Wind freeze

Advantages: Suspenseful, gels together surprisingly well
Disadvantages: Weird special effects, largely unnecessary supernatural element

...geeky and obviously has a hidden agenda, but I was immediately on his side because of the girl's attitude to him. Like the girl, his character really does develop during the course of the film and so Holmes also has the opportunity to prove that he really can act. Although there isn't as much character change as with the girl, and therefore he perhaps doesn't make so much of an impact, I really liked the way that we are kept guessing as to his motivations - this little element of mystery really made the film for me and I think that Ashton Holmes did a great job of playing on it. Although he has very little on-screen time, Martin Donovan, who plays an 'interesting' policeman, is worth a mention. I've seen the actor recently in The Haunting in Connecticut, in which he was largely a waste of space. In Wind Chill, however, he is actually very...

Wind this caterpillar up

Advantages: fun
Disadvantages: may not last long

...Little Arabella Millar had a woolly caterpillar, first it crawled upon her mother, then upon her baby brother, all said Arabella Millar take away that caterpillar The wind up caterpillar from Toyday toys would be a good aid in reading /saying this poem. . The plastic tobar wind up caterpillar is suitable for children aged over 3 years old+ These toys come in either 2 shades of green, yellow or orange they are clockwork caterpillars only 8 cm long. The caterpillar had 6 segments to his body that move when the little wind up key on the side gets turned... This caterpillar will them move quite rapidly across a smooth flat surface. He sort of wriggles along on wheels that are hidden under his body. This toy is quite fun a novelty. I might use it with my special need children to get their interest for them to eye...

A BIT OF WIND

Advantages: Good summer beer
Disadvantages: It's not summer

...On walking into the pub one Friday a couple of weks ago, I noticed a great big banner proclaiming "OKTOBERFEST!". "Yes, ya feckin' dancer!" I silently exclaimed, before scanning the fonts and fridges for all the Bavarian treasures on offer. Pointlessly, as it turned out. Nary a Paulaner to be seen. No hint of a lightly grilled bratwurst nuzzling my nostrils and not one single oompah brashly invading 'ma lugs'. (Come to think of it, was I the only person wearing a ridiculously tight pair of lederhosen?) Nah, it was just some sort of promotion whereby they're offering selected beers at the ridiculously low price of £1.29 a pint. I suppose the cheap beer softened the disappointment of the blatant flagrancy of the Trades Descriptions Act (1968). Oh well. One of the beers on this very generous offer, was CAIRNGORM'S TRADE WINDS...

When the Wind Blows

Advantages: Charming art, devastating story
Disadvantages: Compact panels

...Written and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, When the Wind Blows was his first attempt at an adult graphic novel. Released in 1982 on the back of his success with children?s books, it tells a sorrowful tale of the effect a nuclear attack on England has on a retired couple living in rural Sussex. A heavy topic, but the dark, yet compassionate sense of humour pervading the book lightens the mood somewhat. Twinned with the cosy, pastel shaded art-work, the unsettling, yet warm-hearted story closely examines the initial effects of a disaster on two people who have never done anything to deserve it. The harmless pair are developed through their interactions with each other, and (some clunky exposition in the first page aside) are convincingly characterised. Their tender, occasionally abrasive relationship adds some humour as well as...

Blowing in the wind

Advantages: Clever parody, some very funny scenes
Disadvantages: The music

...Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean are still best known for their brilliant spoof rockumentary ?This Is Spinal Tap? almost 20 years later they?re back but this time as a folk band from the 60?s trying to re-launch their career. THE FILM In the same way that ?Spinal Tap? pretended to be a documentary about the Rock band Spinal Tap A mighty wind follows in a documentary style the setting up and performance of a folk reunion concert featuring top folk band from the 60?s 'The Main Street Singers', 'The Folksmen' and 'Mitch and Mickey' as a tribute for legendary folk impresario Irving Steinbloom. Of course as in 'Spinal Tap' all the characters and bands are fictitious but if you are not careful you could be taken in to believing it. In spinal tap the band was a parody of all the hair metal bands of the time and in...

The Name of the Wind - Do You Know It?

Advantages: Well-written; humorous; enjoyable; escapist.
Disadvantages: Cliched; not entirely mind-blowing.

...any real magic powers of his own. Only a few authors have successfully pulled off the more traditional, clichéd storyline, for example Raymond Feist in his magnificent ?Magician? trilogy, or even in her own peculiar way J K Rowling, whose ?Harry Potter? stories are a refreshing, if juvenile, twist on the well-worn tale. Patrick Rothfuss is a new name that I can add to this list, and he comes as something of a surprise. ?The Name of the Wind? is his debut novel, and to date (June 2009), the only one that he has published. A 36 year old College lecturer, Rothfuss comes without any notable literary background or recommendation. In view of this, ?The Name of the Wind? has had remarkable success, appearing on the New York Times bestseller lists, winning the 2007 Quill Award for best sci-fi/fantasy and appearing in Publishing Weekly?s ?best...

The epic 'Gone with the wind'

Disadvantages: maybe to long for some

...I first saw this film when i was about 9 years old i watched it with my nana, and since that day i was hooked and i watch it whenever i get the chance. The film is about a young girl named katie scarlett o'hara (vivien leigh) who lives in the deep south at the time of the American Civil War. She lives on a large plantation called Tara with her father Gerald o'hara, mother Ellen o'hara, two sisters and lots of butlers, servents gardens etc Scarlett is in love with Ashley Wilkes who lives at a nearby plantation, Ashley doesnt feel the same way about scarlett. Is this some kind of wind up?

Advantages: No batteries needed, useful hook to hang in the tent, protective cage surrounds the LEDs
Disadvantages: Looks cheap and nasty, quite expensive outlay but will save you in the long run

...Everyone who goes camping, or has camped in the past knows the importance of having a good and reliable light, torch or lantern. There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of a dark and rainy night for a call of nature with the toilet block a 200m walk only to find that your lantern batteries have given up the ghost and you have no light. It is moments like these that can seriously make you consider whether camping is really worth it. Before I got this lantern I always ensured that I had loads of spare batteries to ensure that I never got caught short, but this turned out to be quite expensive and I was forever ?mislaying? the spares. Wind up torches, lights and lanterns have been around for years and I have read many good, as well as many bad things about them so I had never investigated any further. That was until I...

Shadow of the Wind

Advantages: riveting story with a great mystery
Disadvantages: none

..."The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruis Zafon is my favorite book I have read. What sets this book apart from all the rest is it is not predictable in the slightest. Everytime you think that you have worked out the mystery the story takes a turn and you find yourself re-reading the last few pages wondering how you could have missed the events that were to unfold. It's beautifully written, depth of characters, and descriptive narrative of Spain. Both the plot and the characters take the reader through a range of emotions from excitement to love, from sadness to anger. The start of the book begins with Daniel as a ten year old boy and the reader is on the journey with him to both solve the mystery of the author, as well as learn about himself as he becomes an adolescent. By the end of the book you will wish you could continue learning...

Review of The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon

The Shadow of the Wind

Advantages: Emotional Melodrama
Disadvantages: Some very slight mis-translations

..."The Shadow of the Wind" was bought for me by a friend for which I am now very grateful as it's not the sort of book I ever would have thought of buying for myself, both from the point of view of the story line that the cover blurb promises but also because it is written by a Spanish writer of whom I'd never heard of before. Daniel Sempere is a curious 10 year old boy living in Barcelona, who is taken by his father one day to the "Cemetery of Forgotten Books", a mysterious labyrinth full to the rafter of obscure and little known books. Daniel is allowed to select one book and take it home with him; quite by random he chooses a book titled "The Shadow of the Wind" by Julian Carax. Daniel reads the book and is so enchanted by what he has read he decides to discover more about the mysterious author. As Daniel grows up and continues his...
