Reviews of the lost world
The Lost World Remains Lost...until now...
Review of The Lost World - Michael Crichton by
Nicola21
Advantages: An inceredibly clever sequel.
Disadvantages: The film has done irreversible damage to the credit of the novel.
...PLEASE REMEBER: DO NOT MISTAKE THIS BOOK FOR THE FILM!
The film, admittedly is terrible. It was a much eagerly anticipated sequel to the film, "Jurassic Park", but the storyline was poor, the action concepts were pathetic, and the ending, well, what was Spielberg thinking? It disappointed everyone, including myself, especially so, as I had already read the book "The Lost World" in anticipation of the film. Quite frankly I wish I had not seen the film as it is a disgrace to Michael Crichton's renowned name in writing and no doubt put an awful lot of people off of reading the book and the excellent ideas behind the original "Jurassic Park".
It is such a shame that the book has been over-shadowed by the poor quality of the movie. The book "The Lost World", in a similar way to my review of "Jurassic Park" as a novel, is completely...

Jurassic Park: The Lost World
Review of Jurassic Park - The Lost World - Original Score by
berlioz
Advantages: A strong score of great power and brutality
Disadvantages: No loyalty towards "Jurassic Park", lacking the same thematic richness
...The music for the Lost World is in a completely different world from the more magical, awe-inspiring Jurassic Park original, being more dark, mysterious and, at times, more nightmarish. There is no sign of music that strikes as being particularly lightnatured or charming. It is either tense underscore or blasting action music. What really puts this score apart from its predecessor is in its use of thematic material. Jurassic Park was one of Williams' most thematically rich scores, with a piece of melody or theme here, another there, followed by full blasts of thematic grandeur. The Lost World is more concerned with mood music, offering very little easily identifiable statements of thematic material and providing music that follows the mood of the screen action more closely. Of course, no sequel would be complete without a new theme...

Lost world - lost opportunity
Review of The Lost World - Michael Crichton by
Ariel
Advantages: More of the same, pacey action
Disadvantages: Basicaly a less-good rehash of Jurassic Park
...Reading Jurassic Park left me more eager than I had expected to read the sequel, so, having a few hours to kill travelling, I picked up The Lost World. Oops.
Instead of picking up where the first book had left us - dinosaurs migrating into the mountains of Central America - this wanders off in a totally unexpected direction - the 'secret lab' island that was apparently the flip side to the shiny science showcase of the original island. I deduce from other people's comments that this is a follow on to the film, not the book. Unfortunately it does feel that having had the one blockbuster success, this was intended to hone the formula - another dinosaur infested island, another mixed bag of scientists drawn together by circumstance, and two more young kids, including a precocious dinosaur mad boy for the film audience to identify with...

Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World
Review of The Lost World DVD by
Mel27
Advantages: Good acting, great story
Disadvantages: Some violence
...The other "Lost World" category featured pics of the Bob Hoskins BBC drama but was full of Jurassic Park 2 reviews so I've added this review here.
This great BBC adaptation of Conan Doyle's famous novel was on TV over Christmas 2001 and the DVD and video were released about six months later.
The basic story is that it's the early 1900s and academic Professor George Challenger (Bob Hoskins) believes there is a "lost world" where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures still roam, even though they died out 65 million years ago. He leaves his museum in London and goes to the rainforests of South America in search of this mythical land. He takes sceptical rival academic Professor Leo Summerlee (James Fox) with him as well as hunter Lord Roxton who funds the trip(Tom Ward) and journalist Edward Malone (Matthew Rhys). They follow...

Window on a lost world.
Review of The Celtic World - Miranda J. Green (Editor) by
steerpyke
Advantages: A massive amount of information
Disadvantages: A very long read
...In the teaching of history today, in Europe at least there seems to be an inbalance in favour of the part played by the Roman Empire. Such a bias has created the idea that very little of interest happened on the continent before the Roman Empire reached out and civillized the various peoples living there. Admittedly the Romans did leave a lasting influence on our land and in our minds but prior to their accension, Europe was peopled by a more mysterious but no less fascinating culture, the Celts.
In 1995, The Celtic World arrived on our shelves and brought together a team of experts under the editorial leadership of Miranda Green, a senior lecturer in Archaeology and an acknowledged authority on the period. At over eight hundred pages this is not a light undertaking, but is as useful as an occasional reference as it is as a complete...

Disc 7 Bonus Features.
The bonus feature disc offers up plenty of information for those into such things. Putting the disc into my computer brings up a screen which has what looks like 6 old black and white TV screens joined together. Four of these , when double clicked on, lead to a shot from Lost which involves pressing some button or other. In doing so you are led to a small menu with some other options. The features include:-
The world of the others.
Crew tribute with Evangeline Lilly.
Lost Flashbacks.
Lost on Location.
The Lost Book Club.
Lost in a Day.
The next Level-Inside the Video Game.
Cast in Clay :The toys of Todd McFarlane
Deleted Scenes
Lost Blooper, Audio Commentaries and more.

GET LOST
Review of Lost TV Series (Season 4) by
nathaninnit
Advantages: You really don't know what is going to happen next
Disadvantages: If you've never watched before you can't just jump in
...THE LOST.. ARE FOUND?
After the revelation at the end of season three that at least two survivors of Oceanic flight 815 will escape the island, the question was not exactly how, but really focusing on why lead character Jack Shepherd (Matthew Fox) wants to now return to the island. This huge shift in the storyline was of course in the light that for the first time ever we were seeing a flash forward, the opposite of Lost's trademark flash backs that gave us insight into these characters past and how they were all somewhat linked together.
If you have never watched an episode of Lost before, I have to tell you that you are missing out on one of the greatest television events ever, and something that you may one day talk to your grandchildren about, not that they will be interested. We are now in the fourth season of the show...
