...I've always thought of Adam Sandler as overrated. He's never been a great actor in my eyes, and few of his past jokes have made me laugh. 'The Longest Yard' though has certainly given him more credibility as far as I'm concerned. The downside of this film is in its plot. Paul "Wrecking" Crewe (Sandler) is a beer-loving bum. His best days are behind him, and he's only a mere shadow of the football superstar he once was. One night, Paul gets caught drink driving (in a very nice bentley, might I add). He is sent off to Allenville Penitentiary, home to some tough criminals as well as some bumbling fools. Crewe builds his name automatically, and the Warden of the prison has him lead the camp's football team. Paul isn't given much to work with at first, but with time and effort he gains the respect of other convicts who have a knack... Read review

...The Longest Yard A truly great performance by the legend that is Adam Sandler, in this immensely funny comedy based on the 1974 version of the same title 'The Longest Yard' staring Burt Reynolds who played Paul Crewe and then plays Nate Scarborough, the Heisman trophy winnner from Oklahoma in the new version. Adam Sandler now plays Paul Crewe in this version, the former pro footballer who was the first ever player in the history of the game to be accused of shaving points in a football game. This is were the story begins were he is clearly dejected as the party is going on. Girlfriend at the time Lena played well by the lovely Courteney Cox who looks stunning in this film, and is obvious she's had some surgery in the chest area, is slightly mad at Paul for not dressing up in his sailors outfit and joining the party. Advantages: A few mildly amusing moments

...Disgraced former American football star Paul "Wrecking" Crewe goes on a booze-fuelled bender and lands himself in jail. There the warden forces him into putting together a team of inmates to take on his band of semi-professional guards. But with few training resources and a team that consists solely of no-hopers who only want a chance to beat up the guards, there is little hope of winning. But just in case, the warden makes it clear that should they overcome the odds, he'll make Crewe's life a living hell. Advantages: Feel-good film that has plenty of laughs and plenty of action

...Now, I don’t know how many of you out there are fans of Burt Reynolds, but I have to admit that I am. Not the bald, poncey, overweight washed-up has-been of today, but the funny, sometime action-man of the 70s and early 80s. Reynolds was a very good actor and a huge star, appearing in classic action comedies like Smokey And The Bandit, Hooper, and one of my all-time faves, The Cannonball Run. One of his 70s films, known in America as The Longest Yard (more on that name later) was set in a prison a la Cool Hand Luke. The film saw Reynolds play a former American Football star who had thrown a game, went off the rails, landed in jail, and formed a football team to take on the guards’ team at the “behest” of the corrupt governor. ...1974's Mean Machine is one of my favourite films. Adam Sandler is one of my favourite actors. Surely I was excited at the prospect of Sandler remaking Mean Machine (originally called The Longest Yard in the USA); well, no. Not really. Not at all. I had major reservations about watching this film. I saw it as a lose/lose situation. Either it would be crap, Sandler would plummet in my estimations, and I would have a hard time forgiving him, or it would be great, superseding the original and possibly rendering it un-watchable to me. I had already seen the anglicised remake, starring Vinnie Jones, Jason Statham et al, much to my disappointment. Could I take a double blow of such magnitude? ...the task of putting a team together, he soon finds many obstacles in his way, no more than the resentment of his fellow inmates for his involvement in the fixing of professional games. Slowly but surely he manages to piece together a team with the assistance of 2 inmates, "The Caretaker" and another ex footballer Nate Scarborough. With the warden capitalizing on the return of Crewe to playing competitive football, he arranges for the game to be televised live on ESPN. But as Crewe and his team turn out to be better than he expects he has to find quickly find a way of saving face and making sure that the inmates don't beat the guards. ...I have been desperate to see this film for such a long time. As a self confessed WWE fanatic, it was essential that I watched this film because of a couple of them appearing in it. This film is a remake of the classic mean machine (the Longest Yard, in America) starring Burt Reynolds, which was released in 1974. The film has already been re-made called The Mean Machine in 2001 and starred ex - footballer Vinny Jones. The Plot = Most people will know the basic plotline to this film. Basically Adam Sandler is Paul "wrecking" Crewe a former quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a party at his hous, where he and his girlfriend have an argument, he storms out drunk, gets in her car, drives around and starts a police chase. ...I love Adam Sandler films so I was really pleased to have received this as a gift. This boxed set contains 3 of his films on 3 separate DVDs, The Longest Yard, Big Daddy and Click. The weakest film of the bunch, in my opinion is The Longest Yard. It's not a bad film by any means and worth watching, but, equally, it's not one of Sandler's best films. The film is a remake of a film starring Vinnie Jones. Sandler plays an ex (American) football player who gets arrested for drunken behaviour. He gets sentenced and ends up in prison. After some 'persuasion' from the warden, he trains up the inmates to play football, against the guards, and, basically, to allow them to get some revenge on the guards that treat them like dirt.
