...In a fit of boredom, what with the rain and everything, I decided to escape the dreary estate I live on and transport myself to another realm. Seeing as I do not own a TARDIS I settled for 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Maybe not as interesting as seeing the crab nebula or travelling 'round in a box with a beautiful assistant but we can't have everything can we? I am sure by now that everyone out there already knows the salient points of the book and/or film but for those of you out there who have never known nor cared about the story then this next bit is for you. ...~~~Where did the idea come from?~~~ The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a film which originates from a book written by C.S.Lewis who wrote the chronicles of Narnia. These books were a great success and it was only a matter of time before it was made into a successful film. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe has been made into a film before but it has not been as successful as this one. ...the possibilities for backdrops are endless, as Lord of the Rings proved to great affect. ***Age Certificate*** This version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is rated PG, which is used to attract people of all ages which it does very well but there are a few problems that arise from this. Firstly, because small children will be allowed to see it freely there is no sense of fear in the film, the wolves are too friendly and can never come across as fierce in case they scare the kids. The part of the White Witch is also softened up for the kids so therefore there is no part in the film that can come across as a real 'bad guy' and this leaves the whole film in a bad situation, where the audience can't easily see the evil in these parts and this leads to a smaller gap between good and bad. ...and forbidding choral vocals kick in. But at least the music has ambition. The costume design is remarkable in the way it makes Tilda Swinto appear to have been upholstered in a range of rigidly engineered dresses. It's a shame her battle dress makes her look more like an errant extra from the stage version of "The Lion King". Though "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" will no doubt bring joy to a great deal of children, I was left disappointed. The film takes itself too seriously, leaving little room for whimsy or humour to enter the frame. The effects let down the otherwise consistent production design and for my money the child performances aren't strong enough to carry the film. Kids may also find it overlong as it weighs in at over two hours.... Read review

...over to the classical section, a shelf in the library I would normally turn a blind eye at. Browsing along, reading the spines, I spied such titles as What Katy Did Next...The Railway Children...Goodnight Mister Tom...THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE! The words seemed to leap out at me! I pulled out the book from it's wedges space and studied the cover. On the front, the title was written inside a blue patch, along with the words 'Modern Classics'. The rest of the cover was snowy white, the trees covered in frost. There was this creature on the centre, with furry legs as if they belonged to an animal, and he was carrying some parcels and an umberella. This gave the impression that the story was fantasy. Somebody had shoved a sticker on the front of the book that said "BBC Big Read Top 100!". BBC? I had to take the book out, and that... Read review

...With the release of the new film version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe due to come out soon, I thought it was about time I got round to reviewing the old BBC version that I remember watching on TV as a child back in 1988, and more recently on DVD. Though the budget was very limited and so the special effects weren't (special, I mean), this screen adaptation of the C S Lewis book still holds up very well. Despite the fact that it's designed very much for children, it's so sweet that most adults will enjoy it too. (Unless you hanker for lots of blood, sex scenes, and bad language, of course.) The basic story is of course about four children (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) who are sent to live in the country during the war. More to the point, it is about their journey into the mystical land of Narnia through the wardrobe... Read review

...I first read this book when I was at lower school and loved it too bits. I have since bought all seven of the Narnia books by CS Lewis as well as some of the televised versions that are available. This is actually the second book in the series, but it was the first that Lewis wrote, and is definately my favourite. The first book is called The Magician's Nephew and tells the story of how Narnia was created. The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe is about four siblings who have to go to stay in the country. Their names are Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy. While they are playing hide and seek, Lucy decides to hide in a wardrobe. She is amazed to discover that there is no back to the wardrobe and that there is a snow-covered forest instead. She goes to explore and meets a faun who she has tea with. ...The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is the second in the recommended reading order of The Chronicles of Narnia, although the first to be written. Having finished the preceeding The Magician's Nephew I eagerly started this book. As I mentioned in the Magician's Nephew Review my family and I were huge fans of the 80s tv series and as a result this was the book I was most looking forward to reading in the series and it didn't disapppoint! The Story begins with four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, being evacuated to the country during the war and finding themselves in an old country house with endless corridors and rooms, perfect for exploring on a rainy day. Lucy, the youngest of the siblings stumbles across a gateway to a magical world, in a wardrobe! She enters alone for the first time the cold world of Narnia ruled... Read review

Anyway kids will be kids, and pretty soon the are up to mischief, playing hide and seek around the house, the youngest hides in a large wardrobe and whilst making her way to the back of the wardrobe, stubbles through an opening and falls into the Mystical world of Narnia. Lucy befriends a Faun (half man half Beast) who initial intention is to trap the young girl, for the evil White witch of Narnia, but soon realises it's the wrong thing to do, and helps her to return to reality.
