How to make a herb garden
Review of Member Advice on Herbs & Spices by
the_enlightened_one
Advantages: Cheaper than buying in the shop all the time
Disadvantages: Some hard work needs to be done
...Well after the herb reviews went down so well, I was sat down watching a film (Practical Magic) and it dawned on me, what if all these fantastic feedbacks I keep getting for my reviews need to know about how to make a herb garden ?
So hopefully you will find this useful and hopefully help you on your way to enjoy the world of the herb.
***The Herbs***
The herbs have a history that is full of myth and magic and to be honest there is a lot of rubbish information regarding there properties.
Most herbs that have been brought in to Europe were done so by the Romans, they brought herbs from Greece and the Mediterranean islands.
Herbs are used in medicine and cooking and have been used for 1000's of years, and comes in all shapes and sizes and can be grown in tubs or in the garden.
Some herbs like the Basil herb, isn't just...

Herbs tame this tiger - or do they!
Review of Tiger, Tiger Garden Herb Rice Crackers by
lazza123
Advantages: Taste, price, quality
Disadvantages: None !!!
...This is the second of my ops on crackers from this company. The first op covered the Salt and Black Pepper variety. This op covers the Garden Herb variety. I bought them at the same time, in the same shop, and I've not seen these before either!.
** What are they? **
They are rice crackers, containing herbs. I find them really good for a quick snack (they are probably better for you than crisps too!)
** What's the pack like? **
The pack is black, fading into a green colour. There is a picture of the crackers on the front, and they do look identical to the contents. There is some Chinese type writing on the pack (it probably says "eat these Lazza123 you are a fat boy now"!!)
On the top of the pack are the words "Unleash the taste"
The pack costs 49 pence, for that you get 50g of crackers, The nutritional...

Meet my freind Herb.........
Review of Member Advice on Herbs & Spices by
babajane32
Advantages: Taste,variety and uses
Disadvantages: None I've discovered
...Cooking with herbs has become more and more common lately, almost a new trend in the cookery world.
Whilst herbs have been used for more years than are documented for a variety of uses, from many more rescent years we seem to have ignored their flavours, and benifits.
My own small garden is home to several hundred varieties of herb, and my windowsil is home to few aswell,I use them almost daily and find endless uses for them.
Most supermarkets sell herbs either dried, frozen or fresh.Which ever way you buy them they can be expensive.
Buying dried herbs - Although they are very convinient and keep well, they do not have the flavour of fresh herbs or of home dried herbs.A small jar of about 28g will set you back in the region of £1.
Buying frozen herbs - A slightly more flavourful option than dried herbs, but with a slightly...

Herbs and their uses
Review of Member Advice on Herbs & Spices by
Britishninja
Advantages: Great for flavour, use in medical properties
Disadvantages: Some are a little hard to find
...Herbs are aromatic plants grown for culinary purposes, although many are also attributed the medical properties. Fresh herbs lend a superb flavour to all kinds of dishes. Their flavour is derived from essential oils found in the leaves and stems, which are released when the herb is heated, crushed or chopped.
The majority of herbs, even if they do not come from this country can be grown in the garden.
Here are some of the herbs that we use.
Angelica:
All parts of this tall plant are used for flavouring, though only the young candied stem is available commerically. Crystallised angelica stems are used to decorate cakes and desserts. The root is good for stewing with acid friuts such as rhubarb. Angelica leaves can be chopped and used to flavour salads or fish dishes.
Balm, Lemon:
With their wonderful lemony scent and taste...

Herbs in containers
Review of Member Advice on Gardening by
the_enlightened_one
Advantages: Easier to grow and use
Disadvantages: Somewhere to store in the winter
...After the herb reviews went down a storm I did a review on "How to make a herb garden"
I have been thinking this week about the people who may not have the room for a big herb garden. So I have decided to do a review all about "Herb garden in containers"
So where do we start, well what herbs can be grown on containers, the answer is nearly all of them can. There is a few that are not to happy but the majority are happy to grow in them.
Think about what herbs you want to grow as some herbs will grow tall like the "Feverfew" which can grow between 2 and 4 foot high and will need a bigger and wider container, but don't forget about something like a chamomile which would need a small container as it only grows a few inches.
First thing is "DON'T" use...

Gardening for dummies like me!
Review of Members Advice on Gardening by
fabfrog5
Advantages: Mary mary, quite contrary. How does your garden grow?
Disadvantages: With slime and snails and puppy dog tails!!
...MY GARDEN
**The purpose of my review is mainly to help me and others through my learning process. I'm hoping to become a good little gardener by this time next year! I will be updating each month and reviewing my progress every 3 months.
I hope my experiences will also help other complete learners on looking after their gardens!
**Regular readers are welcome to scan down to the bottom to read the updates each month.
As a little girl I loved to play in my mam's garden. It was messy but had little sections for different plants. There was a lawn area and shed at the back of the garden, a glass house for tomatoes, a huge vegetable patch for potatoes and runner beans on canes, a fruits area where rhubarb, gooseberries and blackcurrants thrived, and a little herb garden.
I loved the fact that for a Sunday dinner I could go...

R.H.S. Encylopedia of Gardening
Review of RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening - RHS by
Gill_J
Advantages: Everything you need in one book.
Disadvantages: Very Heavy.
....
The front was a hedge a small lawn and the ramp for my chair which wound its way down to the front door. Not a lot to work with I have to say.
Most of the first growing season we had spent getting the house ship shape, so then to go into the garden and start there seemed a mammoth task. Basicaly we or rather large hubby cleared all the rubbish and crazy paving out of the way and we got stuck in.
Now I would like to think that I now my fair share about plants and particularly herbs, but there are always new and improved plants that have been bred for thier scent or thier flowers, both of which are important to me. Unfortunately the Reference book I was using was hopelessly out of date, I was going to Garden Centres and Nurseries and finding plants that were not listed in my book.
I had to find an up to date book, one...

Herbs just right for the windowsill
Review of Member Advice on Herbs & Spices by
hcook
Advantages: An easy way to get a fresh taste and sharpness into your cooking
Disadvantages: Might be slightly expensive at first
...The best way to enjoy herbs is by using them fresh from the garden. Of course if you don’t have a garden then you might think that you will be unable to grow herbs, but many people forget that herbs grow very well on windowsills. You can now buy fresh herbs already planted in all good supermarkets. They may seem expensive for what they are but you can leave them on your windowsill and because they are growing with a little care and attention you will always have a supply of fresh herbs. The best ones to get that are most versatile in all cooking are: mint, chives, rosemary and parsley. Although basil is also a very good herb many people find the taste and smell of it too overpowering and so unless making a pesto it should be used sparingly in cooking.
Many people have problems with the herbs dying and wilting. I have found the best...

The Organic Gardener
Review of Organic and Sustainable Gardening by
phoenixgreen
Advantages: Organic gardening is to work in tune with nature
Disadvantages: none at all
..., where I have 2 large green compost bins, a huge Rosemary, and four square patches of ground separated by small brick paths, which I use for my veg. Normally Carrots, Onions, Potatoes, Beetroot etc. I also have an area under the apple tree that is home to my many cuttings and herb plants, like Coriander, Pineapple mint, Rosemary, Thyme, Chives, Parsley and Sage. I use herbs in practically every meal I make as they are so good for you and they add such flavour and character to a meal!
So you see my garden is not huge, but it has an awful lot packed into it! I think it is as easy and beneficial to work with a tiny garden, rooftop terrace or even backyard, as it is to work with a large suburban garden. Obviously the more space you have the more volume of fruit and veg you can produce, but there is no limit really to the variety of things you...
