Diamond review  Laughing all the way to the butt

Advantages: good for plants; good for the environment
Disadvantages: expensive outlay; some look rather plain

...all the major jobs like new fencing and patio laying had been done, I was faced with a blank canvas. One of the first items I decided to buy, before any new plants, was a water butt, for two particular reasons. ~ Going green ~ The first was that like most people, I'm a keen recycler of any household matter that can possibly be recycled. I assiduously putting everything in the correct boxes for the councils doorstep collections. And we all know that taking small steps like using energy saving light bulbs and switching off appliances when they're not in use help environmentally too. With this in mind, it seemed like a natural progression for us to buy a water butt as soon as we could. As any gardener knows, most new plants need watering regularly until they're established, which can take up to a year. This is so the roots...

Review of Sankey Water Butt 1068

What a good looking butt.

Advantages: A great way of recycling water.
Disadvantages: Not one single thing.

...At the moment the plants are drinking the water as fast as we can give it to them, all of the vegetables at the allotment are well taken care of and we have managed to beg some larger plastic drums to catch any fresh rainwater. Naturally we don't want to waste good water and the plants love fresh rainwater, our one tidy water butt which was bought at a household auction developed a small split so it was time to rethink if we were going to continue to collect that precious rainwater at home. No matter what we always have to do a price check, so we paid a visit to our local B &Q and then hopped off to the garden centres. Sankey have produced a good slimline water butt with 100 litre capacity. It has a strong plastic lid and at the bottom it has a good sized twist flow tap. Both of us are used to the more traditional shaped water...

Review of Sankey Slim Space Saver Water Butt

* Want your butt pumping? . .

Advantages: Very good idea, very green.
Disadvantages: Not a lot.

...You are reading about a submersible pump by Hozelock, designed to fit into your water butt, and provide a supply of water suitable for watering your garden. Simple idea, and a good one too. It will feed water with enough pressure to provide a decent spray. A very good idea in these days of hose pipe bans. I did a review on a drill operated pump, not a bad idea I thought, a cheap option, especially if you only have a limited amount to shift, although someone suggested that a drill operated pump is a bit of a waste, why not get a real pump? Good thinking, good point. I have baled out strip footings with a bucket before now, and must say any sort of pump is an improvement. A proper submersible one is ideal. I must admit I was thinking of adapting my drill operated gizmo to fit my water butt, but having used one of these, I know which...

Review of Hozelock Water Butt Pump

Butt me no Butts

Advantages: Engaging, well-drawn characters
Disadvantages: May require multiple readings to fully appreciate

...There's definitely some satire in Will Self's latest novel, The Butt. A tourist carelessly flicks away his final cigarette, and then finds himself charged with attempted murder after it hits his neighbour's head. The satire's target, however, is less clear. Is Self (a man pilloried for taking cocaine on a politican's plane, remember) simply having a dig at the absurdity of the smoking bans that are sweeping across the Western world? Or is this a more sophisticated examination of compensation culture? Moral relativity between different cultures? Post-colonialism? Or, as seems likely, all of the above? The book is set in a distant land which can't quite make up its mind whether it's supposed to be Australia or the Middle East. It's never actually named, but clearly Allegorica would have been a perfectly apt name. Broadly Antipodean...

Review of The Butt - Will Self

I love a nice Butte! But you can keep the snakes.

Advantages: The Buttes are Awesome
Disadvantages: The drive and the snakes are really long

...off the damage I was probably doing the car, was the shock of all the long, thick, black and probably poisonous snakes sunning themselves on the roads. I HATE snakes with a passion. There at last Eventually we arrived at the parking space for the Pawnee Buttes at about 2pm. Kris had put a cooler box of water bottles in the back of the car but we hadn't eaten since breakfast and I was starting to get peckish. We grabbed the water and headed off down a sandy track, not quite sure what we were heading towards. About 10 minutes later it became clear what the fuss was all about. Rising up from the flat sandy plane were two enormous steep sided lumps of rock, sitting like two big broad cruise-liners in the middle of masses of nothingness. I'd vaguely recalled a school geography lesson on Mesas and Buttes when I was 13 but I couldn...

Water, water everywhere

Advantages: Improves your health
Disadvantages: Filter cartridge runs out every 4-5 weeks

...I read some time ago that the water Londoners now drink has passed through people at least 12 times. I also heard that someone put a coin into a glass of water from our flat tap water and the coin turned black. A few years ago there was the case in Camelford where tons of aluminium sulphate was dropped into the water supply causing consumers’ hair to turn green. A few months later a cluster of leukaemia cases was reported in local schools. Even bottled mineral or spring water is not safe to drink as the bottles have been found to contain animal faeces. So I decided to invest in a Brita household water filter. It is quite cheap at £15. The filter is reasonably easy to assemble. First you give all the parts a good wash. The filter cartridge is soaked for 20 minutes in water. The date when the cartridge expires is then set. Each...

Review of Brita Fjord Water Filter

water, water everywhere...

Advantages: dramatic improvement to the taste of water, useful in hot drinks, practical design of the Brita Fjord
Disadvantages: none

......and not a drop to drink! Well, that was the situation in my flat until I purchased a Brita water filter. The tap water was cloudy, almost opaque when it had settled in a glass, and was basically undrinkable - even just to swallow a tablet with. It smelt quite chlorinated, and I was fed up of spending so much money on bottled water, and lugging huge bottles back from the shops. So I finally decided to do something about it, and brought a water filter. I purchased mine from Argos, it was £18.75, and included one free cartridge, so in addition to this, I bought a pack of 4 cartridges, for £13.99. The water filter made a very impressive difference to the taste of my tap water - I really had not imagined it could have made it so much better. The filter is designed to reduce chlorine, and also metals such as lead, copper...

Water, Water, Everywhere

Advantages: Psychologically scary, strong performances from key cast members.
Disadvantages: Too many characters are introduced, the ending is a little silly.

...Walter Salles 2005 film 'Dark Water' is dark and mysterious, a truly chilling remake of Hideo Nakata's Japanese horror film which was originally released in 2002. It's an interesting concept that Walter Salles should take on a film of this sort, he'd previously had success with the film 'The Motorcycle Diaries' but 'Dark Water' is really something far different than this. What's more is that this is a major American remake and yet Walter Salles himself is Brazilian. Although this was not a predictable film for Walter Salles to have taken on, what I will say is that he has done an excellent job here and successfully directed a brilliant horror film. In the 2000s there has been quite a trend for remaking popular Japanese horror films. 'The Ring' films were remade, as too was the 'Ju-on' series, it's only right then that 'Dark Water...

Review of Dark Water (DVD)

Cool Water

Advantages: Great long lasting fragrance
Disadvantages: can be a little expensive

...Cool Waters is a really popular fragrance which has been on the market since 1996. Whenever the name "Cool Water" is mentioned just about everyone knows exactly which perfume you are talking about and most people have either bought it or smelled it before. I have been buying Davidoff Cool Water for about 6 or 7 years now and use it quite reguarly because of its exotic long lasting scent. I wouldn't go as far as saying its my favourite perfume because I have well over 100 bottles of perfume and chosing a favourite would be too hard because I love the smell of all my perfumes. But out of all my perfumes this is the one which I use the most, usually about 4 or 5 times a week. Whenever I look the bottle of Cool Water it reminds me of sitting at the beach looking at the waves in the sea. I personally think that the name of the perfume...
