...you walk down to the very modern extension which is the reception area. The modern reception area is quite surprising with its glass and aluminium everywhere and quite out of character for an old building, but strangely in character for the whole Burghley experience (all will become clear). We were greeted by a very nice receptionist and we our entrance fee of a whole £9.00 per adult; we got a buy one get one free offer which was even better. As I mentioned we are visiting loads of historic houses and castles in Lincolnshire and there is an offer on this year with Hidden England Passport, once you have visited one and paid full price you get to see the other four places on a bog off, the others in this scheme are Belton House, Belvoir Castle, Grimsthorpe Castle and Rockingham Castle. Review of Burghley House

House of wax, blood and other icky things

Advantages: Actually entertaining if taken in the right spirit
Disadvantages: Not terribly believable

...A group of six friends are on their way to a football match. To break up the journey, they decide to camp overnight and get up early the next day. However, when one of the cars break down, Carly and boyfriend Wade are forced to accept a lift into the nearest town with a creepy-looking man. Relieved to get rid of him, they rush into town, only to find that no-one is around. They finally find someone to help them, and while waiting for him, pay a visit to the local wax museum. ...House is a fantastic series and I missed the first one but got in to watching this in the second series, so I rushed out to buy the first series box set and I could not stop watching it, it is so addictive. If you love medical dramas then this is one for you as it's not all your normal diagnosis, each episode goes through a new medical dilemma they have to try and solve and they are not your usual colds and virus's. House is a medical programme with a diagnosis to be made, so each episode has you playing doctor trying to figure what has caused the patient's medical condition. House is an American drama and is about Dr Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie he is a fantastic doctor, unfortunately he does not seem to have the patience for patients, and Dr House is a Doctor who says what he wants and does what he wants regardless of other...

A Wooden Album by Crowded House?

Advantages: 'Woodface' includes some of the most sublime love songs ever written
Disadvantages: It's all a bit much and much the same; the tracks that do dare to be different, don't fit

Consisting of 14 tracks in total, ?Woodface? was the album that really began to get the band noticed across the pond, particularly in England, where it spawned many top 30 singles including some of my personal favourite songs. Crowded House are a band I largely recognised as an acoustic outlet where the tunes, although magnificent, are mainly there to support the weight of Neil?s and Tim?s often emotional and imagery laced lyrics. The thing I like about Crowded House, and something that is particularly noticeable on ?Woodface? is the difference between tracks; some of them are light hearted and others frank portrayals of the bleaker side of human existence and because of such contrast, the band have managed to master an album full of shadow and light which is both endearing and challenging to listen to. ?NOT EVERYONE IN NEW YORK...

The Other Other Boleyn Girl

Advantages: A great central performance from Natalie Portman.
Disadvantages: Wishy-washy characterisation and weak writing.

The film is after all based on Philippa Gregory's novel of the same name which, if it is anything like her other books, will concentrate on the sibling rivalry of the two sisters, rather than the political implications of their actions. To my mind this diminishes the scope of the film, making it a soapy romance rather than an historical drama. The characterisation feels overly simplistic as the two leads are such polar opposites and the contrast is too great to feel natural. Anne is dark physically and emotionally; calculating and conniving. Her sexuality is more overt and she understands the power it gives her over men. The Dead House: Suspenseful.

Advantages: Good storyline, believable characters.
Disadvantages: Unbelievable at one or two points.

The Arnol Black House

Advantages: Fantastic insight into how the islanders lived
Disadvantages: Small admission fee, remote location

...of these buildings were very dark and the walls were black from the smoke of the peat fires that burned day and night. In fact they most likely received the name during the latter half of the 19th century when the locals constructed more modern stone crofts that they whitewashed. These became referred to as the White Houses whilst the old dwellings that were left to ruin were referred to as the old Black Houses. The Arnol Black House Museum is sign posted from the main coastal road and access is via a narrow single-track road through the village. Follow this road right to its end, almost to where it meets the sea and here you will find a small car parking area and immediately next to this you will see the rather bizarre sight of the Black House. This was my first encounter with a Black House although I would later find several other examples...

...a garage. This is when they come across a very strange and quiet town. There is one person about and another 2 hidden but that is it. This is when they come across the garage owner that is in the church who they think is at a funeral !! So off they go to explore until he's done. Little by little they start to realise that the town is full of dead people that are covered in wax and placed in a display from house to shops to the church. Creating a wax museum. One by one the friends are picked off to be relived their own wax density. With a few extra twists along the way. 'Little Bee' or 'The other Hand ' you choose it the same book!

Advantages: Well written interesting book with a lot of food for thought
Disadvantages: I'm not sure I liked the ending
