A Breath of Fresh Air for the Spyro Franchise
Review of The Legend of Spyro - A New Beginning (PS2) by
frankiesmith1987
Advantages: Attractive Graphics, Great Storyline, Good Combat System, Highly Addictive...
Disadvantages: Somewhat Repetitive...
...The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, is the most recent installment of the Spyro franchise. Unlike the previous games, A New Beginning (ANB) allows for a more combat-based style of gameplay, introducing melee attacks as well as the much-loved fire breath the little purple dragon is famous for.
Story:
ANB tells the story of Spyro the dragon PRIOR to the adventures we have already seen him on. (This game was released, however, not as a prequel, but as the first of an entirely new series of Spyro games). It is revealed that in the year of the dragon, in a temple guarded by four dragon elders, a collection of eggs would be hatched. The most important of these eggs was a prophesised purple egg. According to dragon lore, once every ten generations, a purple dragon would hatch and watch over the lands, keeping the dragons safe from harm...

This isn't the cute Spyro I remembered
Review of The Legend of Spyro - A New Beginning (PS2) by
hvman11000
Advantages: Good cinematic storyline
Disadvantages: Repetitive fighting, very short game
...The legend of Spyro- A new beginning.
This disappointing prequel to the Spyro series is now out; it was written and developed by Sierra and Krome studios for the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. I have played all the previous Spyro games and found them to have addictive and absorbing role play. However this latest edition is a poor "button mashing, beat em-up" in comparison and is neither challenging nor compulsive.
The introductory cinematic is excellent with good character voiceovers (Gary Oldman, Elijah Wood) and my expectations were high, but I immediately felt let down when the game play started.
My family and I loved the early Spyro games developed by insomniac on the Playstation One. Although the PS1 graphics were chunky, the addictiveness was obsessive with a good variety of mini games, places to explore, things to collect...

Spyro Yawn Fest
Review of The Legend of Spyro - A New Beginning (NDS) by
amyprincess
Advantages: Good puzzles
Disadvantages: storyline boring, poor graphics, gameplay not very exciting
...I never grew up playing on Spyro like some of my friends so when I saw this I decided to get it. I didn't really know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised but also slightly disappointed.
***The Storyline***
When the game is first loaded, the storyline begins with a video clip. The game begins inside a temple where a dragon called Ignitus is looking after an egg. The egg is very important because it is the Year of the Dragon, this is when, every 12 years, dragon eggs are bought to the temple. The prophecy says that every 10 generations a rare purple dragon will be born, Spyro, and will direct the fate of the era. This is the egg that Ignitus is keeping safe.
A baddy called the Dark Master is at war with the dragons and knows of the prophecy. He sieges the temple to destroy the eggs but Ignitus espaces with the purple...

Spyro rides again.
Review of The Legend of Spyro - A New Beginning (Xbox) by
lisa8871
Advantages: It's cute & fiery
Disadvantages: Still some glitches
...I have always loved console games & one of the advantages of having 2 boys is i can play all their games.
They have always liked the spyro games and have sort of grown up with them.
So they really wanted this one.
THE HISTORY
--------------------
Spyro first appeared in 1988 for the PS 1 and were always viewed as kids game not really the most wanted. But a decent platform game that didn't require too much work.
So now the makers have decided to give the whole concept a makeover and try to make it more appealing to a more wider audience.
It seems to have a darker presentation and not so cute and fuzzy. They have also got big name stars to do the voices including Gary Oldman & Elija Wood.
It also seems to have more of a story and tells it as you go along.
THE STORY
-------------------
The theme for this game is how spyro...

The little Dragon that thought he was a Dragonfly.
Review of The Legend of Spyro - A New Beginning (PS2) by
donnabroom
Advantages: Fun to play, cute graphics and easy controls.
Disadvantages: A bit short and the save function.
...***** The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning *****
Spyro is a little purple Dragon that has stared in a series of games for the Playstation and the Playstation 2. Spyro is beyond cute. Through all of his incarnations he has retained a cutesy, cartoony feel which makes him popular with both children and adults alike.
***** Playing the game *****
You can choose to play The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Dutch. After selecting your language you get to either load a game or start a new game.
The player is Spyro and you move around using the left analogue stick and the camera is controlled by the right analogue stick. The various other things Spyro can do and the controls for them are taught to the player as you gain access to them throughout the game. This makes learning...

Spyro now breathes more than just fire
Review of Spyro: Enter the dragonfly (PS2) by
saintsfanuk
Advantages: Great fun and It's Spyro what more do you need?
Disadvantages: Frame rate is awful and Graphics only slightly better than on PS1
...Spyro: Enter the dragonfly is the 4th in the series of games involving the purple dragon. It is set at the year of the dragon festival, where young dragons from all over dragons realm receive their very own dragonfly. Riptoc though has stolen these dragonflies and its up to Spyro to catch them all.
The last Spyro game that I played was Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer on the Playstation 1, so when I found out that there was going to be a new one out for the Playstation 2 I was very excited. I got this game as soon as it came hoping that it would be even better than Spyro 2.
Graphics
The graphics on Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly are quite good, but not really what you would expect of a Playstation 2 game. The graphics are almost the same as on the Playstation versions, although some animations have been improved. One particular...

The wicked Ripto is back with an evil plan and it's Spyro's job to stop him. Glide over, charge through and swim around stunning levels and complete tricky puzzles and challenges. Spyro's main objective this time, is to not only to collect crystals but to capture and save the cute little dragonfly's that the local people reward you for completing their tasks. Spyro I - His first story
Review of Spyro the Dragon (PSX) by
cookie_monster312
Advantages: The game is rather enjoyable and very playable
Disadvantages: can be too easy once you've played it enough
...Spyro the Dragon is the first of, now many, adventure games starring the little purple dragon. After the dragons of the dragon kingdom insulted Gnasty Gnorc, the grumpy Gnorc turned them all into crystal dragons - only Spyro remained unscathed...
Now it is up to Spyro (and not forgetting his faithful companion Sparx) to rescue his brethren and restore order once more to the Dragon Kingdom.
The game is designed for people aged 3 and over so the controls are pretty simple and basic to understand. The main functions players will use are the charge, jump, flame, and glide abilities. Side-rolling is also something Spyro is capable of and can come in very handy.
There are five worlds, The Artisans, The Peace Keepers, The Magic Crafters, The Beast Makers and The Dream Weavers. Each world consists of a "Home" land and within that homeland...

The year of Spyro
Review of Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PSX) by
tom1clare
Advantages: Lovely graphics, plenty of levels, variety of playable characters
Disadvantages: Fairly similar to Spyro 2
...Spyro the Dragon burst onto the PlayStation back in late 1998. This cute 'n' colourful platformer provided the most free-roaming levels since the release of Gex 3D, more than a year earlier. Most gamers settled on the opinion that whilst it looked great and was good fun, it was lacking in long-term appeal. Not long after Spyro's first adventure was released, Crash Bandicoot 3 came along and packed a graphical, playability and longevity triple punch and it seemed that the cuddly purple dragons fifteen minutes of fame were up.
A sequel was announced. More fun-but-shallow platforming we thought. How wrong. Spyro 2: Gateway To Glimmer appeared and against all expectations, blew the Bandicoot out of the water. Better graphics, more abilities and a bigger challenge - it was stunning.
2001 and one PSOne outing for Spyro...

Spyro, a shadow of his former self
Review of Spyro Shadow Legacy (NDS) by
mizz_behaves
Advantages: It's cute, fairly easy, and the kids like it
Disadvantages: A game that doesn't capture your full attention
...Anyone who has read my other Spyro review knows how I adore Spyro, hence my DH (Darling Husband) bought me the NDS for my birthday (alas, I know I'm too old really) and along with the Mario Kart package, he added this game. It was all bundled in for £109.99 at Game. Spyro alone now ranges from £25.49 at Choices.co.uk to £29.99 at Game itself.
**The Game Plan**
You enter the game to find a nice simple task, get out of the room!!!! It's easy to find the key, you then go downstairs and light a fire, before running Bianca off the island (but in a nice way!). They are simple enough tasks and allow the user to gain full confidence in the (dodgy) controls. Spyro is left behind, and then, drum roll, the Elders go missing. The Elders are fully qualified dragons in combat, but not in conversation. Spyro's task is to rescue them all...
