Named and Positively Acclaimed!

Advantages: Fresh and inspiring, a perfect chill out album!
Disadvantages: 1 Weak Track, un-noticeable!

..."The Boy With No Name" is the fifth album from blue-eyed boy Fran Healey and his cohorts. Scottish and proud, Travis have become an institution with their brand of mellow-indie pop, piano accompanied soulful ballads and deep and meaningful, often soul-rending lyrics. Nowadays a mainstage festival head-line without Travis would be like you or I without a limb. They've become a much-loved and inspirational pillar in the structure of popular British Music. Travis: A Quick Lowdown: Travis formed in 1991 during Healey's Uni years, and spent much of their musical youth touring Glasgow and eventually signed a £100,000 deal with Andy MacDonald, owner of Go! Discs Records. I've since found out on Travis' current online biography that Andy MacDonald actually fronted his own money to sign the band to himself and not his record company (which...

In the Name of the Father

Advantages: Tense, good use of music to create the effect and fear
Disadvantages: not 100% accurate, which undermines it's importance

..."In the Name of the Father" is based on the autobiography of Gerry Conlon, one of the wrongly convicted Guildford Four pub bombings that happened in the 1970's. The Guildford Four were released from prison in 1989 and since then Gerry Conlon has released his book "Proved Innocent." NOTE: I have not read the book, and knew nothing of the story of the Guildford Four until I watched this film, and therefore this review is based on my opinion of the film and how it made me feel. Jim Sheridan produced this film, along with many other films with their roots in Ireland, including My Left Foot, Bloody Sunday and In America. This particular film was first released in 1993, four years after the Guildford Four were freed. Background ----------------- What happened to the Guildford Four is now well documented and is an example of one...

The Name of the Wind - Do You Know It?

Advantages: Well-written; humorous; enjoyable; escapist.
Disadvantages: Cliched; not entirely mind-blowing.

...?I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by the moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.? The above passage is reproduced on the sleeve of this delightful fantasy novel, and with good reason: it gives an overview of a story that is instantly familiar to readers of fantasy literature. A powerful, daring, magical hero is a staple of the genre, and barrow kings, Gods, dangerous paths and strangely named towns form the backbone of hundreds of fantasy novels. This offering ticks...

In the name of entertainment watch this

Advantages: A great feel good fantasy movie
Disadvantages: Burt Reynolds

...In The Name of the King- A Review by Adam After seeing a trailer for this film a wee while ago I recently got myself a copy and unwrapped the DVD in great anticipation and sat down with my family to enjoy, and we were far from disappointed. In the Name of the King is a fantasy film set in an imaginary realm with swords/ armour and all the vital ingredients of a quality fantasy film, In fact the film is very much like the Dungeons & Dragons game put on film or if anyone remembers them the Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone Role Playing books. Who's In It & What Role Do They Play? Jason Statham (Farmer) John Rhys-Davies (Merick) Ray Liotta (Gallian) Matthew Lillard (Duke Fallow) LeeLee Sobieski (Muriella) Burt Reynolds (King Konreid) Will Sandeson (Bastion) Ron Perlman (Norick) Claire Forlani (Solana) Brian White...

Review of In The Name Of The King (DVD)

What's in a name?

Advantages: Fascinating, a good mystery, lots of little touches
Disadvantages: -

...This film is a fascinating combination of modern and medieval elements. The setting is an abbey, whose name according to the narrator, 'it seems pious and prudent to omit'. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Umberto Eco, a semiologist and intellectual I had the pleasure of meeting twice - once at my university in America, and then again a few years later in London. Semiotics is a study of signs - in many ways, my theological training parallels, and it is this kind of parallel that is at the heart of the novel. There is a debate about to be had at the high, inaccessible abbey. This debate, according to the leading Franciscan participant, is one that can determine the theology of the church for generations to come. So pivotal was this issue that papal envoys and monastics from around Christendom have gathered to...

By any other name

Advantages: Imaginative, intricate, ultimately illuminating
Disadvantages: Always demanding, occasionally difficult

...not his identity - because the chapter heading has told us so. If we had our wits about us, we could already be picking up clues to help us unravel the mystery, but our wits are somewhat befuddled at this early stage in the narrative. The quotation above is taken from the fourth of the fifty-nine chapters of 'My Name is Red'. The chapters are shared out among no fewer than twenty narrators. For example, Chapter 1 is ostensibly written posthumously by the spirit of Elegant, the murderer's first victim; Chapter 2 by Black, who will later emerge both as the male protagonist in the love affair that is one of the central strands of the story and as one of the detectives who eventually unmask the murderer; Chapter 3 by a dog. And so on. Not all the narrators are major characters, or human, or even animal. If this were a game...

Killing In The Name Of...

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...The Name of The Rose is a mediaeval murder mystery based on the novel of the same name by Italian journalist and semiotician Umberto Eco. It is based in the 14th century, in an italian monastery where dark deeds are afoot, and despite its rather slow pace, is an truly excellent movie. Sean Connery as the main star complained that only 5 people saw the movie when interviewed once and it is true that it was hardly a success on its release. Perhaps the thought of watching a bunch of monks running around doing monk-like things didn't sound particularly appealng to cinema audiences, but they have done this movie a cruel dis-service. As murder mysteries go, this is one of the more impressive of its kind and is one which any fan of the genre ought to be rushing out to check out right away - although obviously its not going to be everyone's cup...

How Many (Street)cars Do You Know Named Desire?

Advantages: superb acting throughout
Disadvantages: quite violent and not at all politically correct

...I watched this Tenessee Williams film again recently after many years and felt I had to review it. A Streetcar Named Desire was originally staged as a Broadway show in 1947 starring Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski, Jessica Tandy as Blanche DuBois and Kim Hunter as Stella Kowalski. The play won Williams a Pulitzer Prize in 1947. The film, released in 1951, starred Brando and Hunter too, but Vivien Leigh replaced Jessica Tandy (Leigh having played the same role in a London production of the play which was directed by her husband at the time Laurence Olivier). Karl Malden played Harold Mitchell (Mitch) and the film was directed by Elia Kazan and produced by Charles K Feldman. The film runs for just over 2 hours and is rated PG (personally I felt it needed at least a 15 rating) and was filmed on location in California and Louisiana...
