Wild about Wilde
Review of The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde - Oscar Wilde by
Telute
Advantages: Everything Oscar Wilde has written
Disadvantages: Cheap and tacky book won't last long
...Firstly Oscar Wilde was a genius and it follows that any complete collection of his works is therefore good.
That siad a complete collection also has its flaws. Firstly the book is bulky and probably won't last long if your an avid reader. The print is small and the paper cheap. A true fan of wilde would probably be better off spending money on a decent edition of his works or buying their favourite pieces seperatly.
That said the content of this collection is superb. It includes all the well-known pieces adn much that is less well-known but no less readable. Some of the early poetry is not particuarly good and the essays and de profundis are hard going especially if you know little about wilde. The intor is servicable but nothing special and is worth reading as an overview.
Wildes works thought are welll worth reading...

A Wilde Read
Review of Oscar Wilde's Wit & Wisdom - Oscar Wilde by
a-true-ben
Advantages: Very funny and insightful
Disadvantages: Not as good as reading complete Wilde
...I’ve always been quite a fan of quotations, and own several dictionaries or collections of such. It’s perhaps not entirely coincidence that I’ve also become quite a fan of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Although best known for his plays (such as The Importance of Being Earnest - a film version made a few years ago), I first really came to appreciate his genius when reading his works on art (indeed David Cooper’s ‘Blackwell’s Companion to Aesthetics’ includes an entry on Wilde, noting how in many ways his attitudes to art display a Platonic influence).
Wilde had an aphorism for every occasion, and is so widely quoted many of his phrases will no doubt be familiar (“I can resist everything except temptation”, “To lose one parent…may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness”). I think what really makes them is that they...

Not overly wild about The Wild!
Review of The Wild DVD by
marymoose99
Advantages: A generally nice animated film
Disadvantages: Lacks orignality, and it's no Monsters Inc!
...-----Why did I buy this film?-----
We were meant to be going to a party last night, but unfortunately it was cancelled. Hubby and I went onto plan B - DVDs, pizza and a bottle of vodka and diet coke! We went to Blockbusters and bought DVDs from the 3 for £20 range of ex-rentals (therefore costing £6.66 per DVD). We bought 3 each, and one of my 3 was "The Wild" - Disney's 46th Animated Classic (according to the DVD box). In general hubby and I love animated films - I had heard some not so good comments about this film, but I was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt.
-----Background-----
If you've seen the film "Madagascar", you will immediately notice similarities…..animals in Central Park Zoo in New York…escape to experience being in the wild. However, the story is a little bit different, and I certainly think it...

Are you wild
Review of Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak by
mumsymary
Advantages: great for children encorages reading fun
Disadvantages: none
...Where the wild things are. Story and pictures by Maurice Sendex.
I read this to my class today the children loved it and thought I would tell you about this book,
First i will give you the details then tell you the storyplot
This book published by picture lions Written by Maurice Sendak in 1963 I was surprised to see how long Ago it was published as it has not date at all .
This book won a Caldecott medal for the most distinguished picture book of the year 1964.
The Story is written in easy to read fairly large print.It is suitable for children aged between 4 and 8
The story is about Max who” one night wore his wolf suit and made mischief” (remind you of anyone?) you see a picture of him hanging his teddy and chasing the dog. His mother calls him “wild thing” and Max said “ I’ll eat you up! so he was sent to bed...

Wild Bore
Review of Wild 9s (PSX) by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Available very cheaply
Disadvantages: Still not worth the money
...I’m not much of a gamer. Sure, I have a PS2, but that was bought more for its ability to play DVDs rather than because I wanted a games console. And when I do play on it, I tend to concentrate on racing games. I get a buzz form that kind of thing; the roar of the engine, the squeal of the tyres and, more often than not, the crunch of the bodywork.
But a few years back, I was introduced to “Wild 9” at a friend’s house. It was a simple little game, being several years old even at that point, and looked like a lot of fun. But the best of it was, in these days of games costing anything up to £40.00, that it was in Toys ‘R’ Us for about £7.00. Even if it wasn’t really my kind of game, you can’t really go too far wrong for that kind of money. If only I’d known then what I know now.
Originally released in 1998, “Wild 9” was from...

How Wild Are You?
Review of Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak by
tange
Advantages: Enduring tale of fun with wonderful illustrations.
Disadvantages: Reminds me I'm getting older!
..."The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws."
******************************************
While at work today a young man came to the enquiry desk in the Children's Library and asked if I could help him locate a story he had enjoyed as a child. He said it had a young boy in a wolf costume, some rather wild looking monsters and an adventure through forests in it.
Usually from a vague description it is impossible to find things, but I knew exactly the book he meant because, funnily enough, children are STILL reading this story. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is as readable today as when it was first published ~ and that was way, way back in 1963!
~~~THE PLOT.
The story is about a little boy called Max who is sent...
Not So Wild About Will
Review of Wild Wild West DVD by
Mauri
Advantages: Reasonable Special effects
Disadvantages: Plot, Acting
...that the filmmakers have tried hard to recreate the wackiness of the original 60's show but whereas in a recent remake of another 60's hits 'Lost In Space' they got it wrong by treating it too seriously in this case they overdid the campness to such extent that you find it difficult to see beyond the special effects and action sequences an follow any kind of cohesiveness story. On suspect that the main problem is that while the original show was camp/slightly off the wall without really trying 'Wild Wild West' the film is self-consciously trying to hard to recreate the 60's chic feel of the original.
On to the performances… as far as Will Smith goes he's one of those actor that you either like of hate and this is true of all his performances (except Ali!) since he ends up playing himself. Surprise, surprise in this we find him as a wisecracking, woman...
Wilde
Review of Oscar Wildes Stories for Children - Oscar Wilde by
DiazX
Advantages: Beautifully poignant stories
Disadvantages: Maybe too moral, and a little sad
...I never really saw Oscar Wilde as a children’s author, sure a wit, a raconteur, an author, playwright and a notorious man about town but a children’s author no.
I was given a book by my wife Oscar Wildes Stories for Children and I wasn’t sure. What immediately caught my eye was the beautiful illustrations by P.J Lynch, delicate, rich and totally fitting to the stories.
Then I read the first story in the set was “The Selfish Giant.” It is wonderful, I’m sure I couldn’t do justice to it myself but Wilde weaves words so well it appeals to both children, my 3 and a half year old is rapt, and adults equally well, with little witty comments peppered about. The story is simple children play in the giants beautiful garden until the giant arrives home from visit to his friend the Cornish ogre “After seven years were over he had said all...
A Picture by Oscar Wilde
Review of The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde by
RichardW
Advantages: Brilliantly horrific and satirical, written with a sense of the beauty words can construct that astounds, this is simply wonderful...
Disadvantages: Age has not stolen it's power to disturb - this is no charming classic...
...Oscar Fingal O' Flahertie Wills Wilde was an author and playwright whose range covered just about every genre in the book, and in life he was both amused and pained that many thought this range suggested superficiality. That is one crime of which Wilde can never be justifiably accused. The content of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', a work which is almost semi-autobiographical, works on a multitude of levels.
In short, this is the story of a man exposed, through literature given to him by one Lord Henry, to the darker side of life, the sins and pleasures of the flesh and the spirit. Throwing himself into these pleasures with vigour and enthusiasm, the once pure-hearted Dorian Gray becomes a black beast. He remains youthful, beautiful and saintly looking, while all the time the titular picture of him grows more and more repellent...
Nearly a Wild Boar
Review of Wild Hogs (DVD) by
christianfilmcritic
Advantages: Entertaining for the most, with reasonable performances
Disadvantages: Some very strange humour
...►►► Synopsis
Fed up of their middle aged, mundane lives, let alone their moaning wives, four friends decide to set out on a motorbike road trip in search of freedom, fun and their lost youth. But it seems that their attempts to escape from their boring lives is fraught with disaster and mishaps, especially when they inadvertently upset a mean band of bikers called the Del Fuegos, who are intent on getting their revenge.
►►► Opinion
Despite having read numerous, sometimes scathing reviews of "Wild Hogs" I still had a burning desire to see it, and even though after watching it I tended to agree with a few of the negatives which have been levied against this film, I still really enjoyed it for what it was, a bit of simple entertainment. The film is nothing more than a blatant attempt...
