THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957) [FILM ONLY REVIEW]
Review of The Seventh Seal DVD by
Charles_Strickland
Advantages: Thought provoking, breathtaking visuals, masterful acting, philosophical but accessible
Disadvantages: None
...Ingmar Bergman's Det Sjunde Inseglet (THE SEVENTH SEAL) was released in 1957 and would confirm the filmmaker's genius with this his masterful and thought-provoking questioning of whether God exists.
During the 14th century a disillusioned knight returns home from years of war to find his country immersed in the chaos of a plague, people strewn around the countryside, their eyes gauged out, witch-hunts a daily occurrence and blood and gore now part of the grim landscape. Confronted with such death following the war he's faced to question his own moral and religious purpose in life when he's visited by a ghost of a man cloaked in a long dark robe, truly frightening, who claims to be Death and who tells him his time is up. The knight, however, challenges Death, inviting him to a game of chess on the agreement that if he wins he...

A beautiful illustration of the emptiness of faith
Review of The Seventh Seal DVD by
gantzgraf
Advantages: Everything about this film is an advantage!
Disadvantages: NONE.
...(no lifting, similarities are coincidental, past experience in reviewing)
Det Sjunde Inseglet: The Seventh Seal is one of Bergman's most celebrated works, but as with all great filmakers I refuse to call it his "best" film. Is that supposed to mean that Wild Strawberries (1957), The Silence (1963) and Persona (1966) are inferior? Of course not; it is ONE of his best works.
If you take a closer look at the themes throughout Bergman's filmography you will notice that there is a progressive detachment from religious faith. His father was one of those orthodox belt-wielding nut-cases that seemed to paint the integral part of the Swedish conservative society back then...well, most of it in any case. Locked in umbearably small closets by his father, the young Bergman experienced all the animosity and utter stupidity of religious dogma...

Seventh Heaven (and Hell)!
Review of Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son [Remastered] [ECD] - Iron Maiden by
tonguelessghostofsin
Advantages: One of the best metal concept albums ever
Disadvantages: Doesn't really have a proper 'ending'
...This is it! Iron Maiden's potential for a flawless and original metal album was long known, but they had never quite managed to make every track original and hook-laden and powerful. This was it!
Being very knowing souls, especially Harris, there was a thought that as this was Maiden's seventh studio album, maybe they should play on that. Harris was a big fan of some 70's prog-rock bands, who's liking for 'concept' albums was well-documented and proved.
After 'Somewhere in Time' and the corresponding 'Somewhere on Tour', Harris was said to have indulged in much mythology and legend, reading about the 'seventh son born of a seventh son' who would be blessed with the gift of second sight, i.e. clairvoyancy.
Iron Maiden had the same line-up for the fourth album in a row, and sadly this was the last time they would be together as five...

Seventh time lucky
Review of Seventh Sojourn - Moody Blues (The) by
Newfloridian
Advantages: Brilliant, typically Moody's sounds
Disadvantages: A bit short by current standards
...This was the last studio album produced by the Moody Blues before they went into their six year exile of the mid 1970s. It is a surprisingly well rounded disc that has almost none of the psychedelic influences of previous offerings. It is a collection of individual songs (albeit written singly and in collaboration by all members of the group) rather than a themed album. It also contained two of the most distinctive of the Moody’s tracks. The content reflects the mature Moody Blues sound: gentle ballads alternating with driving ballads; rock guitars and synthesisers alternating with quasi-classical strings; lyrics that conjure up every human emotion. Given this, ‘Seventh Sojourn’ as an whole looks forward to the future albums of the 80s and 90s (despite the exile period and the changes in line up) rather than backwards to group’s origins...

Seal Sanctuary, Gweek, Cornwall
Review of National Seal Sanctuary, Gweek by
Susanimber
Advantages: Tesco vouchers can be used, somewhere different to go
Disadvantages: Long queues in the school holidays
...We went to the Seal Sanctuary at the end of July 2007 with our 3 children. I would advise going early, we got there when it opened at 10.00am, and there were only 2 other families waiting, when we came out, there was a queue as far as up the hill to the car park at least an hour wait to get in, and staff were handing out lollipops to children, the one disadvantage here is that there only seems to be one member of staff taking money when you arrive he then has to hand out leaflets and tell you information, they are currently giving each child a shark top trump card and if your card matches the one in the shop you get a free pack of shark cards, this all takes time hence the queue when we came out.
We used Tesco vouchers which made it very reasonable it would have cost nearly £40.00 but only had to use £10.00 of vouchers, the current...

Gweek Seal Sanctuary - great place to go
Review of National Seal Sanctuary, Gweek by
Tussie69
Advantages: Interesting, informative, lovely seals, refreshments, lovely location, good access for people with mobility problems
Disadvantages: Not sure if can access by us/train, maybe a little pricey for families, can get crowded
...We go to the seal sanctuary every time we go down to Cornwall and even when we go to Dorset and Devon! (which is once a year!)
Parking is free and is right near the entrance. I can not remember the exact price as every year we have been able to get a 2 for 1 ticket. I think though we paid around £6.50 last September. I think this is quite pricey but it is a charity and it is a lovely day out. If you look around for leaflets where ever you go you should find a 2 for 1 token.
Once you have paid there is a downhill walk to the seals but there is a landrover train that can take you down and bring you back for no extra charge. The drive down is through the woods and you get a lovely view down into the sanctuary and then beyond to the wooded river/lake. It is only a short ride and you are dropped off between the pools where the seals...

National Seal Sanctuary
Review of National Seal Sanctuary, Gweek by
LucyFan
Advantages: Informative and fun
Disadvantages: Doesn't appear to be accessable by bus or train?
...The Sanctuary was started in 1958 by Ken Jones when a baby seal, only a few hours old, was washed up on the beach at St Agnes. For many years it was based in St Agnes but as news of it's good work spread the amount of animals it received increased and in 1975 it re-located to Geek.
Today the Sanctuary has Nursery pools, Convalescence, and Resident pools, and a specially designed Hospital. The hospital over the years has been extended to include isolation pools, as well as treatment and preparation areas.
They have rescued many seals over the years, and most are well enough to be released back into the wild after treatment, but some seals, for various reasons, would not survive back in the wild, so they have them as their guests at the Sanctuary.
In addition to the Grey and Common Seals, they have Californian and Patagonian Sea...

Certainly Worth Sounding The Seventh Trumpet For
Review of Sounding The Seventh Trumpet - Avenged Sevenfold by
UniqueRobbo
Advantages: Great song writing, some great riffs
Disadvantages: Weak singing vocals
...I thought I'd try out Avenged Sevenfold following the release of their latest album 'City of Evil'. After several months of pin up posters depicting the band riding motorbikes whilst holding various lead pipes and chains, endless articles in rock and metal magazines on the band's success, and A7x hoodies popping up everywhere in the town centres, I thought I'd give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. So how lucky I was when a mate gave me 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet', saying that he 'didn't like the awful screaming'.
Since that joyous moment I have bought their latest release also, and can safely say that 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' is much better.
Firstly, this album boasts some fantastic song writing skills. Although not matching some of the top metal bands, A7x have certainly a large amount of talent to offer...

Seventh Trip
Review of Seventh Trip - Kroke by
dangaroo
Advantages: Jazz Klezmer mix works well
Disadvantages: Some fairly unmemorable tracks
...racks
Kroke which means Krakow in Yiddish are a four piece band from Krakow that play mostly Klezmer music but also some Sephardic stuff. Seventh Trip is their most recent album (8th album) and was released by Oriente in 2007. The album is not at all bad but it's nowhere near as good as their 2000 release - The Sounds of the Vanishing World. That album was more traditional than this one which attempts to fuse jazz and even rock in to the tracks, it's the kind of album that grows on you.
The album starts off with an arabic feeling with a bit of rock thrown in with the track Awakening before moving on to Papillon which is a very busy track, lots going on, then on to Canon which is pure Klezmer music before disappearing a bit for a few tracks which are a bit slow and depressing before coming back with some more jazzy tracks...

Seal in good form
Review of System - Seal by
atytyut2434
Advantages: Usual seal fare
Disadvantages: few are a bit long?
...Seal. He shot to fame giving his lyrical style to Adamski's "Killer" all the way back in the early 90's and it's good that he is still going strong more than a decade later.
System is his latest album that fans had eagerly awaited after the last album failed to get off the ground in the early stages of recording.
Just because he hasn't been recording soesn't mean that Seal hasn't been writing. His music and lyric writing is still as strong as ever and that applies just as equally to his brilliant voice.
So whats on the album?
If its in my mind, its on my face. Good title and good song. It'll remind you of his previous stuff and its just as good as anything he's done before.
Amazing (thin White Duke edit). this is a remix of the track that was released as the 1st single off this album. to be honest i don't much care...
