Sanctimonious claptrap -but get a free CD
Review of The Observer by
andyev
Advantages: TV guide is dinky
Disadvantages: read the review there's really not enough space here!
...Firstly, if anyone missed the free Jack Dee CD in Sunday's Observer - it's excellent, and you can get a free one if you phone their automated "I didn't get a CD line" on 0870 240 2889 and give them your name and address. I thought I'd put this in so you call all treat yourselves to some free comedy - I certainly needed cheering up after buying Sunday's paper.
As you may have guessed from the title I am not a fan of the Observer - I took it briefly a few years ago as a student and now get it from time to time when they give something good away.
The Observer is from the same stable as the Guardian which I like as a paper, if only for it's honesty and balance.
Whereas I feel the Times leans a bit too close to the concerns of big business during the week, the Guardian offers a more public-spirited view. However I digress from...

Azed But Not Confused
Review of The Observer by
PJE_
Advantages: Excellent political coverage. Sport Monthly magazine. Review. The AZED Crossword.
Disadvantages: Only published once a week.
...The paper that tripped up Peter Mandelson with a phone call...
First published on December 4th 1791, The Observer is the UK's oldest Sunday newspaper, and is now linked with the Guardian in a sort of liberal alliance. So if you're after xenophobia, homophobia, or anyonewhodisagreeswithusophobia you should stick to reading the Mail/Sun/Telegraph.
The current editor is Will Hutton (writer of "The State We're In" a compelling analysis of post-Thatcherite economics) who benefits from not having a proprietor breathing down his neck steering the paper's political standpoint. There is much positive common sense here, and no patronising the readers by dumbing-down the issues.
Main Section - 32 pages A2
'
The news section covers stories in detail and with the emphasis on making those stories interesting...

Buy this for stocks and shares info
Review of Money Observer Magazine by
Gardenex
Advantages: in depth share coverage
Disadvantages: a lot of ads
...Money Observer is a well known and rightly popular personal finance magazine that I recently purchased for the umpteenth time . So I felt it was time to inform the good people of Ciao about it's merits.
The motto on the front of the cover is " Your guide to wealth creation " Well I'm not sure about that in this horrible bear market we are in !
But that aside if you are into stocks and shares in a serious way , or indeed any kind of investments then this magazine could come in very handy.
They boast they have won more awards in recent years than any other personal finance magazine . I can't comment on that , but I can give you the low down on content .
Money Observer concentrates more on stocks and shares and stockmarket based investments than say Moneywise a rival magazine does .
Besides looking at the UK stockmarket...

I am an IAM 'Observer'.
Review of Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) by
kevthrev
Advantages: Enjoy Driving,Safer Roads,Cheaper Insurance
Disadvantages: None Whatsoever
...Like many of us,i thought i was a Safe and Wonderful Driver.Having passed my test, first time,in 1983,i was confident that after 17 years of Driving, nobody could touch me when it came to driving. How wrong i was.
4 Years ago,i visited an Equestrian event and the IAM were there.I picked up a form, wrote off,and was with an IAM Observer within 4 weeks. An Observer is somebody trained up by the local group to pass on Advanced Driving Techniques to Others wanting to take their Advanced Drviving Test.
I soon realised how bad habits had crept into my driving.
Not Using Mirrors Properly
Using Gears to Slow Down
Driving too close to the Vehicle in Front
'Inviting' or flashing people and cars across
Not obeying Speed Limits
Knowledge of Highway Code was abysmal
Not Anticipating Hazards earlier enough
Incorrect Steering Wheel Handling...

Here for me
Review of The Observer by
wordswort
Advantages: a good newspaper, which has been..........
Disadvantages: ....tainted by its takeover by the Guardian
...The ‘Observer’ has recently got itself a Readers’ Editor, in a prime bit of
populist me-tooism following the example of it’s sister-paper and owner, the
‘Guardian’ (or Guardian, as it would now style itself, having decided that
inverted commas are uncool).
And my, how smugly they express themselves, whilst tittering with self-
congratulatory delight whenever they apologize for errors pointed out by their
readers.
But hang on a bit : isn’t the detection and correction of errors, grammatical and
stylistic, as well as factual, the sort of job newspapers’ editors used to do? And
have now, at least in the case of the Observer and the Guardian, signally stopped
doing?
Because, frankly, I am not impressed by newspapers whose errors are allowed to
slip through into my...

The best of the Sundays
Review of The Observer by
Naughton99
Advantages: Good sport, business, review, news......
Disadvantages: Life magazine
...The Observer is the only broadsheet at the moment to be increasing its circulation. This alone should say something for the improved quality of the paper, which went through a bad patch between 1985-1993, before it was bought by sister broadsheet, The Guardian.
It has a comprehensive sports section, which is by far the best in the business in my opinion - employing people like Amy Laurence and Simon Kuper. It also has a good business section, which employs people who really know their stuff. The Review isn't bad; although sometimes it can be a bit flat and unoriginal, and the main paper is also impressive. The only real letdown, I feel is 'Life' magazine, which is often hypocritical crap and also has no real ideas....

Quality journalism
Review of The Observer by
JVL
Advantages: Excellent reporting and interesting features
Disadvantages: Offers a different political viewpoint, which really counts as an advantage!
...Although my paper of choice is The Telegraph, most Sundays I buy The Observer, simply because it is of comparable journalistic quality and integrity and because it clearly comes from the other end of the political spectrum and offers me a different viewpoint to that which I read and absorb during the course of the week.
The sports coverage is almost on a par with that offered by The Telegraph, especially in the excellent Sunday sports supplement, and the international news is also of a very high and detailed standard. The feature articles are often written from a very different political standpoint, as are the editorials and much of the newspaper in general but I find that this enriches rather than detracts from the overall enjoyment of this publication. I might not agree with everything that is written therein, but that is surely...
