The Sheffield Crucible Theatre
Review of Crucible Theatre (Sheffield) by
micksheff
Advantages: Good Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not Particularly Attractive From The Outside
...There is little doubt that the Sheffield Crucible Theatre has become World famous due its hosting of the World Snooker Championships. There is however a lot more to this place than a temporary Snooker Venue and since it is my most local Theatre and one that I am very familiar with I thought that it may make an ideal subject for my latest review.
The Crucible Theatre was designed by Tanya Moiseiwitsch and opened in 1971. It is one of three Theatres within Sheffield operated by Sheffield International Venues which form the Sheffield Theatres Complex. The other two Theatres within the group are the Lyceum Theatre, which is situated adjacent to the Crucible and the Studio. The Sheffield Theatres Complex is the largest Theatre Complex outside of London.
The Crucible is the main producing Venue within the group but it also does receive...

The Journal Tyne Theatre
Review of Tyne Theatre and Opera House (Newcastle) by
treaclepins
Advantages: Beautiful building, historically significant.
Disadvantages: A bit shabby and doesn't attract the big shows.
...This is the forgotten theatre of Newcastle, seemingly doomed to play second fiddle to the Theatre Royal. The world's oldest working Victorian theatre on Newcastle's Westgate Rd. was originally built in 1867 by William B Parnell. The three story Journal Tyne Theatre is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building, and it is one of Newcastle's many cultural treasures. (This area of Newcastle has some incredible buildings - the old 'Wengers' building, the 'Lit & Phil' etc. so have a good look around while you are here). The theatre has faced adversity and a series of catastrophes over the years and yet, against all odds, it is not only still standing, but still playing to the (somewhat diminished) crowds.
I used to work in this theatre in the 1980's, as an usherette whilst studying 'theatre' at Newcastle College. (The college lease part...

A different kind of trip to the theatre .
Review of Kingston Theatre Hotel, Kingston-upon-Hull by
grafter123
Advantages: Good Value , lovely setting , handy for the theatre , great food
Disadvantages: None for me
...Kingston-Upon-Hull , or as it is usually known locally Hull , is situated on the north bank of the River Humber in the county of East Yorkshire . If you are visiting the City from the south you will find the Humber Bridge provides much quicker access than of old . However there is a toll .
The City itself has numerous , free museums , the Ferens Art Gallery , the Deep ( pay to enter ) , a few new shopping centres ( the St. Stephens project still being under construction ) and a couple of theatres ( Hull Truck and the New theatre ) If you decide to visit check out via the local tourist office .
If you are looking for a centrally based place to stay , look no further than the Kingston Theatre Hotel . If you just want a good place to pop in , and wine and dine , then this is also the place for you .

Theatre with a dramatic background!
Review of Minack Theatre Cornwall by
beanie8844
Advantages: spectacular backdrop of the sea, very cheap
Disadvantages: performances only of an evening
...Previously when I have been to Cornwall and the weather has been good we have spent most of our time on the many beaches. This time however the weather was poor, with lots of wind and rain - not the sort of weather you want to be sitting on the beach in, unless you're a surfer of course and then I suppose it is ideal! This didn't really matter too much though because it gave us a chance to visit many of the famous sights and attractions. We visited lots of places including Saint Michaels Mount and the Eden Project, but probably the most charming thing that we visited was the Minack Theatre in Porthcurno. Unlike many of the other attractions it had a real Cornish feel to it and was really worth seeing.
For those of you who have never heard of the Minack Theatre (and that's probably most of you) it's a really spectacular place...

ADC Theatre
Review of ADC Theatre by
teenyreenie
Advantages: Can be incredibly entertaining and innovative theatre
Disadvantages: Can also be pretentious rubbish!
...The ADC Theatre is Cambridge University's main theatre. It runs two shows a week, a mainshow and lateshow, every week during term. Almost all shows are directed, produced and acted by students of both universities in the city, as well as recent graduates and on occasion people who just work in Cambridge, which is something they're justifiably very proud of.
The casting process is generally quite open across the Cambridge student theatre scene (including theatres like the Playroom and college venues such as Queens' Fitzpatrick Hall), which is huge: there is a lot of nepotism, however, and while you will generally still get offered parts if you're good enough, be warned that you could be auditoning for a part that's already unoffically been given to the director's best friend, or some other near-incestuous connection. This has...

The Marlowe Theatre
Review of The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury by
daylehall
Advantages: Great range of shows, nice layout, good facilities
Disadvantages: None
...About The Marlowe Theatre
The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury was redeveloped in 2005 and currently it is spread across three floors. Inside, there are two auditoriums, one of which has 1,200 seats and the other one has around 200 seats. Also inside is a bar on each of the three floors, a café and a hospitality suite.
Where Is The Theatre Located
The Marlowe Theatre is at the lower end of the City centre and is easily accessible whatever you choose at your mode of transport. There are plenty of car parks only a few minutes walk away and there is even a car park behind the theatre. The train and bus stations are also only a 5-7 minute walk away.
What Can You Do At The Marlowe Theatre
There is a large variety of performances held at the Marlowe Theatre and these include plays, concerts, festivals, musicals, dance shows and of course...

FORTUNE THEATRE THE WOMAN IN BLACK VERY REALISTIC
Review of Fortune Theatre (London) by
emu128
Advantages: Realistic
Disadvantages: Not so good theatre
...Don't you just love all scary stories!? Whether there ghostly or monsterous, you usually love 'em' like I do, or you just quite plainly, simply hate 'em'! Each weekend, well not literally EVERY weekend, but some weekends, I sit down in front of the telly and if there isn't any decent comedies on, I'll simply watch a horror movie instead, ok, ok, so maybe sometimes I'll pull a pillow over my head and then other times I'll jump and maybe even scream but they are fun to watch aren't they!?
This week has been, 'THANK GOD' the last week of school for myself and many others too, this means a it has been a supposedly FUN week for me!! (SUPPOSEDLY!!) One of my main attractions of the week happened on Tuesday, on Tuesday I went to London on an English/Drama school trip to a theatre called the 'Fortune Theatre' to watch 'The Woman In Black...

The Sheffield Lyceum Theatre
Review of Lyceum Theatre (Sheffield) by
micksheff
Advantages: Beautiful Place
Disadvantages: Shows can sell out quickly
...The Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield is the oldest of the city’s three Theatre’s (the other two being The Crucible and The Studio which both opened in1971).
The Lyceum opened in 1897 and was designed by the famous architect W G R Sprague, it is now his only surviving work outside of London. It is 1,068-seat traditional proscenium arch theatre. It is a large theatre and today it is the main receiving venue for touring productions in the city attracting a diverse programme of talent including Opera, Ballets and West End musicals. In fact recently Tennessee William’s Suddenly Last summer, directed by Michael Grandage toured out of the Lyceum in February 2004, prior to beginning a 10-week run on the West End.
The repetition of the Lyceum has put it firmly on the Theatrical map but its fortunes have not always been so good.
By the early...

A night at the theatre.
Review of Sunderland Empire Theatre (Sunderland) by
cabsookie
Advantages: Great shows..
Disadvantages: Not much leg room. lotsa stairs to upper circle..STEEP
...My partner and I went to the theatre in Tyne and wear.
The Empire Theatre, Sunderland.
01915148439
We went to see The Rocky Horror Show.
I booked the tickets online, and with only a few days to go to the opening nigh,t we couldn't have the tickets delivered and so were given a number to take to the box office on the night. We did this without a hitch It was easy to sort.
Sunderland Empire is a lovely building to look at from the road opposite, It Is quite old fashioned loking and is situated right on the corner of the street it is well signposted to find.
Some history..
Sunderland Empire started to be built in 1906 and was completed in 1907 It was originally owned by three men, one of them was a local lad who started out as a busker!
It became hard to fill and closed in 1959 reopening by a corporation in 1960...

Theatre Of The People
Review of Citizen´s Theatre (Glasgow) by
Kozinski
Advantages: Good productions
Disadvantages: There are quite a few restricted viewing seats in the main space
...The Citizen's Theatre is probably one of the most respected theatres in the world. Pierce Brosnan, Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Rupert Everett to name but a few who have tread the Citz boards.
The building has three theatre spaces: The Studio, The Circle, and The Citizen's Theatre.
The Studio theatre is set in traverse (audience on two sides) and plays host to smaller productions, visiting companies and rehearsed readings.
The Circle is set in the round (audience on all sides) and again is host to smaller productions.
The Citizen's Theatre itself is a proscenium arch and is the main space. This is used for the larger productions, or high profile visiting companies.
Overall the Citz is an excellent theatre with great productions. The ticket prices are average, but if you are a student, Equity member or Unemployed your ticket...
