If you go down to The Woods today...
Advantages: Pace and plot
Disadvantages: Well-crafted rather than literary genius
...Watching his father die, Paul Copeland remembers spying on him in the woods. Only once. Many Saturdays his father would ''go fishing'' and not take his son with him. Paul probably always knew that it was to the woods his father went, because he sometimes went there too. On this one occasion he did follow, and spied. He watched his father digging in the earth, and saw the tears, and the anger.
Now Paul is all grown up: a prosecutor by profession, he is raising a daughter alone following the death of his wife. He is helped by family?his wife's sister and her husband. He also gets the kind of 'slack' that lone fathers do get ? unlike lone mothers, who labour under a presumption that their being alone is somehow their fault, or maybe just that they are expected to be better at it.
A body is found. And Paul finds himself helping...

Norwegian Wood
Advantages: many
Disadvantages: none
...The first thing I should say about my reading of Norwegian Wood was that in a single particular it was not faithful to the Japanese print run, which is that mine was a single printed and bound edition, and not the red-half, green-half you might come across.... having got that out of the way, I can tell you about the contents.
Norwegian Wood is a rather condensed moment of poised literary brilliance. I approached it with trepidation, since it was so widely lauded and applauded and that, in the spirit of wilful cynicism, always throws a spanner into my appreciative works. But in this case, I was willing to go with the crowd, not in a loud, baying way, because it's simply not the kind of book that I feel merits that kind of reaction; it's a quiet, thoughtful, lyrical read, and as such deserves a quiet, thoughtful, admiring reaction...

Will you be the next Tiger Woods?
Advantages: Great online play
Disadvantages: Have to buy extra courses.
...Introduction
EA Have been making Tiger Woods games since the end of the 1990's. Although I'm not really a golf fan, I have tapped into this series on a couple of occasions previously with the 2004 and 2008 editions. Both these editions were on the PC so I decided to take the plunge and buy Tiger Woods 2010 on the Xbox 360. I was reluctant to pay the full asking price of £40, so when I saw it reduced to £30 in Game I decided to buy it.
Real Time Weather
For the first time, Tiger Woods 2010 boasts realtime weather. This means that if its raining on your selected course at the time you are playing your round, it will be raining in the game. This is a nice touch and is very appropriate when playing online tournaments as people who have the better conditions will have more of a chance of posting a decent score, sadly...

If You Go Down To The Woods Today.......
Advantages: Gripping story
Disadvantages: You won't want to put it down!
...Readers of my reviews will probably know that I am quite a fan of Harlan Coben. An author introduced to me by my daughter, and I am now reading my way through every book I can get my hands on that he has written!
The Woods is another stand alone novel by Coben, and another fantastic thriller which I found difficult to put down until I had finished it, and had me hooked from the first page.
In 'The Woods' we are introduced to Paul 'Cope' Copeland, a widowed parent and also a County Prosector, a position that does not sit too favourably with some people.
His latest case is to get a conviction on two young students accused of date rape, one of whom has a rich and influential father who is determined he will stop at nothing to get his son off the hook, and after a few veiled threats don't work, employs a Private Investigator to try...

Get Your Claws Into Tiger Woods '10
Advantages: The controls are great
Disadvantages: Graphics are fairly average
...The 'Tiger Woods' series has set the benchmark for golfing videogames over the years, and as someone who enjoys a round or two in real life, I'm usually the first to buy the new title upon its annual release.
What I usually look for in a golf game Is an authenticity to the actual experience, and however good the Tiger Woods franchise is, it has in the past lacked realism due to some dodgy swing mechanics and less than accurate controls. This year's incarnation, 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour '10', sorts out these issues via a complete overhaul of the control system with the addition of Nintendo's new 'MotionPlus' add-on.
For those of you who haven't heard of 'MotionPlus', it's a small white box which clips onto the underside of the Wii controller, and increases the precision of the device around eight-fold. When purchased on its own, the Motion...

Whitehorn Woods
Advantages: good read
Disadvantages: None
...Whitethorn Woods is based in a small sleepy Irish town . As it was getting busier in Rossmore the residents were discussing whether to have a bypass . The idea for a bypass had mixed feelings with the locals. If it did go ahead the bypass will have to go through an area of woodland which was called Whitethorn Woods and the well which was dedicated to a St Ann who was supposed to have spiritual powers and people come to to it to help with their various problems. We are introduced to one of the main charcters in the book straight away and he is called Father Brian Flynn the curate. He then travels around and visits some of the locals and we start to get a flavour of the book. It is very easy to read and the storyline is a little simple but as i enjoy reading Maeve Binchy I stuck at it but I can say it was not one of her better novels...

Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield
Advantages: Lots Of History And Wildlife
Disadvantages: Some Footpaths Can Get Messy
...Ecclesall Woods can be found about 3 miles to the South West of Sheffield City Centre. This area of Woodland is vast and covers an area of approximately 140 acres making them the largest semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire. The Woods are a very popular visitor attraction and are particularly valued for their Wildlife, and their Historic and Archaeological features.
Ecclesall Woods are designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) for the Wildlife that they support, which includes several species of Bird that are relatively common here yet not found elsewhere within the Sheffield area. These include Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit and Hawfinch.
Exploring Ecclesall Woods is very easy since there are dozens of different access points. The main part of the Woods are sandwiched between Ecclesall Road South on the Northern...

Under Milk Wood - It's a play for voices boyo
Advantages: Fantastic words that are wonderful read or listened to.
Disadvantages: None for me
...While clearing out some stuff I came across an old audio cassette of Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood' from when I did my English A Level. Sadly the cassettes are no use to me anymore, cassettes being a victim of the technology revolution. But just seeing the cassettes sent me out to get a new copy of the book, I just had to read it again. Sadly no hypnotic Welsh voice of Richard Burton, but still the wonderful words sounded Welsh in my brain as I read the words in front of me. As I read about 'the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea', I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck tingling - God I love that book!!
For those of you who do not know the book, it is actually a 'play for radio' written in in 1953 by the wonderful Dylan Thomas. It actually started out with the title 'Quite Early One Morning...

If You Go Down To The Woods Today...
Advantages: The music at times makes the film a little creepy.
Disadvantages: Performances and plot line are awful, and for the most part the music is too.
...'In The Woods' is the 2000 released film from the director Lynn Drzick. Unsurprisingly it was the last film that she directed and were it not for the fact that this film was available to me for the princely sum of £1 some time back in WH Smith then I probably never would have purchased this DVD. It has a pretty eye catching front cover, but then when you flip it over and take a look at its reverse then there are some pretty off-putting screen takes here. The picture quality is fuzzy and surely you feel that they could have put more effort into the production of the DVD than this, but then again when it's only costing you a pound you can really have no complaints. On the front of this DVD is also a comment made by someone called David Horn from 'SOD Magazine' proclaiming that this film is 'Creepier than Blair Witch Project'. I had no idea...

Whatever goes on Under Milk Wood?!!
Advantages: An unusual but highly interesting play for radio
Disadvantages: None
...for the South Wales Evening Post.
It was at some point during 1933 that his poetry was gaining recognition but by then Dylan had moved to London and was fast gaining a reputation as being a drunkard.
Like many accomplished poets Dylan based his work on what he `knew` and that included his beloved Wales, childhood, lost innocence, life and death and a huge helping of nostalgia.
Dylan wrote his most famous radio play `Under Milk Wood` over a number of years. Some say that a visit to Newquay was the inspiration for the tale, others report that Dylan wrote the play as his stance against the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, it was his way of saying to the world that there was still much beauty in our troubled world.
Under Milk Wood beckons us to tune in to the ramblings of the Llareggub village ( a seaside village ) folk going about...
