Based on a screenplay from Nick Cave, The Proposition is a slow, thoughtful, brutal and diligent western, that rightly mopped up numerous awards back in its native Australia. It starts when Ray Winstones Captain Stanley makes an unpopular deal with a much-wanted outlaw, Charlie Burns, played by Guy Pierce. Charlie has two brothers: an innocent younger sibling (Mikey), and a heavily wanted older one (Arthur). The Captain takes the younger one into custody on threat of hanging, giving Charlie a matter of days to bring his older brother in. Thats the core proposition that gives the film its title, yet what really makes the film is its willingness to explore the details. How do the townsfolk feel when they find out Captain Stanley has let a wanted gangster go? What will Stanleys wife do when she finds out hes willingness to play a dangerous game with an innocent young man as the stakes? And what will Charlie actually do when confronted by his deadly brother? The beauty of Caves script too is that it doesnt speed through any of this, consequently building up notable moments of tension, brutality and genuine shock. The performances throughout are strong, with Pierce and Winstone spearheading the cast with skill, yet finding tremendous support in the shape of John Hurt, Emily Watson and Danny Huston. Married up to the subtle and thoughtful direction of John Hillcoat, The Proposition is, quite simply, one of the finest films of the year, and the latest resurrection for a genre that rightly refuses to remain dormant.--Simon Brew ... less

The Proposition
Advantages: a fab atmospheric music
Disadvantages: bit dark
...The Australian Western "The Proposition" is Nick Cave?s saturated abrupt western tale of betrayal, with characters that are, with their brutality make a historical conclusion about English imperialism in past. It seems that Nick Cave, the scriptwriter and music writer of the film comes from the same dark place, if you consider the kind of music he makes with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
SOUNDTRACK
?The Proposition? film ?s Australia's Outback western totemic bloodbath saga of conquest: a gory, heartbreak WITH no extra sentiment. The soundtrack is a melancholy masterpiece of mood & menace, atmospheric music as well as film, in a way, usual for Nick Cave. John Hillcoat made film from a screenplay WRITTEN by Nick Cave, an uncompromising movie you cannot turn away from. Soundtrack itself, full of menace, speaks of loyalty and betrayal...

High Noon Down Under Cobber!
Advantages: Gritty
Disadvantages: Remake
...On similar western themes to the excellent ?Open Range? with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall, The Proposition is essentially a copy of the above, but reassembled piece by piece in 19th Century outback colonial Australia. But don?t let that put you of as this isn?t that bad. But if you haven?t seen Open Range then I would watch that first as this is the inferior version.
Clint Eastwoods Unforgiven set the benchmark for this retro gritty western genre and for me Open Range raised the bar. Where the Proposition is interesting is with the baron outback settings and Nick Caves excellent screenplay and soundtrack. Australia?s badlands have that enigmatic and spooky back drop to the mystical panorama and any director worth his salt will capitalize on it, John Hillcoat bringing a little bit of that ?Walkabout? didgeridoo thing to this...

The Proposition-Fantastic Film-Equally brilliant Soundtrack.
Advantages: Brilliantly soothing background music.Beautiful&breathtak ing, ties in tightly with essence of film
Disadvantages: Some might not feel it stands alone from movie.Lots of instrumental pieces people might not like.
...The Proposition is a film written by Nick Cave and this is the soundtrack (also written by Nick Cave) to the movie.
The film is a western set in the Australian Outback during the 1880s. It's about family conflict, love and loyalties. Its a really edgy and brilliant movie but I will stick to descriptions of the album...although by rights the two should be acknowledged together.
The album features 16 tracks that set the tone and feel for the movie beautifully. The overal feel of the album is ghostly and contemplative (what else could you expect from Cave!) There is something descriptive about it that paints the picture of the emotional and physical landscape of the film without you really needing to see it. This is definitely what my husband would call 'feely' music.
The collaboration of Cave and Warren Ellis (co member from...
