Johnny English

Advantages: great entertainment and side splitting comedy
Disadvantages: none

...Director: Peter Howitt Producer: Tim Bevan, Mark Huffam and Eric Fellner. Writers: Neal Purvis, William Davies and Robert Wade. Stars: Rowan Atkinson, Ben Miller, John Malkovich and Natalie Imbruglia This cracking comedy was released in the summer of 2003, the main character, Johnny English, basing himself self on a character originally created for a well known credit card company adverts. Johnny English, (played by Rowan Atkinson both on the adverts and this movie) is a British secret service member, spoofing the likes of James Bond. Unfortunately, he is as competent as Inspector Jacques Clouseau (from the Pink Panther films) which does lead him into some tricky situations. His partner, Bough, pronounced 'Boff', (played by Ben Miller) is the silent hero of the movie, always allowing Johnny to take full credit...

English, Johnny English

Advantages: It was very funny
Disadvantages: Story, acting, plot etc

...Although I probably ought to have been revising, one of our tutors told us to take at least a whole day off a week. So a couple of weeks ago, I put impending Finals out of my mind, and spent a constructive Saturday (writing music reviews, playing pool, punting, watching a mate's band play Exeter's 'party in the park', Pizza Hut, cinema, George & Davies ice cream and a friends for relatively late night G&T and chat). So that's where Johnny English fits in to my revision schedule... The choice was X Men 2, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and Johnny English, and you'll know by now which we chose... I knew it was a Bond-esque spy spoof starring Rowan Atkinson, but that was about it. My biggest concern was whether I'd be able to put Mr Bean out of my head - as it happened, not much problem, but I kept thinking of that guy from the Barclaycard...

The English Blue

Advantages: Beautiful to look at, good temperament usually.
Disadvantages: Bad experience with my auntie's cat

...My aunty had an English Blue cat. It was really beautiful to look at, but had a really nasty temperament. Whenever I would go to stroke this cute cat it would hiss and go to bite me. So I left it well alone. It would just sit there in a ball by itself. Oh it was lovely to my aunty, but that's the only person he was lovely to. If anyone else tried to get near him he would hiss at them. Many people show British Blues and have marvellous success. British Blues are very beautiful cats to look at. They have been described as a stocky cat with a woolly ash-grey coat and copper eyes. A full broad chest, short strong legs, rounded paws and a tail that is thick at the base and tapers slightly to a rounded tip to show off a "football player" physique. They certainly are very handsome cats to look at. I have heard people describe...

The Names English...Johnny English

Advantages: Moderately funny. Natalie Imbruglia.
Disadvantages: Rowan Atkinson (you either love or hate him)

...~ ~ Movies have often been known to inspire commercials based on them, but it’s not too often that the opposite is the case. “Johnny English” (2003), the latest James Bond spy spoof currently doing the rounds of the cinemas, is the exception. From 1992 to 1997 Barclay’s Bank ran a series of humorous commercials starring Rowan Atkinson as an accident-prone spy, and it was the success of these commercials that ultimately led to Atkinson being offered the starring role in this new movie. ~ ~ Make no mistake, it’s Atkinson that you’ll see the most of in “Johnny English”. Not only does he take the lead role, but he appears on the cinema screen for about 95% of the time. In other words, this movie is a thinly disguised vehicle to show off the many talents of Rowan Atkinson, with the other...

Would Anyone Like Some English Tea With A Slice of American Pie ?

Advantages: Delightfully uplifting tea that can be enjoyed at anytime of the day (not just at breakfast time)
Disadvantages: If you are on a budget then Twinings Teas are a little costly ...

...try" ... When I returned to the computer an hour or so ago I completely scrapped my half written review and started again. I found the full lyrics to the song and decided to set myself the challenge of re-writing the entire song to include all the details about Twinings Breakfast Tea Bags that I had originally wanted to write about. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please feel free to sing along too ... it's a little more complex than "Polly Put The Kettle On" but am sure you all know the tune. Twinings English Breakfast Tea Bags (sung to the tune of American Pie) A long, long time ago ? I can still remember How that morning cuppa used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my choice That I could use my reviewer?s voice And, maybe, they?d be happy for a while. But October made...

English National Opera - A National Treasure

Advantages: Accessible staging, good balance in programming, great education programmes
Disadvantages: Singing is not always consistently amazing

...As an aspiring opera singer (currently working in admin - oh, the glamour! - but hoping to go back to college in the near future), I try to attend as much live opera as I can. Living in London is great for this - we are spoilt with 2 international level opera houses, as well as numerous touring companies and high standard amateur productions. English National Opera is generally seen as the Royal Opera House's more accessible sibling - slightly cooler, slightly more modern. All productions are staged in English and the singing is generally of a very high standard. English National Opera's home is the Coliseum on St Martin's Lane, just off Trafalgar Square, so easily accessible from Charing Cross Station (Mainline or underground) or bus routes 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 23, 24, 29, 53, 77a, 88, 91, 139, 159, 176, or if you're travelling by...

The English Agent

Advantages: Classic British humour
Disadvantages: Classic British xenophobia

...that joke was done in Dr Goldfoot And His Bikini Machine (1965)!" However all reservations had disappeared by the end of the credit sequence, a brilliant fantasy which takes off every break-and-enter on the big screen, leaving me to enjoy the film from the position of a sniggering wreck rather than a sneering critic. Rowan Atkinson is Johnny English, pen-pusher and field agent manqué for MI7. Thanks to a piece of particularly gross incompetence, no prizes for guessing by whom, he is the only spy left standing when the Crown Jewels are stolen from under the very nose of British Intelligence and it's up to him to save the dignity of his employer and his country. From the start, English suspects rich French philanthropist Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovitch), but nobody believes him. Well, would you? Every time he attempts to unmask...

Old English sheepdog

Advantages: Very playful
Disadvantages: Very high maintenance

...My dad has always kept dogs. At the moment he has two: Charlie, a Chocolate Labrador and Roger, an Old English Sheepdog, before them there was Jasper, a King Charles Spaniel, Magic a Border Collie and Cassie a German Shepherd. I had always had an Image of the Old English sheepdog as the Dulux dog, but although they are similar in looks they're nowhere near as cute... in my opinion anyway. Having said that I wouldn't be without him and although I wouldn't keep one myself he is loveable and he is cute. If I hadn't had the image of them that I did then maybe I would have taken to him quicker. Anyway? on with the review ~*~ History ~*~ The origins of the old English sheepdog are still questionable, however there is evidence that they originated in the early 19th Century in South England. At that time the dogs were mainly used...

English at Leicester Univeristy (1st year)

Advantages: friendly and helpful department, interesting and well taught modules
Disadvantages: more choice in modules perhaps, but otherwise great

...Ok...so I have just finished my first year as an English undergraduate at the University of Leicester, and I can tell you I have had the time of my life. I feel one hundred percent settled in my chosen area of study owing to the excellent support and enthusiasm from staff in the department, after initially feeling a bit out of my depth. I know it sounds silly as I chose to do an English degree, however one of the major shocks when I started was the amount of reading expected of me. In my first semester. It was certainly much more than for my combined lang/lit A Level. But you do learn ways to get over this. I only did two modules English in each semester and every student enrolled on the course has to do a supplementary subject, of which there is a huge variety to choose from, from modern languages to American Literature to...

UCL English

Advantages: globally respected uni, friendly atmosphere, intellectually challenging and rewarding course
Disadvantages: london can be an expensive place to live

...The English Language and Literature course at UCL is highly competitive in terms of getting a place, not many people are selected for interviews and those that are will be interviewed by two professors and be required to write a piece of practical criticism. However, if you are passionate and involved in literature you stand a good chance at impressing at the interview. The staff seem to be looking for a genuine enthusiasm, as well as wide reading and a literary mindset. And it is well worth it if you do get an offer! Having studied at UCL I am very pleased it was my first choice, I wouldn't want to have spent my university years anywhere else. It has been a fun yet hard-working few years. Overall, UCL has a great reputation, world class lecturers, beautiful buildings and a central London location. The English department more...
