...This is my personal experience with the generation gaps in my life. I do not feel that this opinion reflects everyone’s lifestyles. WHAT ARE THE GENERATION GAPS? My mum is nearly 60, My dad’s sister is 45, I am 21 and the kids who throw rocks at my windows are 16. In my opinion these are the 4 generations, and the gap between them is regarding respect and social morals. My mum’s generation grew up having what they needed and wanted little more, this means that they respect what they have now, because they have earned it. This generation has a firm grounding in social morals; you do not swear, you do not drink excessively, take drugs or have sex before marriage. In my opinion, quite a dull way to go through life! ...Hmm.. not quite sure why I chose to comment on this particular topic. Could it possibly be because I know my birthday is lurking just around the corner. Of course it begins stalking me every year at about this time.. and has for the last 52 years. Wonder if I could get a restraining order..? But really.. as long as they keep coming in chronological order (and I don't find that 59 has suddenly cut in front of 54).. well I think I can handle it! Which brings me to my topic de jour: Is There A Generation Gap. Contrary to my opening remarks I find it detrimental.. all the decollating collating pigeon-holing and segregating that labeling tends to encourage. Why do people see Christmas so differently now? When it comes to Christmas is there a generation gap? No, I don't think so. I think it all comes back to this commercial issue. The advertisements and the media are a constant reminder to us of the cost of Christmas. I think in the times before advertising became so prominent, people still 'kept up with the Jone's' so to speak. It was customary to buy as much as you could afford at Christmas, but I think in most cases this was because it felt good to make Christmas special for the kids.
