To The Ends of the Earth (and beyond?)
Review of The voyage of the Dawn Treader - C.S. Lewis by
CaptainDisaster
Advantages: Lewis is on top form here...
Disadvantages: ... none whatsoever.
...The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is (according to C.S.Lewis' recommended reading order) the fifth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. (The sequence goes 1- The Magician's Nephew, 2-The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, 3-The Horse and his Boy, 4-Prince Caspian.) It features Edmund and Lucy from the 2nd and 4th books in that sequence, along with a new child from our earth. The opening line of this book, which introduces the new character, is wonderful: "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." All of the books in the Narnia series have a moral message, and usually involve at least one of the children having to learn an important lesson along the way to becoming a lot nicer - from that opening line you will guess which one it is in this book! (His character is summed up in the third paragraph...

A magical journey to the utter east
Review of The voyage of the Dawn Treader - C.S. Lewis by
lobourse
Advantages: Lots of entertaining and thought-provoking episodes
Disadvantages: Might seem too bitty or possibly preachy
...The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the second of the seven books which make up the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and picks up from Prince Caspian. It tells the story of the last visit to Narnia of Edmund and Lucy, this time taking with them their cousin, Eustace.
PLOT SUMMARY
Edmund and Lucy are condemned to spend their summer holidays with their odious cousin, Eustace Clarence Scrubb. Eustace’s parents are devotees of all the latest trendy fads, and he shows nothing but contempt for his old-fashioned cousins, especially for their make-believe world where they were royalty. One day he is teasing them again, when the picture of a ship on the high seas suddenly comes to life. The children are dragged through the picture into the sea, from where they are pulled out, and taken on board the Dawn Treader, the ship of King Caspian...

"Drinkable Light"
Review of The voyage of the Dawn Treader - C.S. Lewis by
jillmurphy
Advantages: Crisp writing, exciting adventure, it'll make you cry!
Disadvantages: If you cry, the pages crinkle. Um... some may dislike the religious allegory.
..."There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it. His parents called him Eustace Clarence and his masters called him Scrubb. I can't tell you how his friends spoke to him, for he had none. He didn't call his Father and Mother "Father" and "Mother", but Harold and Alberta. They were very up-to-date and advanced people. They were vegetarians, non-smokers and teetotallers and wore a special kind of underclothes. In their house there was very little furniture and very few clothes on beds and the windows were always open."
Ha! Written fifty years ago, the opening words of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, one of C S Lewis' Narnian books, are both anachronistic and contemporary. We don't say "masters" now, but "teachers" or "father" and "mother", but "mum" and "dad". This is the boarding-school jargon...

Lewis on top form again
Review of The Silver Chair - C.S. Lewis by
CaptainDisaster
Advantages: Funny, insightful, witty, great characters, fun storyline.
Disadvantages: Nothing really.
...The Silver Chair is the penultimate book in the Chronicles of Narnia series by C S Lewis. It also happens to be (after much internal deliberation) my favourite of the series, beating "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" by a hair's breadth)...
As in all but one of the previous novels, The Silver Chair involves some children being plucked out of our world and into the realm of Narnia, a place similar to our own but with the addition of talking beasts and certain mythological figures (such as Dryads, Fauns, Centaurs and the like). It is ruled by a King who acts on behalf of Aslan, the great lion who just happens to have also created the world of Narnia. He is always interested in the events of Narnia but does not always directly intervene - and sometimes he chooses children from our world (always referred to as "Son of Adam" and "Daughter...

The Horse And His Boy - What A Ride!
Review of The Horse and his Boy - C.S. Lewis by
hypnoticstate
Advantages: A great addition to the Chronicles of Narnia!
Disadvantages: Less of the story is spent actually IN Narnia but the story is very griping!
...The Horse And His Boy is, chronologically, the third book in C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles Of Narnia". The chronicles as a whole are something that i'm growing to love. During my childhood, i watched the BBC dramatisations of "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe", "Prince Caspian And The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader" and "The Silver Chair". To this day they still bring back strong feelings of nostalgia (and i've recently bought them on DVD, can't wait to watch them). I also had the full set of books as a child (they were originally my mothers) but i never read them. I wasn't the reading type back then (how that's changed!) Then, in 2005, Disney brought out "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" movie and, again, those feelings of nostalgia resurfaced. That was in 2005. By December 2006, the DVD was out and i watched it again and still loved...

Advantages: Characters are so real, scenery is beautiful, captivates!

Nania..The Other World..
Review of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis by
sweetchoc05
Advantages: Great story, Delightful Characters, Clear Story, Great book for kids
Disadvantages: None!!
...Name of Book: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, The Chronicles of Narnia, part 2.
Name of Author: C.S. Lewis
Category: Fantasy
Many people hate fantasy stories since they feel that it lacks imagination. They seem to have a weird feeling that a fantasy writer doesn't think about what he's writing - he just begins with a line and lets the story go as it does without any limits in sight. But, in my opinion, it is these fantasy stories which require more thought as well as imagination. It is very easy to write about a fight between men in London or New York. But think about a fight between a talking Lion and an evil Witch in a land where it's always winter but never Christmas. Easy, is it? I don't think so.
Narnia, if you don't know, is one of the other worlds that exist along with our own earth. Created by Aslan, the Lion...

Must read now! The Chronicles of Narnia.
Review of Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis by
joshyh
Advantages: It being the complete story - fantasy, romance, religion, philosophy, thrills & action are always to be found!
Disadvantages: Depends on how determined you are - it is easy to get bogged down.
...If 1000words make a picture, 7 books full of words make a masterpiece as is shown by C.S. Lewis's creation of the world and history of Narnia.
Anyone who has not read these books had better have a good excuse! They should definitely be on the reading list for every school worldwide because they tell a perfect story - although, of course, I did feel a little embarassed reading them at school so if these are a present for a child, you might want to look into buying a series with slightly snazier covers than mine!
Here is a list of the books in order with a taste of what they give:
The Magician's Nephew - The start of the adventure and we witness the birth of a seemingly perfect world - Narnia. We have our first sighting of the mysterious Aslan and striaght away we can see the religious underlying of these books. I wouldn't say...
