In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought highly praised performances from leading contemporary actors - HENRY VI PART TWO [1983] As Henry's marriage to Margaret cedes the last of his father's French gains, the presence of a weak king encourages dissent. Feuds rage between Gloucester and Beaufort and between York's faction and the other lords until York sets up Jack Cade to lead a popular revolt. This 'repertory cast' performance continues Shakespeare's ambitious ' War of teh Roses' trilogy. By using actors in multiple roles, director Jane Howell highlights the similarities and contrasts between various characters throughout the story. ... less

10.3.11The Battle of Towton 1461 was unique in its ferocity and brutality, as the armies of two kings of England engaged with murderous weaponry and in appalling conditions to conclude the first War of the Roses. Variously described as the largest, longest and bloodiest battle on English soil, Towton was fought with little chance of escape and none of surrender. Yet, as if too ghastly to contemplate, the battle itself and the turbulent reign of Henry VI were neglected for centuries. ... less

Shakespeare's Kings - John Julius Norwich

If Shakespeare's complicated portrayal of the teeming womb of royal kings (Richard II) of England in his history plays has always confused you, then John Julius Norwich's Shakespeare's Kings is one solution to your problems. Recalling watching Henry IV as a young boy, Norwich remembers asking, where did history stop and drama begin? It is this question that Shakespeare's Kings seeks to answer, as it chronicles the historical events of the reigns of the monarchs of England dramatised in Shakespeare's plays. Beginning with Edward III, Norwich details the turbulent reign of Richard II, the rise of Henry IV and the triumphs of Henry V, the disastrous reign of Henry VI, the Wars of the Roses, the evil of Richard III and the painful birth of the Tudor monarchy. Norwich sheds interesting light on what Shakespeare did with his sources (particularly Holinshed), as he provides chapters that detail the history of a particular monarch, which is then tested against Shakespeare's play of that particular king. This throws up some interesting points, such as the fact that the great nationalist John of Gaunt in Richard II was actually a deeply unpopular, patrician figure. The book also contains some wonderful illustrations and excellent tables of family trees, maps and an appendix that offers the entirety of Edward III, only recently (and still controversially) accepted into the canon by Shakespeare scholars. However, the general reader should also treat Norwich's claim to historical objectivity with some caution. Shakespeare's Kings is almost completely ignorant of recent critical and historical studies of either Shakespeare or historical studies of the monarchs under consideration. Norwich claims that Shakespeare would never have claimed historical accuracy--and to establish just how close to it he came has been one of the principal purposes of this book--but then he was not an historian; he was a dramatist. But this obscures the extent to which history and fiction are invariably entwined and nowhere more so than in Shakespeare. But there's the rub. --Jerry Brotton ... less

All about Henry!
Advantages: Summary: A good vacuum cleaner at a fair price
Disadvantages: Dust bags need replacing from time to time
...~All about Henry~
I have owned a number of vacuum cleaners over the years and the only brand that I have ever been tempted to buy from again is Numatic. I bought my first "Henry" a good few years ago when they were sold with a simple one speed suction option, that was enough to lift fitted carpets from the floors if the filter bag was newly fitted and the air intake closure on the hose...

Call for HENRY!
Advantages: Powerful suction.Virtually unbreakable.strong.
Disadvantages: Heavy to carry for those with mobility problems
...-operated by your foot (without bending) One for carpets/delicate tasselled rugs, and another for bare floors, handy for safeguarding against snags on your thick pile best carpets or glide along smooth wooden floors without scratching.
Henry weighs just under 6 kilos.
I was annoyed that the material bags come as an ?additional? extra.
I mean how can they say bags are an option? These come in packs...

Full-blown war
Advantages: Black humour, good acting
Disadvantages: Potential cruelty to animals
...You would be forgiven for thinking that this film is a historical drama, but it is far from that, although it is definitely a War of sorts. I'm old enough to remember when this came out in the 1980s, but it wasn't until this century that I actually got to see it. As is the case with many 80s films, it is dated, particularly with regard to clothes and hairstyles, but it is still an enjoyable film...
