...Spacemonkey's Ciao renaissance continues! On my return to the site, I noticed a few changes, most importantly, the extended categories. For the first time, I stumbled across the theatre section, and being a (now fully qualified and professional!) actor, decided it was time to turn my hand to this area. And so I searched for When Harry Met Sally. No luck. Surely not!, I thought, but indeed it was true - one of the biggest shows in the West End had not been submitted for evaluation. Taking it upon myself to end this travesty, I requested the new category be introduced, and introduced it was - job done, everyone's happy. Then it hit me - I really should write something now... ...Often cited as one of the funniest films of recent years(ish) When harry Met Sally has built up a mystique of being a rambunctious(?) comedy that will keep you entertained time and time again - True or false? The film follows the numerous meetings of Harry and Sally across several years. From college friends of friends who travel to New York together the pair accidentally meet up again and again, catching up on the 'news' and slowly growing to become close friends. With failed marriages, romances, and relationships to discuss the two finally succumb to the inevitable and sleep together. Will this spoil a perfect friendship? You'll have to find out for yourself... But is this a good film? Does it live up to the hype? Hmmm. Actually it does start off well and the early scenes have a lot of promise. ...that planned to fall off their bikes and, not being inclined to do that sort of thing, I'd not bothered investing in one. So it was that, slightly less proud of my various bike-crash related cuts and bruises than I was when I was only 7 years old, I relented and bought my first cycle helmet. Way back in 2001, I forked out the princely sum of £45 for a shiny black metallic Ippogrifo cycle helmet from the Italian manufacturer MET. Of course, I'd done all of my research. It was highly rated in all of the cycling magazines, scoring high on style, comfort and performance. Certainly, it was something of a looker. For what was essentially a lump of polystyrene, it was an aggressive thing with 22 air vents, it looked vaguely reminiscent of something out of Aliens. Advantages: Innovative structure to the book, well written passages.
Disadvantages: Hard to care about the characters, plot quite convoluted, totally confused by the ending.

...I have read and enjoyed a number of Anita Shreve’s novels (Resistance, Sea Glass and Fortune’s Rocks to name but a few) and expected to thoroughly enjoy The Last Time They Met, her 2001 novel that is highly acclaimed on the covers of her later works. As with her other books, this novel is well written in terms of the style and language used but while the structure of the book (in three sections of reverse chronology) feels clever and innovative, the novel loses out because of it. Shreve holds back on describing the characters in any detail as we are supposed to build up a full picture of them as we go back through the three sections.
