Great Scientist, Lousy Philosopher
Advantages: easy to read, compelling arguments against organised religion, informative
Disadvantages: Dawkins' philosophical argument is deeply flawed
...child abuse.
Generally he promotes a wholly laudable form of secular humanism and the championing of free thinking, making the God Delusion a very important and much-needed book. Whilst Dawkins may be an excellent scientist however, he appears to be considerably less capable as a philosopher. Dawkins tries to calculate the probability of the existence of god, failing to see that empiricism, whilst an immensely useful and flexible analytical tool, does still have its limitations. Just as empirical analysis cannot tell you whether or not what you take to be your current waking life is in fact nought but a dream, neither can it provide an answer, or even a clue, as to whether or not god exists, because these are innately unknowable questions; metaphysical questions that cannot be assessed in terms of probability. Dawkins' famous argument is...

I'm no philosopher but......
Advantages: Good fun and entertaining
Disadvantages: long and not as good as the book
...In the run up to the release of the fifth DVD in the Harry Potter series Harry Potter and The Order of the Pheonix, I have decided to review the previous four films. This is the first of the four - The 2001 Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone (or Sorceror's Stone for our US friends). Before I start I must state that I am a big kid and love Harry Potter but don't worry that doesn't mean that I will babble on inanely about how brilliant the film is despite its flaws. Like anything you really love you can forgive the flaws but you can also point them out more objectively.
The Philosopher's Stone is an adaptation of the introductory book to the highly successful J.K.Rowling stories about the boy wizard Harry Potter. Born to wizard parents, killed when he was a baby by the evil dark lord Voldemort, Harry had been brought up by...

My thoughts on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone*****
Advantages: The writing is great, the imagination is fantastic, a very talented author
Disadvantages: There are no disadvantages.
...also a witch and wizard were killed trying to protect Harry from a very evil dark wizard. The curse that was cast on Harry rebounded but left Harry with a lightening shaped scar on his forehead. You discover what became of You-know-who, the dark wizard. You will meet many great characters such as Hagrid, Dumbledore and Ron's family, the Weasley's including his very amusing and cheeky older twin brothers.
This is a must read book. You will find that there are references in this first book that will link up to certain things later on in the series like a large jigsaw, which makes the whole story so much more genious. I will maybe read (in my life) another book as good as, but I will never read another book that is better than Harry Potter.
J K Rowling is nothing but sheer brilliance, a very talented author. The book really makes...

FROM A SORCERER TO A PHILOSOPHER?
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...Some time back I became intensely curious about what the hype was about over these Harry Potter stories. All these people keep proclaiming that because of the Harry Potter stories their children are now readers. I said to myself, "The children want to read? Haven't heard of that in a long time. I loved to read as a child, and always thought of myself as an oddball among my classmates who did not."
As curiosity usually always takes over my body, a quality trait of mine?LOL. I decided to purchase the first book, Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone, from Amazon.com. 4.00 for the paperback? I say to myself, "Still a bestseller, huh?" I was bound and determined to figure out the attraction Harry Potter has over these new child readers.
Upon receiving Harry Potter And the Philosophers Stone, I immediately started reading. (With...

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing
...of wizards, Hogwarts. His uncle and aunt were determined not to let him go and therefore went to great lengths to prevent these invitations reaching Harry but this was put to a stop when a giant came to deliver the message to Harry himself.
This is where the real adventure begins when Harry is taken on a shopping spree in a town that he never knew existed, Diagon Alley, to purchase all the things that he needed for the new school and discover how “famous” he was in this new found world.
Being young and a typical schoolboy, he gets up to all the usual mischiefs, getting into trouble, creeping out of dormitories late at night, making enemies as well as all the unusual things like learning how to play a sport in mid-air, flying a broomstick and all sorts of wizardy things. Little did he realise though, coming here to learn was not...

Great Universal Is Littlewoods!!!!!
Advantages: price changes
Disadvantages: same clothes
...Despite my last order through the catalogues being a while back due to the appalling service provided by La Redoute I do still browse through them when the big heavy books lands on the doorstep. Last week that book was the Great Universal Spring Summer 08 edition allowing you until the 17th August 2008 to make your purchase. "Spread the cost with affordable payment options," screams the green circle of text on the lower left hand side of the page.
Flicking through I am amazed at how expensive catalogue clothes have actually got compared to the same items in the high-street. Never the less I systematically fold over the corners of any page which shows an item I wish to purchase, but my bank balance refuses to allow, something I do with every catalogue, just in case someone else happens to flick through it and wish to buy me something...

Arry otter and the philosophers tone
Advantages: it's got harry in it (and Hagrid)
Disadvantages: too long, no surprises, something missing.
...Yeah I know there are bits missing from the title but it's a bit like the film - there is something not quite there. Don't ask me what, I can't quite put my finger on it.
The film is good, is true to the book, directed well, acted well and with good special effects and even the score isn't too bad. However, whether it is in fact just a tad too long (2 and a half hours plus); too like the book (producing no surprises as pretty much most people have read the thing) or there is just something intangible missing that leaves is slightly falling short of target - it is not a great movie as great movies go.
Robbie Coltrane I think is the star as he puts in a pretty masterful performance I think of the half giant - Hagrid. I didn't actually think he was the best actor to play him but after this showing, he should be guaranteed the next 6...

Expect a great film - you won't be dissappointed
Advantages: A haunting black and white classic
Disadvantages: None
... INTRODUCTION
In 1964 I was taken with school to one of our local cinemas (now ALL the cinemas in the town have gone) to watch David Lean's classic film 'Great Expectation'.
It was old, it was black and white - it was WONDERFUL!!
I have seen many adaptions of the book since that day 45 years ago, but I have never seen one that compares to Lean's film or that was so true to Dickens' book.
What a pairing - Dickens and Lean!!
Dickens's rich characters and gothic Victorian atmosphere combined with the unique and masterful direction of David Lean led to a true cinema masterpiece that has weathered the years well.
Last year I found a new DVD of the 1946 film and it is that DVD that I am about to review.
