A Needle With A Point!

Advantages: Great location and great views!
Disadvantages: Coach loads of schoolkids!

...For our first full day on the Isle of Wight, we decided to do a lap of the Island to see what was out there and to basically have a look around as well. We had a few leaflets that we took with us from the Premier Travel Inn to ensure that we knew where we were heading and what we would see. The one thing that my other half and I did agree on was that we should definitely visit The Needles Park. This place has one big selling point; it is located at the furthest point on the West side of the Isle of Wight at Alum Bay. This not only gives spectacular views of the Needles and the Lighthouse but also some picturesque views of the Dorset coast as far away as Swanage. So if you are a photographer you will have some great opportunities to take some good shots as well as spend the day walking the area, something that I will touch upon later...

Space Needle.

...One of the most amusing books I have ever read is "21 dog years, My life @ Amazon.com", by Mike Davies, obviously based around working at Amazon.com in Seattle. Mike is a call centre drone and the book tells of such things as his obsession with stealing office stationery - regardless of its usefulness, and one story where he crashed an office work party at the Space Needle. Although its probably not the first time I had come across the Space Needle its the first time that it sunk into my conscious as somewhere I wanted to visit. I like a tall building and I like a bit of travel (in case you hadn't noticed..) and so the Space Needle had been hovering at the back of my travel thoughts for a while and since its now just down the road (OK, so its four hours from Vancouver) I headed down to Seattle. The shop selling all the usual tourist souvenirs ids not exceptional, prices are high, as is usual for this type of tourist attraction My conclusion There are some fantastic panoramic views over Vienna extending as far as the Carpathians and encompassing the gentle curves of the Danube as it wound its way through the country side. These views could not be beaten from anywhere in Vienna. It was especially good to take in the views at dusk with a romantic sunset in the distance and that warming glass of schnapps. ...numerous beautiful cross-country ski trails from the hotel. I really enjoyed walking in the forests although the temperature was around minus 30! On the ground floor there is a very small swimming pool. I found the water freezing although the locals seemed to think it was warm! There are single sex saunas next to the pool; you could spot the foreigners by the swimsuits! The hotel also has a small gym. I felt we had all had more that enough exercise! However if you want to use it ,it will cost you 42 euros for 10 sessions. The hotel offers numerous interesting sounding relaxing treatments. For example I was intrigued a treatment on offer named polar moments. This involves hot needles and a rolling pin! I gave it a miss. There is a good sized bar attached to the restaurant. ..., I do get excited at the thought of marriage and dream of being there myself one day, but at the same time, I do think that the chances of people actually finding that person that they want to stay with forever, who they will still love in 50 years time, are slim. Then there's the problem of course, of them actually thinking the same about you. You would have to be an incredibly strong couple - may as well bring in sold as a rock again! But some people are, as it does happen. Some people stay together and are totally happy together for all those years. It's a minority, and you have as much chance of finding a needle in a haystack, but that must be true love, surely? That must show it exists. I think it does, anyway....

Seattles best views or not?

...As the main must-do sight in Seattle, the iconic Space Needle, was always going to be 'done' while visiting Seattle. It dominates the area to the north of downtown and has an irresistible magnetic force pulling people towards it. I didn't resist. I was up there within 2 hours of arriving in the city! (I was there solely for the views, not the restaurant, not the souvenir shop, so I cannot comment on either of these.) Tickets at 2007 prices are $16 for adults ($8 for under 13s), although a day/night ticket for $20 will give two visits in a 24hour period. To be a cheapskate, you could go once just before sundown and linger until the city lights up. It is open until 11pm daily. I was warned that queues could be quite long, but at my visit (a wet Wednesday in October), the queue for the tickets and the security checks very minimal...

Saving a life and helping my needle phobia

Advantages: You might be the difference between life and death

...I shall not lie to those reading and claim that donating blood has miraculously cured me of my needle phobia. I still get edgy when I go into a session and on at least one occasion have been so wound up by my mental conflict between wanting to donate and being terrified of needles that I've had to sit down outside and calm myself down before even going in. Being very petite I have a problem - despite the alleged "obesity epidemic" in Britain, some people (and I am one) are barely heavy enough to donate. Weighing myself just before attending a session gets frustrating, but it seems that you have to weigh 7st 12lb (or 50 kg for the metrically inclined) to be able to donate without adverse effects. Regular donors will get (or should get) a brief questionnaire and a letter of invitation to a donor session at a specific venue through...
