love, different from your usual police procedural
Disadvantages: DVD only available in the USA (and France) but not the UK, lack of DVD extras
...!
However, this DVD set lacks some very essential extras (well I find them essential), the producer/director/actor commentary. I don't always listen to the commentary but in the case of Castle I would love to know what was going on behind the scenes or what was meant when the episode was filmed.
The Castle DVD extras are nice but nothing to write home about so there's no real reason to actually watch...

Howl's Moving Castle
Advantages: Beautifully imagined and humane animation that respects its audience, whilst being accessible to all.
Disadvantages: Occasionally the plot is a little disjointed, but it never really retracts...
...After the originality of Spirited Away it was easy to feel immediate disappointment at Howl's Moving Castle. Immediate disappointment, I must admit, that is wholly unjustified. Sat in a Haymarket cinema, images unfolding before me, I enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle but was not as delighted as I had been by Spirited Away and years before by his earlier efforts Princess Mononoke or Porco Rosso...
