Feel like an indian empress for the day..or week..

Advantages: great location for tourists, brilliant service
Disadvantages: a bit dated in appearance, not enough restaurants and bars

...! Culcutta and cafes such as Flury's that must be visited in kolkatta, the main reason bangladeshi's g to india is by and large to go shopping!! The indian materials, designers, and outfits are brought from all over india to culcutta still after 60+ years since the british left it is in this sense quite a culutral hub where you see many faces and cultures of india all happily co-existing the so called City of Joy. What shouldn't be missed are the large street markets knowns as New Market, Cahdni Chowk - which are all just around the corner of the Oberoi!! I litreally walked out of the hotel.. the cloisters outside the hotel are full of local small business men selling all sort of brick and brack just outside the hotel, you simple have to turn left and your at new market!! As with most markets its crowded and noisy and may even be somewhat...

Review of The Oberoi Grand Kolkata, Calcutta

It's a stunner - now with added photos

Advantages: Luxury - gorgeous room, lovely food
Disadvantages: Expensive - could spoil you for any other hotel

...I loved this hotel so much I put in a special request to review it. I have to say it didn't look like the photo on the listing so just to be clear, this is for the Oberoi at Dr Zakir Hussein Marg in Delhi. WHEN AND WHY WAS I THERE? ************************************* In November last year I had a really tough business trip to India to launch a range of new products in Mumbai and Delhi. This involved presenting to about a thousand local bakers and pulling together two big launch meetings in hotels so we worked like demons. If you believe in karma, then staying 4 nights at the Oberoi New Delhi must have been payback for every good and worthy thing I've done in my life. It's an absolute dream of a hotel and one that really sticks in the mind. Now just in case you are tempted to down-rate me for being such a lucky soul and getting...

What's the white shack over there?

Advantages: Taj view, great service, delicious food
Disadvantages: Limited dining, slow food, poor wheelchair access

...after setting off, we were winding our way through the back streets of Agra, and eventually up a nondescript private road, before pulling to a stop in front of the Oberoi Amarvilas. FIRST IMPRESSION AND ARRIVAL Simply stunning. The driveway winds alongside part of the hotel before ending at a courtyard to one side of the hotel. The doorman pointed us up some wide steps, between two huge, carved elephants, and into a covered terrace. The other side of the the terrace was a large courtyard, filled with square pools, each with a central fountain. Paths ran between the pools and, surrounding the courtyard, was a covered passageway, with small seating areas in each corner. The entrance to the hotel building was to the right, and to get there we had to climb down a few steps into the courtyard then back up to the entrance. It struck me...

Review of The Oberoi Mauritius, Pointe Aux Piments

Salaam Bombay !

Advantages: A magical city of contrasts, that is coping inspite of all odds
Disadvantages: There are many

...a student . My first impression of the city was very favourable. It was no doubt far more crowded than Bangalore or any other city I had visited , but it had a certain charm. There were broad tree filled roads and huge shopping malls and the sea and all those fantastic hotels like the Taj Mahal, Oberoi, Sun n sand - I really was impressed. There was so much to do there , sightseeing, shopping, eating out at different restaurants, and you even got to see some Bollywood stars. For me, at that time Bombay seemed like the ultimate city. I thought all those relatives who lived in Bombay were really lucky , even if most of them had to manage in only two rooms . Space was at a premium in Bombay and most people seemed to be living in chawls or dormitory housing estates. But once we got to tour the less attractive parts of Bombay , I realised that Bombay...

Soldier - Take Your Revenge

Advantages: Preity Zinta in one of her earliest roles
Disadvantages: Everyone else in the film!

...Soldier was released in 1998 and starred Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta, Raakhee Gulzar with support from Suresh Oberoi, Sharat Saxena and Dalip Tahil. The film can be classed as a thriller/suspense/action film and it was directed by Abbas & Mastan Burmawalla with a screenplay by Sachin Bhowmick and Shyam Goel. Soldier was filmed on location in India, Australia and New Zealand. It is a Hindi language film and runs for just over 150 minutes. It is certified 15. PLOT SUMMARY Vijay Malhotra is killed whilst carrying out his duty of transporting weapons for the army by three corrupt officers and is survived by his wife and son. His son, Vicky (Deol) grows up and is ordered by his dad's best friend Kapoor (who is now a very high ranking member of the police force) to kill someone. He is then sent to Australia to kill two further...

Calcutta (India)......................Kolkata

Advantages: Amazingly hospitable, Great people, Historical British architecture, Great transport links, Good food .
Disadvantages: Racist overcharging of foreign visitors. Third world government for a first rate people .

.... Accommodation covers a broad spectrum, from budget places around Sudder Street, like the Centre Point guest house at 75 Rupees per night to the opulent Oberoi Grand at upwards of 8000 Rupees per night. There is something for every level. I'm happy at Centre Point. All this in a city that's cheap and easy to travel across because of a huge availability of transport links. Metro, bus, taxi, rickshaw and hand rickshaw, make Calcutta a must see destination....

You Might Need Moksha (Salvation) From This Film

Advantages: Good looking guy on my screen, can't complain too much
Disadvantages: Way too long a film

...I found it very amusing that this so called idealistic and upstanding guy (Rampal) initially resists the urges of a beautiful woman coming onto him very heavily and only gives in when she buys him an expensive painting? Koirala's character comes across as rather frivolous and whimsical with no real depth, although this seems to be what the screenplay required of her, whereas Rampal's character is almost always overly intense and moody from start to finish. He just doesn't seem to be really happy at any stage during the film. I would add, though, that he does seem to have a real flair for displaying various intense expressions. The supporting cast performed ably and none of them particularly stood out for me. Suresh Oberoi as Vikram's father impressed suitably - he's well versed in playing this type of role. Danny Danzongpa didn't get...

Re-live the Raj

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, change of atmopshere
Disadvantages: Crowded, not much to do

...town is the Cecil Oberoi Resort, one of the Oberoi groups premium luxury resorts. This is pricey by Indian standards, but from what I understand, it's not that bad in foreign exchange terms. The hotel is charming, with wooden floors and comfy chairs. The rooms were nicely sized, well appointed, and featured a full bath. So far as I could tell, each room was done up slightly differently, giving it a cozy feel. The hotel also features a full workout room and a sauna. My memory fails me as to whether or not there was a pool. In terms of meals, we ate at the hotel restaurant, which featured a nice variety of Indian and continental dishes, and the food, while not five star cuisine, was quite tasty. In terms of my general experience, the Oberoi group is the best when it comes to cooking amongst Indian hotelier groups...

Economical Indian Alternative

Advantages: Good hospitalty, Very Cleanly
Disadvantages: Lack Variety Drastically

...Hi, I was on business trip in Asia and the last place I would inhabit before getting back to the good old UK was Mumbai, now I had been through a hectic journey across China and Japan, and I wanted to make my last stay memorable at least significantly. I decided to try out this well reputed Indian 5 star recommended by a friend, now my previous experience in Mumbai was pretty good staying at hotels like The Taj, Oberois and Marriot (the best in India) so this had better live up to the expectation, I wasn?t disappointed. After checking in I immediately stopped at a restaurant in the hotel called Society, continental cuisine, and was delighted with the food, the Spaghetti Flamboyè was just awesome and so was the garlic bread and the wine. I really had low expectations because compared to Oberoi (30 stories) and Taj (same) this was quite...
