A four sided obelisk reminds us of those who sacrificed their lives during Second World War. Every fourth Belarus died during the war. Each side of the obelisk symbolises different things: 1 symbolises war front, the other one defence, 3rd symbolises underground movements and finally the 4th one symbolises partisans (partisan is basically a civilian fighting on his own initiative, and in Belarus they were significant force against Germans. Usually Partisans were either too old or young to join the army, so they fought on their own) This obelisk with built in the victory Square on the 4th of July 1954 to commemorate 10 years of freedom from fascist occupation. ...Finally a victory for the mighty Hammers. About time too lads I have to say. And it was a good victory also. It may not sound convincing, a 1-0 away win at Walsall in the first leg of the second round of the Worthington cup, but it is a great result. Take in mind that Walsall are top of Division 2, in great form and they were at home. Add the awful weather conditions, constant downfall of rain making the pitch mighty slippery. Then take in the fact that not 1 of West Ham’s 4 forwards were playing. No Di Canio, no Suker, no Kanoute and no Kitson. So up front goes Joe Cole and the mighty Trevor Sinclair. First appearances for Marc Keller and Steve Potts, no Lampard, no Moncur, no Basillia, no Margas, no Minto, no Charles. It was here that I discovered that there would be a new Divine Comedy album released the following Monday. To be called Victory For The Comic Muse (presumably a nod to the band's first ever release, the deleted and extremely rare Fanfare For The Comic Muse), it was to be released both as a CD, and as a double pack with a bonus dvd. Now, after the disappointment of Absent Friends, it was with a cautious optimism that I purchased the disc (the version with the dvd wasn't going to arrive in Virgin for a couple of days, and I have a first day purchasing tradition to keep up!). ...I am continuously stunned by the depth of the Ciao catalogue at the moment....and pleased that I can introduce more bands that no one will have heard of into people's lives, even if for a short minute or so... I have been to gigs that start in such a way that I have stood in awe; my jaw-dropped to terra firma as the early notes ring out across the venue. Far be it from a physical disability that might otherwise leave my chin as a mere remnant on my face but the start to A Small Victory's El Camino has just that very same effect on me, so much so that it has warranted replay ever since its arrival, albeit restricted to those rooms that have been thoughtfully carpeted for such an occasion.
