The Herald - A True British Triumph

Three years later it was traded in, and a brand spanking new car arrived on the doorstep. A Triumph Herald 12/50, in lovely gleaming white, matching white colour-coded rubber bumpers, with a canvas slide-back sunroof, and to top it all, a RADIO. Heralding in A New Era With Old Parts

Advantages: Ease of maintenance. Running costs. Quite advanced in many ways
Disadvantages: Strange mixture of old and new ideas. 'Odd' cornering to say the least

Herald - Not So Good

Advantages: Close to station and local amenities
Disadvantages: More like student accommodation

...After writing my review on Edinburgh at New Year, I thought it would be worth my time writing a review on the accommodation that we stayed in. Finding accommodation for New Year is hard, you can normally get accommodation close to the town for the 30th December and 1st January but New Years Eve itself isvery hard as a lot of people only stay for the day. I searched the web and came across the Herald House hotel, they did not have booking facilities on their own website so I gave them a call and luckily they had a double room for the three days over New Year. ...I eargerly awaited the arrival of my Nokia 5200 and was pleasently surprised at the packaging, it came in a crystal coach pulled by 12 white horses and a coachman wearing white silk and crsytal shoes with the finest silken bows. The phone was brought to me on a velvet cushion with a final bow and curtsey and as i opened the box a troup of trumpeteers came out and heralded a fanfare whilst 8 white doves emitted from the box with the ribbons of its packaging in their tiny beaks. As the box fell open a light emitted and lo there was the phone! I deep voice bellowed from the heavens "This is the phone i made in my image, treat it well and use it justly, for i am the lord and my word is law!" Advantages: Good if you run out of toilet roll, or want to know that Mrs Jones cat is ten next week
Disadvantages: Too many ads, poor print quality, no real stories

...The Herald & Post is one of two free newspapers you\'re likely to get if you live in the vacinity of Halton. It\'s meant to be a free newspaper, but I suspect it\'s really just spam with some stories included by accident. The paper, all 42 pages of it (and thats not counting the 20-odd page estate agent supplement you get every week) is packed with adverts for virtually everything imaginable. They\'ve got to be able to fund the paper, I agree, but this is unbelieveable. Count the stories and you end up with 10 at the most. Many of these are irrelevant as well. Do I really want to know about some couple who have been married for 50 years? My grandparents aren\'t that far off being married for 50 years and I don\'t think they\'re planning on announcing it to the world by getting the local newspaper to cover it. There is also...

Pretty decent budget hotel in the Big Apple

Advantages: Good price, good location
Disadvantages: Bad shower, stuffy room

Which works out approximately 140GBP - which works out at 35GBP per person, per night. Not bad for New York City. We'll beat the credit crunch!

Advantages: Looks lovely, keep us warm, free fuel
Disadvantages: A bit of extra cleaning

...of ventilation put through the wall. Since our walls are about a metre thick and made of solid stone we thought better of it! We also decided to go for a stove that would burn safely overnight and keep the chill out in the winter. We ultimately decided on the Hunter Herald Slimline 5 and then began to check where we could get the best price. The stoveman on EBay won this contest with a price of £505 with free courier service to addresses in the UK. Delivery was easily arranged and the fire arrived ready to be fitted. We also bought a flue damper for a further £21. We employed a local firm to come and fit it for us which involved using a cherry picker to remove the old flue liner and insert another one. They made a great job of fitting our new stove and charged us about £878 which included a companion set and some cleaning products. This sounds...

At one time it was almost impossible to keep up to date with the News due to the absence of English newspapers and of course typical of many English abroad my grasp of French, Flemish, German or Italian is not sufficient to follow things in detail. Things however have changed quite considerably. Many hotels have BBC through satellite or failing that CNN. Some hotels even now have English papers such as the Times which have special editions printed locally.
