Advantages: Elvis Presley singing some wonderful music Disadvantages: The tracks have been released and re-released many times over the years
...People often recall Elvis Presley as the early rock 'n' roller in the mid-1950s, or the less rocking star of some (sometimes) decidedly dodgy movies from the 1960s, or as the Las Vegas singer of the 1970s. One style of music which straddles all of these time periods though is gospel.
Elvis was always a great lover of gospel music, and often spent hours singing this type of music with his backing singers in his own private time.
Elvis' record company, BMG, have spent the last 29 years (since his death) repackaging his recorded material, and still release many CDs each year, collecting together already released material and unreleased material from the archives (this unreleased music is often distributed through their specialist Elvis label FTD - short for 'Follow That Dream' which was the title of one of Elvis' movies from the 1960s...
Advantages: good mix of music Disadvantages: absolutely none!
..., Jesus is a friend of Mine, Jesus Jesus Jesus, Jesus Loves Me, Singing you a Prayer, What would Jesus Do?, Going Home, Were you there?, I shall be released.
Happy, sultry, or meditative it's all here in the 2 CD collection of 'Gospel Roots,' on an EMI label. The cover design is simple, with Aaron Neville in a relaxed pose on a bridge, and to the rear is the artiste again, but this time looking more upbeat and rugged. The cover portrays Aaron like his music: sultry and uptempo!
At £14.99, which is what I bought it for, the value for money outweighs the price. A big guy with an angelic voice, Aaron's renditions will de-stress you, return some peace into your life; and anyone wanting to find some solace or just pure easy listening at it's very best, it's got to be this collection!...
Advantages: A cracking good yarn Disadvantages: It's full of holes and poorly researched
...own evil purposes.
In Angels and Demons we had the Catholic Church under attack from an ancient secret organisation calling itself the ?Illuminati?. In the Da Vinci Code Brown goes a step further, in effect claiming that Christianity, and in particular Catholicism, is based on the biggest conspiracy the world has ever seen.
He claims that not only was Jesus Christ married to Mary Magdalene but that a child was born of the union. If this isn?t enough, he then claims that after Christ?s crucifixion, the Magdalene was in such grave danger of assassination by Christ?s remaining disciples (they were all insanely jealous of her you see!) that she fled to Gaul (France) where her bloodline married into European royalty in the form of the Mergovingians. Of course, in the ?Gospel According To Brown?, the early Catholic Church suppressed all...
Advantages: recognisable situations; intriguing premise Disadvantages: not exciting
...The character at the centre of this novel (Theo Griepenkerl) is arrogant, short-sighted and unlikeable - but this is entirely deliberate. After making the stunning discovery of a fifth gospel, apparently published before any of the other gospels in the New Testament, Theo's sole concern is how to wrench money and fame from his discovery. His thoughtlessness in releasing such a controversial document upon the world is rewarded by action from certain increasingly angry and determined citizens who have various reasons to hate the message the gospel sends - that Jesus was more human than transcendental.
The writer of the gospel, Malchus, is equally unlikeable, due to his dull reflections and obsession with bodily functions. Again, this is deliberate and suits the nature of the character perfectly. If you're someone who likes to identify...
Advantages: The broadness of the music kept my interest throughout, they enjoyed being there! Disadvantages: None for me.
...As much as people like to mock my part of London, it does have some good points, and one of the diamonds in the rough is The Fairfield Halls.
An eclectic mix of ?artistes? have passed through the corridors of this Concert Hall since it opened in 1962, ranging from Robert Cray to Mott the Hoople. A quick check of their website tells me that both The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Curtis Stigers are also due to perform here in the near future. Okay, so it?s not exactly the O2 arena, or even the Brixton Academy, but it?s not bad.
It was here that I came to see The Soweto Gospel Choir recently. My friend had been more keen than I to attend, but I was interested enough to agree to go. I didn?t appreciate, until we saw the concert, that the Choir had such diverse musical scope. They mixed traditional African gospel and hymns...
Advantages: Well researched, well written, interesting topic Disadvantages: none
...In her prize-winning book 'The Gnostic Gospels', a book which has remained in the popular eye for the past two decades since its first publication in 1979, Elaine Pagels has put together a popular treatment of a hitherto (but since more popularly-accessible) academic-only subject. The discoveries of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi Library were very much a topic of conversation, but always topics about which things were spoken, rather than of which things were spoken. This book helped change that in common parlance, and also served as a basic primer for those new to the field who would then proceed to more in-depth study and analysis.
In her relatively substantial introduction, Pagels goes through a history of the coming into light of the texts of Nag Hammadi, contrasting it with the more popularly known Dead Sea Scrolls...
Advantages: It is a real and sincere film Disadvantages: Some silent moments, something in the soundtrack, and the devil
...Vangelo secondo Matteo, Il (1964)
[the more accurate translation is The Gospel According to Matthew; not Saint Matthew]
►►► "Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left." ◄◄◄
At a certain point in WAITING FOR GODOT, Vladimir ponders on the fact that only one of the Evangelists [Luke] mentions that one of the thieves was saved; whereas both Mark and John don't mention the thieves at all, and Matthew even says that both of the thieves abused Jesus. So, why do we prefer to believe Saint Luke? Why most of the adaptations are based on the gospel according to Saint Luke? Each of the four gospels has a special characteristic: Matthew aims at proving that Jesus was the promised Messiah, Mark concentrates on the miracles, Luke, who was a doctor, provides the longest...
Advantages: I can't find a word in the dictionary good enough to sum up this album Disadvantages: They only did 14 songs
...This album is superb. I didn't know quite what to expect when I bought this CD, I'm not a huge Gospel fan but what Mary Mary have done is to fuse gospel with R&B / soul and sometimes even hip hop to create an outstanding type of music to rival that of Destiny's Child. (Speaking of Destiny's Child they also appear on this album, but you do wish they could have harmonised on a more complex song).
Thankful moves effortlessly and seamlessly from track to track just carrying you along in a tide of joy and positivity. They inspire us to be thankful no matter what is going on in our lives, to carry on despite the pressure and to receive a kind of healing if we are in the pit. Even if you are not religious, buy this album, I certainly want 200% of what these two artists seem to have.
If you are happy you will sing these songs...
Advantages: Opens up a whole world of music listening Disadvantages: Suggestions can be both predictable and wildly off-target. Some data errors
...or takes on uneasy Big Brotherish overtones remains to be seen.
In the meantime I shall continue to enjoy the dozens of new acts I've discovered via Audioscrobbler. After all, where else would I ever have learned that there's a Chicago indie band arrestingly named the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir?
UPDATE: typically, within a few weeks of me writing this, Audioscrobbler disappeared. It has now been subsumed within the above-mentioned Last.fm. This is merely 'powered by audioscrobbler', although most of the features mentioned above do remain, and in a far more attractive format too.
(In the unlikely event that you want like to see what I've been listening to lately, go to http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/Bullhassocks). Oh, go on, laugh....

Advantages: Interesting development of a lesser known gospel work Disadvantages: -
...--Simon Peter said to them: Mary should leave us because women are not worthy of the life. Jesus responded: Look, I'll lead her in order to make her male so that she can become a living spirit as you males are. For each woman who makes herself male will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.--
When I've read this passage to my biblical studies and history classes in seminary, they can usually agree readily that this might not have been the best document to include in the canon of scripture, at least when thinking about it from a `preachability' standpoint, particularly if one tends toward literalist interpretations. But many of the passages in the Gospel of Thomas defy simplistic interpretation and understanding because they really are of a different world and different worldview, and have not had a long history of hermeneutic development...
