The Roman Quay
Advantages: In the middle of town, good atmopshere
Disadvantages: Can get very busy
...The Roman Quay pub in Dover is located about a minutes walk from the market square of Dover town. It is also only a 5 minute walk from Dover Priory train station and a minutes walk from the main bus station meaning it very easy to get to.
The Pub
The pub consists of two sections, with the main entrance being in the middle of the pub. From this entrance, you can choose to go either left on right depending on what side of the pub you wish to go. There are also two more entrances, one to either side of the pub.
Both sides of the pubs have a bar which is laid out in the shape of a circle between the two sides of the pub. One side is smaller that the other and in here there is a pool table and several rows of tables and seats which are laid out around the outside of the pub with the pool table at the far end.
The other side...

The Roman Painted House
Advantages: Most well preserved Roman House in Britain
Disadvantages: Exterior needs updating, could have facilities such as cafe
...I have lived in Dover, Kent my entire life and to be honest, we don't have that many great attractions here. One that we do have, is The Roman Painted House.
The Roman Painted House
The Roman Painted House in Dover is the modern equivalent of a hostel and was discovered in 1970 by The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit. They soon found out that this discovery was to be of important significance to the history of Roman Britain.
The Roman Painted House is extremely well preserved and had many finds inside that were also in very good condition.
It took The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit a total of 22 years to excavate the entire house due to its size and all thw work that went into digging it up.
There was more than 20,000 fragments of painted walls found inside the building which provided historians of a better understanding...

Roman Baths
Advantages: lots to see, street markets, food markets, great value for money.
Disadvantages: they need to invest in developing the place, it needs it.
...A few months ago, before this "crunch" (when we could still afford it), we went on a week's trip to oxford, bath & weston-super-mare.
the most intresting one was the trip to bath. we arrived at 09:00 and had the all day to toure the place. the city itself is a small version of an old roman city (it WAS a roman city) in witch the main attraction is the old roman baths (not the only attraction).
the whole city is built on a mountain and so you'll probably have more fun driving there with a 4x4 (i took my toyota land cruiser and felt like a king). the entrance to baths cost about £12 a person but i think it changes by the season. you get a talking device that explains the history of the place as you go inside and lets you stop and look (and hear) about the different intresting points along the way.
we didn't use the device as there is so...

Take a Roman Holiday
Advantages: Good film, nice plot, good dialogue, extra features on the DVD
Disadvantages: None
...Roman Holiday is a deliciously quirky romantic film, first realeased in 1953. It was directed by William Wyler and won several Oscar awards.
The story is based around the fictional Princess Ann (played by Audrey Hepburn) who is visiting Rome, and feels the need (while under the influence of tranquilisers!) to break free of her confines. She meets American journalist Joe Bradley (portrayed by Gregory Peck) who, along with photographer Irving Radovish (played by Eddie Albert) take Princess Ann or 'Smitty' around Rome to see the sights. While Princess Ann believes she has deceived them and is enjoying a normal holiday, Bradley is planning to publish his interview and Radovish is taking photographs of the Princess acting like a common person. However, this all goes wrong when she and Bradley fall in love. It's a charming, heart...

What the Romans did for us
Advantages: Innovative reconstructions, Good value for money
Disadvantages: Not open over winter
...Britannia, 122 AD.
?Those bloody Northerners are causing us problems again, Governor!? the Emperor Hadrian yelled. The Governor shuffled his feet. ?Well, we did send several thousand troops?? he managed, before the Emperor cut him off. ?Honestly, you would think they didn?t want to be subjugated under our civilising influence the way they behave! Right, that?s it! If they can?t co-operate with us, we are going to have to separate them!?. The Governor laughed nervously and replied, ?for a minute there, Sir, I was beginning to think you were going to suggest building a 73 mile wall across the entire breadth of the North to separate us Romans from the Barbarians?. ?Indeed I am!? said the Emperor, ?and make sure you stick in some heavily armoured forts at regular intervals along the way ? we don?t want anybody vandalising my wall, do...

The Roman Baths... in Bath
Advantages: Central location, Beautiful Architecture, Historically Interesting
Disadvantages: Ticket Price
...My fiancé and I recently visited Bath for a long weekend for our anniversary, and regardless of his views, my main priority was to visit the Roman Baths and most importantly, sample some of the famous Aquae Sulis water. So the moment that the sun came out (which unfortunately for us was not very often), we trundled from our hotel down to the museum.
Centrally located, and easy to find thanks to Bath's extremely good signage, the buildings incorporating the Roman Baths and Pump Rooms are obvious as you encounter them. The entrance to the museum and Pump Rooms is opulent, and reflects what I personally would have expected from the Romans with marble floors and high ceilings.
On entrance to the museum you are first expected to part with your hard earned cash. The ticket prices were £11.25 a head (which is the rate charged...

A Roman Private Detective???
Advantages: Good piece of historical fiction
Disadvantages: The first book in a series of 11 so there goes six months
...Introduction
~~~~~~~~
Roman Blood is the first book is Steven Saylor's acclaimed Sub Rosa series, which has been very popular in the US. (There are 11 books in the series although only five have to date been released in the UK) The books follow the exploits of Gordianus the Finder - a sort of Roman equivalent to a private detective. While this idea may sound silly to some (a roman private detective? what Sherlock Holmes or Sam Spade in a toga!!??) the concept does in fact work well within the political intrigues and double dealing of ancient Rome and its senate. Gordianus' skill and approach is not the conventional detective mantra of deductive reasoning but rather he has an intuitive ability to connect with people of all backgrounds and classes, to understand them at a deeper level than mere external observation would afford. Thus in...
No, you can't go into the Roman Bath....
Advantages: Near to Efe's and the city centre, with live music
Disadvantages: Well, its just a bit mingin!
...Well, I know all 11 of you who read my ops are going to be sad to hear it, but this is my final York Pubs opinion. Ah well, maybe I'll have to go on a few field trips to sort some new places to review ;)
The Roman Bath is located at the north end of Parliament Street in York. Walk north from the fountain (near HSBC), then you will find a square. The Roman Bath is on the left hand side of three pubs. The Crane is one of them...don't enter unless you want to arrange a contract killing.
The main attraction of the Roman Bath is surprisingly not the roman bath. Live music is on here most weekdays, and you tend to get middle aged blokes who are actually pretty good. Then again, some aren't. But at least its near Efe's, my favourite kebab van (I don't know why), so you can listen while you eat your donner meat and chips.
Its generally...
Friends, Romans Country men, conquer your fears
Advantages: learn about history; interactive displays
Disadvantages: cold, dark and gloomy; disabled access not available throughout
...NAME OF LOCATION: Deva Roman Experience, off Bridge Street, at Chester.
BACKGROUND: Whilst walking up Bridge Street on a weekend trip to Chester, my boyfriend Robert and I were trying to find the toy museum (we were following the pedestrian black signs but never found it), we saw an advertisement for the Deva Roman Experience, which had a cut-out of a roman soldier and some red leaflets on it. Curious, we stopped to pick one up and decided to visit this instead of the nonexistent toy museum.
ATTRACTIONS
Step onto a Roman Galley (ship), take a stroll through a reconstructed street of Chester, discover Roman, Saxon and Medieval remains in the on-site excavations, visit a hands-on room where there are activities for children and adults alike to try including trying on legionnaire's armour.
TRANSPORT
Have a Roman day out
Advantages: Real Roman site, can combine entrance fee with nearby museum
Disadvantages: expensive cafe
...Last year was the first of my annual days out for me and a couple of friends. We decided upon going to Vindolanda Roman fort, in Northumberland. Before going I researched & found they were linked to the Roman Army Museum about 10 miles west of the fort.
We went to the museum first. We saved a couple of pound by paying a joint entry fee for there & Vindolanda. Both are on the same road, the military road, which starts at Heddon on the Wall & finishes in Gisland. This runs pretty parralell with the A69. There is a seasonal bus which runs the length of the wall - AD122.
We reached Vidolanda, mid afternoon. I was pleased the parking was free. On entry we read the history how Vindolanda was a Roman fort, the south side of Hadrian's Wall, the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
I hadn't been for over 10 years when I went...
