Advantages: Years (hopefully) of love, companionship and fun!
Disadvantages: Costly to keep, a big resposibility
...Dogs make fantastic pets, and providing you give them everything they need, they will become loyal, loving members of the family for years to come. Keeping dogs is not always easy at times, and it is very costly, but that said, the enjoyment you will get out of owning one far outweighs the cons!
-Exercise-
Every dog, regardless of the breed or size, needs exercise. Obviously the amount of exercise needed does vary depending on age, health and breed. My two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a West Highland Terrier get 2hrs+ of off-lead exercise a day, this is a lot and most dogs do not need that much however I like to make use of the wonderful countryside in which I live and my dogs enjoy it. Whilst out walking you are responsible for your dog and must have it under control at all times and only let it off the lead if you are confident he...

Advantages: Perhaps more loving than cats
Disadvantages: More costly and harder to keep than most realise
...Before anyone starts shouting 'He wrote an article on How to Keep cats' , how can he also write an opinion on keeping dogs? Well to explain, I have four cats and a dog! I would write an opinion on 'How to Keep Fish' but all my fish died so I don't consider myself qualified for that category.

Whereas cats are fairly independent and can generally get by on their own with only a little food and water, I find that dogs require far more attention, love and affection. However, before even worrying about how to look after a dog you should consider many things first.
