...Well my dad got back from a trip to Scotland at the beginning of the week and while we were round for out regular Fish and Chip Supper on a Friday night he showed us the Video he'd shot. During htis he mentioned the Whisky Distilleries and feeling a bit peeved that at no time had I been given a present I made a comment that he hadn't brought my partner and I a bottle of Whiskey back. A very upset dad turned to me with a look of anguish and said haven't I. It turns out he and my brother had clubbed together and treated my partner to a bottle of Dougherty's Superior Blended Scotch Whiskey and me to a bottle of Heather Cream Liquer. My Gift came in a purple box with a picture of a lady holding a bottle of Heather Cream Liquer on the front with the by-line A style all of it's own. Heather shows off

Advantages: includes video, B-sides, no mixes
Disadvantages: none

...This is a fantastic underrated single. Proud is an uplifting song with amazing lyrics and perfectly suited to Heather's voice. The chorus is unbelievable and it should have done much better than number sixteen. The B-sides are fantastic too - there were no mixes on the CD which I was pleased about. The first B-side 'Don't Give Up The Fight' is more mellow than 'Proud' but once again has fantastic lyrics and really sticks in your head. Then there is Heather's take on Louis Armstrong's 'Wonderful World', and it's just as good - the song suits her voice perfectly and is just a fantastic piece of writing. The CD also features the video, an average video and perhaps the only thing disappointing about the whole package. She looks great on the cover and the colour scheme used for the D and sleeve goes really well....

LOOK FORWARD TO A BRIGHTER WINTER!

Advantages: Low maintenance, all year interest, great choice
Disadvantages: Not too tolerant of alkaline/lime soils

...In my view, no other group of plants can offer the all year round flowering potential of the heather. Choose carefully and you can create a floral display which will give you some interest from January through to December. Add to this the the heather's excellent ground covering and weed supressing abilities and you have a plant which must be worthy of a spot in your garden. To create the best effect heathers should be planted in groups, ideally three to five plants to each group. This gives a fairly instant effect which can easily be kept under control with a little light shearing each year. Heathers will put up with difficult conditions but thrive best when given some sun, which increases the intensity of foliage and flower colour. Advantages: Year round flowering and good foliage
Disadvantages: Need acidic soil

...Heathers are much misunderstood, because so often they fail, and become regarded as "difficult" Heathers (apart from a very few) grow naturally in acid conditions (peat, to you and me). If your garden soil is not acidic, heathers will not thrive. The Ph of your soil (acid/neutral/alkaline) is easily determined with a basic Ph meter, available for a few quid from your garden centre. If your soil is alkaline, or even neutral, you will not have success with heathers in your ordinary soil. But do not despair! Create a heather bed by incorporating at least 50% peat into the soil, or better still, build a raised bed with pure peat. Heathers will love it, and so will Rhododendrons and Azaleas, and most conifers. There are heathers which flower in every season of the year, and to get the best from them, trim them back after flowering....
