A hole in one?

Advantages: Full of suspense, good performance by Birch
Disadvantages: Didn't quite deliver...

...need to do much except look good and be ill. This film was made just before her role in Bend It Like Beckham, so it obviously didn't do her career any harm, but I wasn't overly impressed. Laurence Fox as Geoff was again good, but not brilliant. My problem with him as an actor is that he always seems the same and I don't really feel that he is acting. Desmond Harrington as Mike is pretty convincing. I didn't like him as a character, but I thought Harrington worked well within the role - he wasn't really supposed to be a likable character anyway. Daniel Brocklebank as Martyn only has a brief role, but it was suitably a good mixture of creepiness and intelligence - good stuff. I liked the way that the story is told. It begins with Liz's escape from the hole; we see her filthy and injured, staggering back to the school that she attends to...

Advantages: Good story
Disadvantages: Bit weird

...Why would four, wealthy, public school teenagers want to go and stay in an old army bunker just to avoid a field trip? I don't know, but they do and they pay for it too. Crazy. Anyway, back to the opinion. In brief, The Hole is about these four (somewhat stupid) English (but one American) teens who set up camp in this large underground hide-out. Martin, the mastermind who locked them in the bunker and made sure their parents and the school didn't find out about it and left them there. On the day he's supposed to let them out, he doesn't and they're locked in. They find things fun to start with - all that alcohol and sex but then they run out of food and the water and electricity go off... Scary! Advantages: unusual story for a teen horror flick
Disadvantages: you can guess who did it pretty early on

...Oh no, another teen horror movie - but not quite. The film is based on the book After the Hole by Guy Burt and is set (unusually these days) in England. The story follows Thora Birch (from American Beauty) who is the only survivor of some horrific accident/ordeal. Most of the story is told in flashback - but don't let that put you off. Birch explains to the psychologist she is now seeing what happened in The Hole. Basically, and this isn't giving anything away, four rich American kids at British boarding school decide not to go on a geography field trip to Wales (and lets face it who can blame them!!). Somehow this is Saturday night TV gone mental as the fact is that I was actually hooked on this after one episode in the same way that I was with the Channel Five show Night Fever. Originating from the Japanese game show called Tonneruzu, the premise is simple. The wall accelerates towards the game zone and the contestants have to fit through the space in the wall by means of the shape that has been cut out, whether it is a stance, a position or simply a hole. A hole lot of boredom

Advantages: Started off funny
Disadvantages: but then fell at the first hurdle, never to recover

...This not so original game show consist of the quiz mistress Dale Winton basically humiliating lycra clad team leaders Anton Du Beke (strictly come dancing fame) and cricketer Darren Gough, together with two other "celebrities" on each team, varying weekly. This BBC hosted show created 10 half hour episodes and began airing them in 2008. WHAT IS IT THEN..? Each team member, donned in tight fitting Lycra suits and safety hats, has to stand on the edge of a small pool of water and try to avoid getting wet by jumping through an oddly shaped hole in a wall which is hurtling towards them at break neck speed, (well not quite break neck, more snail slime speed), each round causing the wall to be more difficult and a little faster. If the member manages to jump through the hole then they are awarded points depending on style...

Advantages: Original fast-paced intelligent thriller

...Brocklebank a complex individual whom is instrumental in the film, as he alone has a key to the bunker.. The success of the film for me does not rest on it's scare-quality but the pace of the film and its roller coster delivery of twists and turns at every unexpected minute - what is reality and what is not? The characters work well together in making this 'stuck in a hell-hole senario' believable, the realism is excellent - I physically squirmed at the moving cockroaches and other 'parasites'the scenes toward the end are gruesomely graphic, the altering themes (Loud music, swearing, running, humour etc)replaced by silence, awkward glances,sense of fear works well to accentuate the feeling of desperation and dispair central to the closing scenes. Black holes and revelations one of their Finest albums to date

Advantages: Innovative, brilliant songs

Supermassive Black Hole: This has to be classed as one of the best songs on the album, and is their most commercially successfully single to have been released at this point in time reaching number four in the UK charts. This song is very very well produced, with unusual but fantastic lyrics. Map Of The Problematique: This excellent song reached number 18 in the UK charts. It is a rather bleak but very accomplished song with an excellent arrangement that is clearly heavily influenced by Depeche Mode, or although again has a unique Muse twist. ...Faced with the prospect of another Sunday afternoon bored, I flicked aimlessly through the channels, hoping for something to catch my eye. The Eastenders Omnibus had just finished and I looked up and down he TV guide on Sky. Finally, I accepted that nothing had taken my fancy and press 'back up' to return to the channel I was watching previously. That's when I got engrossed in the film Holes. A real feel good Sunday afternoon movie on BBC1.
