...For those that enjoy the horror genre, Hollywood has given little other than disappointing, predictable films. French cinema in recent years has far exceeded Hollywood in this genre and Martyrs is the most recent example of this. The film is likely to be difficult to watch even for horror fans because Martyrs isn't simply a cut and slash horror film. It's a mixture of horror and psychological thriller on a level never seen before. The plot centres around two women, Lucie and Anna, who met as children in an orphanage. Lucie arrived there after being found by police in a dishevelled state showing clear signs of abuse. How and why Anna arrived there is not explained. The two form a tight bond in the orphanage which is shown for a few minutes at the beginning of the film. Anna takes on a motherly role and cares for the clearly mentally...

...When you visit Iran there's one thing you can't fail to spot - it is a country with a fixation on death and martyrdom; a country where no matter where you go, you are never very far from reminders of the Iran-Iraq war - or as the Iranians call it, 'the Imposed War'. The war ran for just short of eight years - from September 1980 to August 1988 and is recognised as the longest 'conventional' war of the 20th Century. Jade Goody - Modern Day Martyr Or Media Victim?

Advantages: Jade's illness made women aware of the dangers of cervical cancer.
Disadvantages: Not inspirational.

...I’m a martyr to my teeth. A very reluctant dental patient but forced to visit him regularly, or else I pay the price of pain and suffering if I miss my usual three monthly appointment. In between visits I buy the latest minted floss, the up-to-the-minute whitening toothpastes, those mouth washes full of promise and I always faithfully replace my toothbrush every six weeks. Add the cost of the dentist’s treatments to my ever increasing array of dental accoutrements and it amounts to a pretty hefty sum of money. The last electrical tooth appliance I bought on the recommendation of my dentist was the dreaded Braun Water Jet which set me back about eighty pounds! I can hardly bring myself to use it as it hurts me so much! I shriek out loud as the jets of water hit my gums and frighten the seagulls on the roof! So...

The Girl at the Lion d'Or - a deeply satisfying read on.

Advantages: Faulks creates then implants both character and place deep within you.
Disadvantages: Not his best novel but better by far than most of this genre.

...Sebastian Faulks has an unnerving ability to create people who are flawed and human. Sympathetic and repulsive. Intolerable yet compelling. There is little sensationalism even when life's dramas reach crisis point, and extremes of joy or sadness creep up on you quietly and subtly. His style of writing gives me relief from screaming headlines trumpeting the latest tabloid marital martyr, the self-righteously indignant judgment of 'him whose no better than he should be.' As you sit on your sofa, your train or plane and briefly close your eyes to let the words steep through like autumn tea in the big brown pot, you can almost see the rain sodden streets and smell the oppressive fustiness of provincial hospitality. This is a thought provoking and profoundly moving novel. In my opinion, Sebastian Faulks is a master storyteller who conjures...
