The George Hotel

Advantages: Good food, pleasant staff and good prices
Disadvantages: the ghostly feeling

...Whilst visiting friends in Lydd in Kent, we stayed at "The George hotel" a large hotel built in a very small town. When we went to the hotel, you can feel the characteristics and you can see some original features, we paid before we took our luggage up and the prices to stay for a double room is £45.00, a single room is £25.00, win is £45.00 and a room for a family of 3/4 is £55/£60. You can also have the choice to have breakfast there which was from £3.50 - £6.95 and of course you can't stay at a hotel without having there fry up!! The staff showed us our way up to our room, the place felt very strange and weird. As you walk along the narrow hallway on the top floor it was creaky and dim, you can even see that the flooring was slanted, it looked very spooky to me. We had a double bedroom with a TV and DVD player, tea and coffee...

Review of George Hotel, Lydd

Cracking night's sleep, by George!

Advantages: Comfortable, historic hotel
Disadvantages: Bar shuts too early!

...Thanks to the ticket touts (aka parasitic scum), I couldn't get tickets to any of the Manic Street Preachers' London gigs on their recent tour. As the Manics are a band that seem to be constantly on the verge of retirement, you don't like to miss an opportunity to see them live, so I booked the Reading concert. Over the years, I've decided my least favourite aspect of going to concerts is travelling home afterwards - ever since my sister threw up in the car somewhere in Somerset on the way back from the Newport leg of Radioheard's Big Tent Tour. So I decided to book a hotel, and I decided I wanted a NICE hotel. The George Hotel is apparently the oldest building in Reading. It's incredibly easy to find, right at the heart of the town centre, and about a ten minute walk from the train station. From the outside, it looks like some...

By George, it's good!

Advantages: Reasonably priced, good location, good range of facilities, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Decor is tired and old; bathroom could have been cleaner

...I have just stayed here for one night, on business. LOCATION The hotel is very easy to find, being on the A61 through Harrogate (the Ripon Road). It is centrally located so you can walk into the touristy bits of Harrogate from here if you want. It is right next to the International Convention Centre, which is where I imagine it gets a lot of business - that's why I went there. Its central location is a good point. It is a beautiful Edwardian manor house, in nice grounds. FACILITIES It has the usual dining room, bar etc, and a leisure suite too. It has a quite a small swimming pool and a gym and weights room, plus a sauna. This is all useful stuff, if you were staying a bit longer than one night, but I didn't try and of it so sorry I can't comment. It did all look clean and there were obviously plenty of towels etc...

Review of Swallow Saint George Hotel, Harrogate

Pleasant stay at the St George

Advantages: Comfortable, attractive hotel with good range of facilities
Disadvantages: Location not the best, can be chaotic in the dining room

...and gym free but spa services at extra cost, as you would expect. Small shop and hairdressers also available. Range of sitting areas around the pool, plus grassy areas and rocky areas adjacent to the sea. Animation team worked hard to encourage participation in events but were very friendly and not pushy. Nightly entertainment of the usual variable standard, but also an enjoyable quiz. Balance of guests during out stay were mainly British, but also German, French and Russian guests were staying. Dining experience was the main downside. Breakfast was generally OK but disapointed that no omlettes etc could be made to order as is usual in this class of hotel. Only "omlettes" available had been baked in the oven in trays and were some 50mm thick - more like egg custard. We did not have lunch in the hotel, but took the evening meals as we were...

George's Marvellous Medicine

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...?George?s Marvellous Medicine? was the first of Roald Dahl?s stories which we read to our eldest son. It?s the story of a little boy who has a real stinker of a grandmother. She?s rude and scary and bosses him around all the time. One day George?s mum and dad have both gone out, leaving him alone with his Grandma. George has had enough of Grandma bullying him and so decides to cure her of her cantankerous behaviour with a special potion, which he?ll give her instead of her usual medicine. He finds an enormous saucepan in the kitchen and lugs it all around the house, essentially putting in a bit of everything he finds [lipsticks and canary seed included!]. He even makes sure he adds some brown paint so that it is the same colour as Grandma?s real medicine! He then boils it up to make sure that everything?s nicely mixed together before...

Review of George's Marvellous Medicine - Roald Dahl

George and the dragon

Advantages: Great re take on a well known tale
Disadvantages: None

...George and the Dragon An amusing spin off from the story of George and the Dragon as we know it?ie knight with sword killing a dragon. This book, however does indeed have a scary dragon, but the hero, far from being a knight in shining armour, is a mouse called George. ~~Story and Illustrations~~ The scene is set as we enter a landscape of high and rocky mountains and move into a "deep, deep valley in a dark dark cave"" (ooh!! The suspense). In this dark cave, lives a mighty dragon. Yes, he is big and very red. So big, in fact, that he takes up a whole double page spread, and there he stands amongst the rubble, blowing smoke from his nostrils. This mighty dragon can fly higher than the clouds and faster than the birds. He can burn down forests and smash castle walls and with a brush of his wing, he can foil and destroy whole...

Large George Foreman grill and griddle for healthier food

Advantages: quick, healthy food
Disadvantages: weak instruction guide

...I bought this George Foreman 6 person indoor grill about two months ago. I would rather say it is for 4 persons. It is quite big when you have to bring it home or you have to find place for it, but is perfect size when you grill on it. First impressions I saw it on Internet on www.argos.co.uk site, it was on offer for 44.99 pounds. I reserved it and went to pick it up. It was in a huge box. When I arrived home with it I opened and found that the grill is really big. I had to put some household appliances away to have enough place for it. There were the grill, a drip tray and two spatulas in the box. The grill was in one piece there was no need for assemble anything. Features Non stick grill and griddle: the vegetables need a little oil because otherwise they stick to the griddle. So before I spice them, I pour a little oil on them...

Diamond review  You, Me & George

Advantages: Build Quality, Price, Discount & Service
Disadvantages: Poor Base Specification - Options Could be Better

...The concept of reviewing things is a sound one, tell people your thoughts (good or bad) about products or services you use or buy - anything from a tea bag to a hotel room. Well, this time I'm returning to Ciao to write a review of our most expensive ever purchase. I'm talking brick and motor. I'm talking a quarter of a million pound's worth of brand-spanking-new George Wimpy real-estate. Be warned, there's so much to tell you this is a really long review - but there's a gold star in it for anyone who makes it to the end! WHERE IT ALL STARTED The post Christmas blues seemed to appear this year about the 1st December (26 days earlier than normal!) and I just wasn't happy. I needed something new to focus on, my feet were getting itchy and the guttering needed replacing. So the logical thing to do is move house! To be...

Review of George Wimpey Homes

We've fallen in love with the George

Advantages: Family-run, hotel offering a very warm welcome
Disadvantages: 11 miles from York city centre

...The experience of staying at this hotel is one you want to repeat again and again. We have just visited for the third time. Kay and Michael, the hotel owners, are lovely people, and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. They took a great deal of interest in our holiday - the places we were intending to visit, how we were getting there, and the attractions we might see. They provided details of York's park and ride, bus routes and timetables, and maps of the area. All the staff at the George are friendly; the lady who served breakfast even took the trouble to remember our usual order. We have stayed in the main hotel on two occasions and once in the annex to the hotel. On all three visits, the rooms have been of a high standard, well kept, clean, warm and surprisingly spacious. The beds always offer a very good night...

George's Medicine Making Morning

Advantages: Fun for small children
Disadvantages: Lacked a certain sparkle that other Dahl books have

...An extract for George?s Marvellous Medicine was in a Roald Dahl Anthology that I was privileged to own when I was younger and was one of the things within it that I really liked reading. Because of this I was quite pleased when I discovered that my brother had the book in his Roald Dahl box set. The book is like most of Roald Dahl?s offerings rather simple and easy to read. The story is rather vibrant and entertaining and the covers of the book can merely contain the colourful characters bursting to get out. The book itself was first published in 1981 and is not too long a read, coming in at 104 pages long in my copy, which is a Puffin edition, published in 2001. Despite saying that this book is 104 pages in length, not all of these pages contain writing and some contain only a minimal amount, as the story is accompanied by some...
