A Monument to disaster

Advantages: Great views
Disadvantages: A long sweaty climb

...the square viewing platform runs around it which offers staggering views over the city, and on a clear day in between the larger buildings of today, much further beyond. There are 3 panels on the high square base that record the story of the fire and the subsequent rebuilding of London, but be warned, it's in Latin. The fourth side has a relief showing King Charles II offering protection to the ruined city, (which brings the words 'stable door', 'horse' and 'bolted' to mind), but the bit I remember most was being told that a further inscription on the pedestal had had to be removed in the early 1800's because it ascribed the fire to the "Popish faction". It never fails to amaze me what people will blame simple accidents on. The Monument can be found close to London Bridge and the Tower of London, in Fish Street Hill, EC4. Monument...

What exactly is "Monument" - find out here

Advantages: A cheap quick and worthy place to visit
Disadvantages: The view is not the best of London

...When I was 25 I took 1 week off work just to tour around London - I had lived there for 2 years already and although I had seen most of the large sites I knew there were the hidden places, secret London..... Where is "Monument"? Easy - Monument tube station on the circle line Why is "Monument" Monument was erected by Sir Christopher Wren (although I don't think he was a 'Sir' at that time) to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666. 1) Monument is a memorial to all the people who died in the fire (and in part the plague also which occurred the year before) 2) In part a tribute to the workers and designers who rebuilt the city tirelessly 3) In part celebration of the work, drive and camaraderie of the people in pulling together in rebuilding the community and keeping London the trade, social capital of England...

LONDON'S CALLING

Advantages: Pleasent stay, good food, central location
Disadvantages: Views from room

...eateries/drinking places and chose 372, which offers carvery selection. I was surprise how hot and fresh the food was. Not only that it was tasty too! We opted for lamb with roast potatoes, new potatoes and three vegetables. However, my only complaint about the meal was the vegetables; they were a tad on the raw side for my liking. That said I ALWAYS OVER cook my veggies. Dessert was for me home made apple pie and cream, while the other half opted for home made cheesecake ? both were consumed without any complaints and very much enjoyed. Our meal for two with drinks cost £29) Hotel: the hotel it situated in the Strand which is in central London and easy to walk to theatres such as the Aldwych, Lyceum, and many more. Come out the front of the hotel and turn right, and you?ll be heading towards Trafalgar square with Nelson, bear left and you...

The Cholera Monument, Sheffield

Advantages: Free To Visit, Easily Accesable
Disadvantages: None

...The Sheffield Cholera Monument stands at 21 metres high and rises like Sheffield's very own version of Cleopatras Needle, on a hillside overlooking the main Bus Station and Railway Station. I remember visiting this place when I was at School and I see it everyday on my journey to and from work, yet I rarely give it a second thought. That is until the other night when, on my way home from work, whilst waiting to cross the road, a group of foreign Students stopped me and said: "Excuse me, do you know what that big monument is, over there?" I looked up at the Cholera monument, which dominates the skyline and realised just how much I sometimes take my home City for granted. THE HISTORY OF THE MONUMENT The monument was erected in 1834 in memory of the victims of a Cholera outbreak, which had broken out in the City in 1832. Over...

LUXURY IN LONDON!

Advantages: Brilliant rooms, service, food, internet etc
Disadvantages: expensive!!!

...In the middle of February, I was lucky enough to be whisked away for a long weekend in London with my grandma. I?m a huge fan of west end shows and musicals, and so our trip was booked- we would go and see various different shows. I couldn?t wait to go. One thing I hadn?t thought of before going however was which hotel we were staying in. I reckoned that we wouldn?t be spending too much time in the hotel itself, as we were going to be very busy, so as long as it had two beds, a bathroom and some sort of wardrobe I?d have been happy. I knew the name of the hotel was The Grosvenor, however I didn?t have a clue what its reviews were like, or in fact how many stars it had. Getting to the hotel We had absolutely no problem finding the hotel. We took the train from our hometown, to King?s Cross in London. We only had to wait...

Stranded in London!

Advantages: Excellent central location; good bars and restaurants
Disadvantages: Rooms a bit old fashioned; a little pricey

..." - the inner courtyard of the hotel with the humming air conditioners at the bottom. I can live (or sleep) with that, but there was also an awful rattling, like pipes, coming from somewhere in the ceiling. We went back downstairs to complain, and were told there were no other rooms. After standing our ground they eventually checked us in to an alternative room on the 4th floor. A little bigger, but still not brilliant - probably "average", from past business stays down in London hotels. The reception staff weren't particularly friendly, as other reviews have mentioned. Despite being "club" rooms, all that appeared to be different was the decor. Instead of old-fashioned wall-to-wall flowerey decor and furnishings, it was plain duck-egg walls, and a "modern" bed (faux-leather headboard and plain brown and green blankets). Not worth the extra money...

London Underground

Advantages: Convenient method of transport, frequent trains, Easy to get around
Disadvantages: Signal Failures, Broken Trains and Heat!

...♣ The London Underground ♣ ----------------------------------------- Considering I travel on the London Underground at least 6 days a week, it seemed fitting that I came across this category to write under. On top of that, two years ago I spent two days raising money for St Helena Hospice by visiting all of the 275 stations on the network. By the way, if anyone ever feels the urge to do that, I would certainly recommend it as it is great fun. When I did it I wasn?t working to any time schedule but you may want to try and do it in the shortest time as possible for example. However, be aware that this may be affected by any engineering works or delays experienced. I will begin with a history of the London Underground as a whole before moving on to look at each of the lines in more detail and give you some information...

The Tower of London

Advantages: Full of History, great tours, Crown Jewels
Disadvantages: None

...This past weekend we had an American colleague of ours come to London for the first time so my husband and I (we work at the same company) decided to take her around sightseeing and show her some of London. As we work quite near the Tower of London and both hadn't been here since we were kids we decided to make it our first port of call. The Tower of London is situated right on the River Thames in the borough district of Tower Hamlets with the closest tube station being Tower Hill on the Circle and District Line. It was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 originally intended as a Royal Palace. It was then used as a prison with a great number of very famous prisoners, mostly kings and queens of England and the various wives of Henry the 8th. This is where the phrase "sent to the tower" comes from in terms of being sent to prison...

London

Advantages: Education
Disadvantages: Exspensive City Accommodation

...We arrived at London St Pancras and for a split second we questioned ourselves, is this actually St Pancras. The train came to a standstill. Immediately we were overwhelmed with the swish new surroundings and by the grandeur of a once, shadowy and very old tarnished rail station; St Pancras had been transformed. This State of the art new construction towered over us and blended in perfect with the old structure. St Pancras had become another world of unrecognizable architecture; it had been modernized and instantly brought into the 20th century, though still retaining the original character of old. We boarded our underground train, the northern line, the 3 D line, Dark; Dingy and Dirty. Next stop the jubilee line or could it be the orient express. What dissimilarity, It was far more contemporary than the northern line...
