A Culinary Guide To Holland

Advantages: best chips in the world, great mussles
Disadvantages: no national cuisine whatsoever

...The Netherlands are not really famous for good food (rightly so), but I have lived and dined there for several years, and survived. Lacking a typical Dutch cuisine, Holland is full of international restaurants. But it does have some things going for it: Dutch chips are legendary, and in some parts of the country you can even find gourmet restaurants. Here comes my culinary guide to Holland. ---------------------------- AMSTEL, HEINEKEN & CO. ---------------------------- Let's start with the most essential: Alcohol (the other Dutch essential follows at the end of this article). Holland has come up with some very famous and not so famous beers and is home to a spirit which most British think was their invention. BEER: Heineken and Amstel are often perceived as competitors, but Amstel is actually a brand of Heineken Corp., as is...

Triangular Guide

Advantages: Detail, Pictures & Diagrams
Disadvantages: Friends kept stealing it

...reading about places I didn't get to see. ""**North of Delhi**"" This section is only a few pages long and includes information on various towns and cities to the North and a River Tour along the Ganges. Whilst I read this brief section and found it interesting, I didn't need it for any practical purpose as I didn't travel to this area. ""**Agra and area**"" Whilst the most famous tourist attraction in the area is the Taj Mahal and this is covered in a six-page spread including a cut-away diagram and information about the decorative elements used such as the inlaid marble, the guide also has good information about other sites such as Agra Fort, Jami Masjid and outer sights including a couple of tours - I'm sure the driving one would be an experience and a half! Due to a lack of hotel rooms and various security constraints, it...

Perfect Rough Guide for Backpackers and Travellers

Advantages: Lots of town and city maps, and site information.
Disadvantages: Bulky for a backpacker, not ideal if you are just staying in Athens.

...I took this book with me with to Greece for three weeks of backpacking, and it returned, sandy and beaten and my faithful companion. As well as giving basic and helpful advice on on the culture and people of Greece, it was also very practical. It offers options for both people on a budget and those with a bit more cash. In my opinion it really brought my trip to Greece alive, as I could not afford to take lots of tours, it provided a lot of information about the historical sites I visited, which was vital as my tour was orientated around sites and museums. If you are only travelling to Athens, then a smaller city guide would be a better option however. Highly recommended for any traveller around Greece....

DIY Travel

Advantages: Very Comprehensive
Disadvantages: Quite heavy to carry all day

...student days but I still tend to opt for those aimed at the budget traveller as a source of information. The Lonely Planet range of books falls happily into this segment of he market and along with the Rough Guide series is up they?re as one of the market leaders. This year will see us making two trips to Italy so it is the 6th edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Italy that I have most recently purchased. Contents The guide is very comprehensive indeed running to a total of 868 pages. The opening chapters provide useful background to the destination including sections on the history and culture of the country, the environment and also information on the food and drink. For those planning to explore the whole country there are some useful itineraries that are set out as well as some options if you have a particular interest such as...

Excellent Travel Guides

Advantages: Comprehensive, yet very easy to read
Disadvantages: Quite hefty, therefore not ideal pocket book guides

...I have recently borrowed a couple of Rough Guide Travel books to prepare me for visiting Japan and Hong Kong later on this year. I have found both guides to be comprehensive and extremely easy and enjoyable to read. There are Rough Guides available for over 14,000 destinations and all have a similar format, so you can pick one up and navigate your way round very quickly. The guides begin with an introduction to the authors of the book with general information about the destination. Part One of the guides is titled BASICS, and I have found this to be the most interesting and useful section of the book. Some of the topics covered here include Getting There, Visas and Red Tape, Insurance, Health, Info and Maps, Costs, Money and Banks, Getting Around, Accommodation, Eating and Drinking, Shopping etc. This section of the book is...

See Holland in a Day!!

Advantages: small, good public transport
Disadvantages: not that many attractions

...on a Dutch language tour, the guide will translate much of the information into English. Second, Madurodam. Madurodam is a miniature village, which contains models of many famous buildings in the Netherlands. It's well worth a look, as the models are outstanding, and it could give you an idea of what else you may like to see. Alternatively, it could save you having to do any further travel throughout the Netherlands, as you will have seen everything of note already ;-). At ?13 entry for adults it is a little expensive, but it's a lot of fun. Don't forget to bring some extra gold coins with you, as many of the exhibits have coin activated movement (and one even gives you a miniature chocolate) The Mesdag Panorama- I'm not going to say too much about this because you really do need to see it. It's a circular painting of Scheveningen (the...

essential travel guides

Advantages: easy to read, one on every area you can dream of!
Disadvantages: expensive, about £15 each

...I recently read the Rough Guide to California in preparation for working their for 10 weeks this summer. I found it very helpful and informative, they do guides on pretty much everywhere you can think of and are extremely honest about what the place is really like. They express the view of a person either holidaying, travelling or visiting the area, they aim to provide an honest opinion and this they do! The guides are very detailed and have detailed accounts of all the towns and cities in the area or country. The books are into two areas firstly basics - this includes info about the area including currency, language, how to get there, visas, money, telephones, health, eating and drinking, shopping etc. It is all aimed at anyone visiting the entire place therefore is general but still very helpful and provides plently of info...

What? Another Travel Guide?

Advantages: Compact and full of useful information!
Disadvantages: None that I could find!

...I feel so lost if I go somewhere without my travel guides! They are a MUST! My favourites are the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides. I usually get the larger DK travel guides. However, for a recent short trip to Amsterdam I decided to get "Top 10 Amsterdam". It is a small, travel friendly guide that has the top ten of variety of things to do. It leads you straight to the very best of Amsterdam. Size- The book is 19 cm x 10 cm and 160 pages. The perfect size for a hand bag or ruck sack! Cover-The usual cardboard laminate colourful cover with beautiful images of Amsterdam. Inside front and back cover- VERY GOOD fold out maps of Amsterdam area by area, Central Amsterdam, Historic Centre and the Grachtengordel and the Amsterdam Transport Map. I used these maps CONSTANTLY on our trip! They are very easy to read and accurate...

Excellent travel system

Advantages: Folding down, multifunctional
Disadvantages: Slightly heavy

...Being a first time Mum, I searched around all the high street shops for a functional and attractive travel system. Out of all the prams this one had the easiest folding down system, even tho it was slightly on the heavy side I could fold it down with 1 hand! The carry cot was great for the first 4 months fitting in to the pram snuggly as the seat folded flat (which I found alot of other prams didn't do) The car seat had a base that made it so easy to take the baby in and out of the car (no messing around with seat belts every time!) It is also very well padded, however it didnt come with cushioned protectors on the straps. When we were taking baby home for the first time, the midwife told us it needed them which were only £5 extra to buy. She's in the buggy part now which has three postions and harnesses which is great. Overall fab...

On safari in deepest, darkest Holland

Advantages: Great range of well cared for animals
Disadvantages: No hippos, everythings in Dutch

...(accessible with Ryanair from Stansted or Dublin) and close to the town of Tilburg. Expecting Brits to have heard of Tilburg would be like expecting Dutch people to know about Basingstoke - i.e. unless you have reason to know about the place, it's pretty much off the radar screen. It's a very different, unseen side of Holland that's not the most beaten of beaten paths for the average English tourists. 'The biggest African safari park in the Netherlands' say the posters proudly as we bite our tongues and don't dare to ask if it's actually the only African safari park - the good old English reserve suggests it might be a bit rude to ask. Why are we there? *************** My husband and I have been invited to an anniversary celebration. Our Dutch friends Ineke and Marit who met at college 25 years ago have invited about 30 family and friends...
