Writer Tim Herlihy and director Frank Coraci bring us an endless series of references to Rubik's Cubes, "Miami Vice," David Lee Roth, the novelty of CDs and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, among others. By the two-thirds mark, the horse has been beaten well beyond the point of demise and the plot's predictability has gone from cloying to annoying. But there are a lot of funny moments and actors to keep The Wedding Singer afloat to the end. The opening scene, with a schmaltzy Sandler working a wedding reception with a Dead or Alive song then neatly saving the moment when the groom's drunken brother (Steve Buscemi) makes an ass of himself, made me optimistic.
