Salisbury

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Comparing with their first album "Salisbury" was different.Uriah Heep make big step forward (artistically and musically),One can see song writing development. The album opened with fantastic hard-rock "Bird of prey" with lots of beautiful high notes from Byron. "The park" Written by Ken had beautiful harmony with unbelievable Byron's vocal.Good hard-rock "Time to live",and "Lady in Black"-legendary ballad ,re-released in 1977 earning the band Golden Lion award.Wonderfull "High priestess"."Salisbury" completes the work.It is really best collaboration between orchestra and rock band .This is really progressive 17-minutes epic, phenomenal opus with a twenty-seven piece brass section...

Salisbury's own Fawlty Towers?

Advantages: Right in the centre of Salisbury
Disadvantages: Woefully disorganised and in need of a full refurbishment

...With having a daughter living in the area we had received mixed opinions on the Mercure White Hart Hotel in Salisbury. Anyway, we decided one Sunday morning when in the area to go in and see what it was like. We had coffee and toasted teacakes in the Lounge area and we were pleased with the service we received so decided we would use this as our base for our holiday in early July. Unfortunately, our week at the Mercure White Hart did not reach the standards or expectations of a large city-centre three-star hotel I am writing on our observations of the week, 4 July to 11 July, when we stayed at the Mercure White Hart Hotel in Salisbury. Reception We arrived at the White Hart at approximately 4 pm on a Friday with our daughter. We were booked in for the whole week, while our daughter was booked in for three nights. We...

I like Salisbury

Advantages: Shopping, Cinema, Theatre, leisure centre, pubs, restaurants, parks, history.
Disadvantages: Traffic and parking.

...I have lived in Salisbury for the past seventeen years and despite being a bit of a nomad prior to that, I can't see that I'll ever want to move. For me, Salisbury is small enough to retain a community atmosphere and big enough to have all the essentials, chain stores, cinema, theatre, leisure centre etc. I recently hosted a visit by a friend I hadn't seen for some time and took them on a tour of the city. I suppose this was the first time for a long while that I had seen the city as visitors see it. What I found was a city centre with wonderful historic buildings, a vibrant outdoor market, a variety of large national stores and local specialist shops, plenty of retaurants and coffee houses, and any number of pubs to suit all tastes. Around the city there are lovely parks such as Elizabeth Gardens, the ancient monument of Old Sarum...

Salisbury (Not) Plain

Advantages: varied compositions, powerful playing, evocative cover
Disadvantages: overly strident, screeching vocal harmonies

..., "Salisbury" is also one of the most successful meldings of a Rock Band with strings and brass instruments. In his sleeve notes Hensley enthuses about the brass section "grooving unbelievably" and he's right. My main quibbles with the album lie with Gerry Bron's production, in particular with the sound of Keith Baker's drum-kit. He's mixed way too low, and his cymbals are a weak sizzle in the background when dramatic crashes are required. Those squealing vocals are also sometimes a bit too upfront for my ears but I suppose that I'm getting a bit old and past it! All in all, a highly successful album that chrystalised Heep's style and paved the way for their enormous European success....

Salisbury

Advantages: Historic
Disadvantages: traffic

...Salisbury is an historic town with a large Cathedral as the cetre of attention. The Cathedral used to be the tallest building in England at one stage. Also near by is Old Sarum (old name for Salisbury). It is suggested that an arrow was fired from old Sarum and where it landed they built the Cathedral ??? I dont see it really, the Cathedral is about 2 miles from Old Sarum. Also near by, nine miles away, is Stone Henge. I dont really need to explain to you about Stone Henge. We have all seen the rioting and trouble that happens every year aroud Summer Solstice time. Stupid really. Salisbury is about 23 miles from Southampton in the South of England. you might as well visit sometime....but dont come knocking !!!!1...

stunning salisbury

Advantages: clean safe touristy definitly not tacky
Disadvantages: very busy

...Salisbury is a truely beautiful city, clean and as safe as you can get in 2001. It has been my home town for a couple of years but still has that lovely holiday touristy feel every time i visit. The shopping is'nt great, it has all the high street names but in fun size versions, however, the shopper's paradise known as Southampton is only 20 odd miles away. Salisbury has an abundance of interesting buildings, museums,a breathtaking cathedrel, quaint coffee shops and a real upmarket air. The beautiful stately home Wilton house is only 2 miles away and well worth a visit, its garden centre and selection of factory shops including the famous Wilton carpet factory are a must. Of course no visit to the area is complete without a trip to Stonehenge.Head for the busy but delightful village of Amesbury 7 miles north of Salisbury and you...

View of Salisbury from a native

Advantages: shops, Nr New Forest, 60 mins drive from the sea
Disadvantages: One way system, traffic wardens, chalky water, Wilts & Dorset Buses

...Salisbury isn?t the original name for this part of England. The actual city began on a Bronze Age hill top called Serum (as the Normans called it), or Soverodonium as known by the Romans. In 1220 foundations for a new & better cathedral were laid, the actual building itself was finished in 1258. Salisbury cathedral was a catholic church under the name of St Mary?s until the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry 8th. I expect u have heard of the ledged of when an arrow was fired from Serum castle, where the arrow laded was where the new building would be. The foundations consist of faggots & bulrushes covered by 2ft of gravel, it has been known to flood badly because of the marshy conditions & there is a picture in Salisbury Museum of a boat being pushed round inside taken in 1913. We have the tallest spire in England...

Review of Cannon Salisbury

I knew thos earplugs would come in useful one day!

Advantages: Beautiful building, loads of facilities, near to the town centre
Disadvantages: Never know who you're sharing a room with!

...Well Mes Amis, I?m off on my travels again, not with Alan this time but sprog number 1, she?s just turned 13 and its half term so time for some of that parent bonding malarkey. Not for her the heady heights of Nottingham, but the sedate sights of Salisbury. Nor for her a weekend in the Hilton Hotel but a couple of nights in the local Youth Hostel. I?m not stingy but £14.90 for me, and £11/60 per night totalling £53.00 and including breakfast was far better than the £100 I would have had to pay for other B&B?s in the city. So what?s the Youth Hostel Association? Simply it was an organisation set up for travellers to gain a good nights sleep at a great price. Primarily it was aimed at student and other people travelling around the UK. It was luxurious but simple basics. Nut now its grown and grown and grown, there are over 80 in the UK...

Review of YHA (Salisbury )

Like a pilgrim

Advantages: Beauty, history, magnificence
Disadvantages: ~

...I come to Salisbury Cathedral not just as an outsider (a non-Christian), but also from outside. Not deposited by coach at the Close gate as a tourist, but rather walking from my hostel bed, through the countryside, approaching slowly - so much more like a pilgrim. My first views are from across the water meadows. I've braved the desolation of an industrial estate in weekend shut-down, eerie in its silence, and gained the banks of the Nadder. Named for the serpent, perhaps, the river is benign. Slow. Unremarkable. The banks are full of bindweed bells, and dancing dragons, and tall stands of the elsewhere rare marsh orchid. Beyond the water: the wetlands - the last remnants of the marsh that predates the city. Across the meadow stands the church: her corporeal silhouette low, and short, and almost hidden. Above rises the spire...
