Warwick Uni - a guide
Review of Warwick University by  hooves

Advantages: Too many too mention
Disadvantages: Very few in my opinion

...I thought, considering many people will soon either be heading to Warwick Uni, or seriously starting to look around for a years time, i would give a guide to the life you can expect when/if you join me there. Firstly, Warwick University is located just outside Coventry, and strangely enough, about a 30 minute drive away from Warwick. It is very central, think Birmingham and you would not be far off. I wont bore you with any of the academic statistics, as there are far too many and most are easily accesible from other sources (ie the Warwick Uni website). One important figure is that the university has a student population of around 18,000, so you are in quite some gathering of intellectuals. Firstly, the most important building in terms of social life, the Student's Union. This is exactly what it says, it is run by students... Read review

Warwick is the best
Review of Warwick University by  shadia

Advantages: its the 5th best uni at the moment
Disadvantages: Its in Coventry.

...Ive just graduated from Warwick in July 2003 after completing a degree in Sociology. There is a lot of competition for places at Warwick and it seems as though everyone you meet applied for Oxford or Cambridge and didnt get in. I wasn't one of them people however but I was so pleased to be offered a place there. There are roughly 16,000 students there but it really doesn't seem like it. Warwick also has the reputation for one of the biggest campuses in Europe. I started in October 2000 and this uni starts a bit later than most and every academic year finishes at the end of June. Holidays are great, for Christmas we normally get a month off and for Easter it is normally 5 weeks of holidays. There are three terms a year, which are broken up into ten weeks so it makes it really easy to manage stuff in this time as you can time... Read review

Let The Good Times Roll.....
Review of Warwick University by  Jamesyboy

Advantages: Everything!!!
Disadvantages: Apart from the commercialism!!!

...My three years at the University Of Warwick were great - there was the obvious pyscho-partner issues, and the tension created by pulling numerous housemates, but on the whole it was a really wonderful time. Well, it's located near Stoneleigh, which is near Coventry, and therefore in the West Midlands. It was built in the 60s, and is therefore a mix of a modern Uni, and a red-brick one. The place is getting bigger each year, with constant building programmes, and millions of pounds of investment, so it certainly isn't resting on its reputation - in the time I was there, a new Union was built, a new pavilion, and numerous lecture theatres, which were all very posh!! The first thing you will notice when you drive into Warwick Uni, is the sheer scale of the place - it has a very large campus, with lakes, and woods and acres of well... Read review

No regrets
Review of Warwick University by  dance

Advantages: Too many to list here
Disadvantages: None

...After being here in Warwick University for a few years, I would like to share my experiences with others and hopefully will help you make a decision if you are going to university. Warwick University is always one of the Top 10 universities in UK. It is a relatively new university (just celebrated its 40 years anniversary in year 2005) but most courses and lecturers are of high standard. However, there are very limited courses on offer so it is not a university for everyone. I am going to focus on the non-academic side in this review since you are able to get most information about the courses from the warwick website or brochures. The university accommodation maintains a very high standard because during vacations, the student accommodation is turned into a conference park. In order to make money from the conference park... Popular for so many reasons
Review of Warwick University by  stuartcorey

Advantages: Great Union, societies, courses, facilities ... everything really
Disadvantages: You have to put Coventry in your address

...I am about to go back to Warwick for my 4th and final year at the place, after spending a year working in Brussels as part of my Politics with French course, and to be honest I can't wait! Obviously this opinion will be influenced by the fact that, knowing my luck, the Vice Chancellor will turn out to be a Ciao member who scours the opinions on Universities for any anti-Warwick material, but fortunately there's not really anything bad to mention. To get onto the courses at Warwick there is always pretty stiff competition, but that does mean that once you get there, everyone shares an interest in your subject and you can be sure of some interesting seminars. After choosing Politics, I always thought that there was the risk of ending up with a bunch of boring old farts taking lectures and schoolmaster-like tutors taking seminars. But... Read review

Music music music
Review of Warwick University by  gshegog

Advantages: Music, Events, Leamington
Disadvantages: Coventry and er... Coventry

...Warwick is great. Despite the fact that I left after 2 years, I would recommend Warwick university to anybody. However, I think the quality and consistency of courses varies like you wouldn't believe and some courses are not right for certain people, but that is the case for all universities. I would, however, make sure you know exactly what your course entails before you start. The first year at Warwick is great. There is always something going on at the union and someone is always having a party. Monday night = Top Banana (full on cheese, bit of a meat market, but always good for a laugh), Tuesday night = society night (drum n bass, brass bands, hip hop, anything you like really), Wednesday = Decadance (80s), Thursday = Mojo(Drum n Bass, Hip Hop, Funk), Friday = (Charts, Handbag House), Saturday = Quench (used to be called... The best decision I ever made
Review of Warwick University by  kimbahop

Advantages: Respected uni, close knit community, FUN FUN FUN
Disadvantages: Bubble atmosphere

...with the place. It was modern yet traditional and had gorgeous buildings and the aformentioned lakes and trees (along with lots and lots of squirrels). The fact that it ranks amongst the top ten universities every single year despite being only 30 years old was also a big draw of course. So I put it as my first choice, got my offer, sat my A Levels, and the rest is history! That is the story of how I came to be here in the first place. I have now spent my first term here and whilst ten weeks may not sound like a very long time to form a real opinion of the place I can assure you that the bubble is such an intensive environment, I feel like I have been there for years already. Of course no open day can tell you what it is really going to be like, so here are my experiences of Warwick university so far... THE COURSE My course is biological... Read review

Definitely not for me
Review of Warwick University (Faculties) - Maths by  LouisaNott

Advantages: Nice looking department
Disadvantages: Too many to put here, read the article

...After applying to, and being offered a place at Oxford University to read mathematics, I decided, on balance, that Warwick University maths department was better, so off I went. Everyone speaks highly of Warwick, it is, supposedly "the best maths department in the UK", and you will be hard pushed to find someone who doesn't think this. I do. I spent a very unhappy year at Warwick doing maths, and then changed course, and am a lot happier. The department itself is situated on a hill about 15 minutes walk from the University, which already separates the "mathematicians" from the rest of campus. The actual department looks quite pleasant, sort of average standard compared with the other departments I visited. Appearance isn't everything. Whilst I found the lectures to be well organised, the lecturers were confusing, arrogant... Read review

The Pain Au Chocolat Palace
Review of Scarman House (University of Warwick, Coventry) by  zoe_page

Advantages: Nice, peaceful location, with pastries around the clock
Disadvantages: A "no shorts in the hotel" rule, but also no changing rooms at the gym

...Another week, another assessment centre, and I found myself overnighting at one of the University of Warwick's conference hotels, Scarman House. After a worrying journey, with a delayed train followed by a frightfully inept taxi driver who insisted on dropping me at the other side of campus, I was rushing to get there on time, so didn't have much time to absorb the surroundings. On arrival I was met by a member of the organisation involved, and told there was no time to check in, so dumped my bags in the left luggage room behind reception. Being a conference hotel they are flexible with check in times, and accept new delegates from 9am onwards with prior arrangement. I checked in at 5.30pm, when the afternoon's exercises had finished, and was directed to my room on the 2nd floor. The rooms, of which there are 200, are all en suite... Read review

Fun fun fun
Review of Warwick University by  PetiteLibertine

Advantages: Excellent atmosphere, Student's Union, great people, good variety
Disadvantages: It's nowhere near Warwick!

...Well I guess anyone writing about their own university is going to rave on about how great it is - despite how diplomatic and open minded students are supposed to be, we're the worst for rivalry and patriotism! So, it comes as no surprise that I'm writing another great review for Warwick, my home for the past three years. There are three campuses at Warwick, Westwood, Gibbet Hill and Main Campus, all within about ten-fifteen minutes walk of each other. Main Campus is where its at - this is where you'll find most of the faculty departments, the library, the computer rooms, shops, Warwick Arts Centre (with cinema, theatre, art gallery and posh eatery) and of course the Student's Union. Now the Union has been up and down during my time at Warwick. As far as ents are concerned, I don't think they can be faulted, especially this last year... Read review
