The THING !!

Advantages: Very Scary and Bloody
Disadvantages: Nothing

...The THING. Let me start by saying that if Kurt Russell had not been in this movie it probably would have been a so-so film. However he lifts the whole film, in my opinion. The film is based on the novel by John W Campbell Jnr and is a remake of the original black and white movie made in 1951 called The Thing from Another World. An American research team are in the Antarctic when one day there world is turned upside down. Firstly with some crazed Norwegian in a helicopter trying to shoot dead a poor running dog and then later when things start happening around the base. The dog it seems is not a dog and soon some of the scientists are not human at all. It seems there is a malevolent alien parasitic organism that has been discovered and then released by the Norwegians and it can take the form of any living thing...

A Guy Thing

Advantages: Silly rom com with elements of hilarity
Disadvantages: Standard plot, storyline and characters which we've all seen before

...PLOT - Anyway, Paul (Jason Lee - My Name is Earl) is due to marry his sweetheart Karen (Selma Blair - Cruel Intentions). Pretty straightforward! Unfortunately at his batchelor party he gets a little worse for where and ends up in bed with Becky (Julia Stiles - Save the last Dance). As he does the manly thing and try to get away with it he is hit with the bombshell that not only does he have an std but Becky is Karen's cousin. Bugger i hear all you men say!! No escape surely but the comedy unravels as wedding preperations are made and Paul's lies just keep getting worse as he falls deeper into a hole he can hardly struggle out of. PERFORMANCES - At the time Jason Lee's stock was rising after appearing in such films as Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous, Heartbreakers and multiple Kevin Smith films. His wit and comedy is there in bits but...

The Thing

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...I'm not going to talk about how great the transfer is, or how informative the "making-of" segment is. They're what we expect from DVD, and praising them would be like praising a car because its wheels are round. I'm here to talk about the film.John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It is a masterpiece of paranoia and dread. The special effects are second to none, and still look convincing in this age of CGI.Better yet, they are unpredictable and imaginative. The acting is spot-on by a group of underrated character actors led by the perrenially underrated Kurt Russell. The screenplay is tight, well-plotted and suspenseful. We learn just enough about each of the characters to make us feel as if we know them. Its ending is logical and appropriate for the plot points that lead up to it.The cinematography is...

SomeTHING is after you !

Advantages: Very good film.
Disadvantages: None

...The THING ! **************** ~Introduction~ ****************** This is john carpenters remake of the 1950's classic, but is actually very close to the original, "the thing from outer space", which was also taken from or at least greatly shaped by the novella "who goes there?" By john w Campbell jnr. ~The Movie~ *************** A research team in a desolate and isolated Antarctic research station find an alien creature which has been buried in the ice for an estimated 100,000 years. Needless to say when it accidentally defrosts all hell is let loose on the poor researchers. They now have to fight for their lives against a foe the like of which they can barely comprehend. The creature can turn into anything or anyone. It can split itself into many parts and is devilishly hard to kill. Paranoia sets in as the remaining...

Wild Thing!

Advantages: Classic book.
Disadvantages: Expensive.

...Being keen to start building up a library of books for my son from an early age, I turned to some of the classics I enjoyed as a child (probably more for my own gratification than anything else!). This in turn got my husband reminiscing - the most outstanding being, in his opinion, 'Where The Wild Things Are'. Personally, I had never encountered this book. (Where have you been I hear you cry!). My husband is American, so I put it down to the fact that it must have been more popular across the pond, where indeed it was first released over 40 years ago. I bought the book anyway, keen to see what all the fuss was about! I bought the hardback version, which is a large oblong book. The pages have very little writing - perhaps only a line or two, & the writing is large so that children can read it easily. The main thing about...

A woman's view of A Guy Thing

Advantages: I liked Jason Lee
Disadvantages: Morally a bit up the creek, silly

...Paul Morse is about to get married to girlfriend Karen Cooper, because he is determined to do the right thing by her rather than because he loves her. He has every intention of behaving himself on his stag night, so is rather taken aback to wake up the next day with a woman in his bed. Even worse, his mother-in-law to be calls to say that Karen is on her way. However, he manages to get rid of the evidence, and all seems to be getting back to normal when he goes to a family party and realises that the woman in his bed is actually Karen's cousin, Becky. Can he keep his relationship with Becky quiet? Or is it a sign that his relationship with Karen shouldn't be ending in marriage? I knew I recognised Jason Lee, who plays Paul, but couldn't place him until I looked him up on imdb.com - he is, of course, Earl of My Name is Earl fame, yet...

The Sweetest Thing - Unpalatable Mess

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: You'll never get those 88 minutes back

...Directed by Roger Kumbel, The Sweetest Thing stars Cameron Diaz as Christine, a 28 year-old commitment-phobe, and Christina Applegate and Selma Blair as her best friends Courtney and Jane. Apparently, screenwriter Nancy Pimental based the main characters on herself and her best friend, the actress Kate Walsh (you may know her as Dr Addison Montgomery on Grey's anatomy and Private Practice). I went to see this film when it was released in 2002, thinking it would be a lighthearted comedy perfect for a lazy afternoon. As it turned out, although certainly lighthearted, it was sadly lacking in the comedy department. The film opens with a series of men telling us (the audience) about Christine Walters. These are her disgruntled ex-suiters, who complain that she's a "player", doesn't want anything serious, said...

Trust is a tough thing to come by these days

Advantages: A masterpiece of blood-curdling horror!!
Disadvantages: Not for the young or the toothless!

...THE THING In 1982 a thing from another world enthralled a new generation of cinema-goer. Kids of all ages were horrified as a little bugger known only as E.T. fell into a river and turned grey. Amongst a cinema auditorium filled with emotional little rascals, responsible parents should have placated their sobbing siblings with extra large bags of jelly babies and all-sorts, ensuring them that Spielberg’s marvellous alien creation would manage to return home by the end credits; but responsible parents were pre-occupied elsewhere. For in the auditorium across the corridor, away from the sobs of booing little children, there could be heard the shrieking screams of lingering terror. Parents were cringing at John Carpenter’s The Thing as it revealed itself in a concoction of immense gore, shocking mutilation and unbearable...

Wild Thing - I think I love you...

Advantages: Simple yet powerful story, beautifully told through rich illustrations and poetic narrative
Disadvantages: Possibly scary for very young or sensitive children?

...Where the Wild Things Are - by Maurice Sendak A boy called Max Max is an ordinary, mischievous young boy who possess an extraordinary imagination. One night Max, adorned in his favourite wolf suit, is causing his usual mayhem, much to the displeasure of his pet terrier, and his mother, who calls him a ?Wild thing!?. Max, instead of denying the charge and protesting his innocence, threatens to ?eat her up? ? at which point he is sent to bed without any supper. Alone in his room Max?s imagination takes over, and bit by bit a forest starts to grow, creeping up the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Soon a sea rolls past with a boat to take Max away, and so he sails off, ?through night and day, in and out of weeks and almost over a year to where the Wild Things are?. When Max arrives at the shore of this strange...
