Getting Blood out of Stones, Smiths, Williams etc
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  jennybosson

Advantages: You save peoples' lives. And it's a great feeling.
Disadvantages: NONE - so go and do it now!

...Last night I got in from work, made dinner and saved a life or two! What did you do? I hope this review will give you information about giving blood and an insight into a typical donation trip. I will try to provide all the information you would need to be able to make a decision and give you the peace of mind as that may be the only thing that is holding you back. And if I manage to convince one of you to go and donate then I have been successful. Let me tell you a bit about who takes your blood. The National Blood Service ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ NOTE: Information taken from the website about the National Blood Service. The National Blood Service is not to be confused with the National Health Service. We are an integral part of the NHS, and we guarantee to deliver blood, blood components, blood products... Save a life, give blood
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  Collingwood21

Advantages: Free, does not take long, you can save a life
Disadvantages: May feel a bit faint afterwards

...Currently, less than 10% of the eligible population gives blood on a regular basis – this figure comes from the latest annual report of the National Blood Service, and I have to admit that it surprises me. Donating blood only takes about half an hour, two or three times a year, is free, contributes an invaluable resource to the NHS and contrary to what many people believe, it does not hurt. I hope that I can cover everything members should need to know about donation in this op and that those of you reading it who do not currently give will give it at least some consideration – after all, you never know when you or someone close to you may just need a transfusion. ● The National Blood Service The NBS is part of the National Health Service, and developed out of the first voluntary blood service which the British... Save Lives, Give Blood. You might need it one day.
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  al1892

Advantages: Who wouldn't want to save lives? Free biscuits!
Disadvantages: None in the grand scheme of things.

...I've given blood a total of 6 times now and will keep going as long as I can. Everyone should go at least once. Personally I believe that the hardest bit is going the first time as you don't know what to expect. Certainly this is how I felt and is what put me off. When I was in University I shared my flat in halls with a medicine student, annoying as she was she did have one good impact on me by encouraging me to go and give blood. So one day when the National Blood Service (NBS) came to the university I thought I'll be brave and go along. I took my friend with me on the understanding that we would both give blood and support each other. She wussed out but I went through with it and was so glad I did. Plus as a special thing for students they had a voucher for free ben and jerry's - mmmm save lives and get free ice-cream, you can see... Read review

High Blood Pressure
Review of Member Advice on High Blood Pressure by  Elainebaba

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...High Blood Pressure. Blood pressure is one of the main concerns that affects out society. So why is there such concern? Why are so many are there so many strokes that may arise form ignored high blood pressure? Why does it cause so many deaths? To help you to appreciate what is Blood Pressure, we need to know why this is very important knowledge to know. Blood pressure is the physical influence that pushes the blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood is needed to carry its supply from the heart to all of the body’s tissue and organs. Every time this happens, particularly when you are resting it pumps out its blood to the arteries at a rate about 60-70 times a minute. When your doctor measures the heart, using a blood pressure it is measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer... Read review

Give Blood Today - You May Need It Tomorrow
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  darrenloud

Advantages: Saves thousands of people's lives every year.
Disadvantages: N/A

...Giving blood is one of the greatest gifts you could ever give someone. The NHS works very hard to provide an efficient blood service to those who need it. More complex operations are now being performed, which required larger volumes of blood. More accidents on our roads happend every year, which requires more blood too. The demand for blood is very great indeed, those that receive a blood transfusion are forever in the debt of those that donate blood regularly. If you give blood regularly, you're a special person. If you have given blood before, I'm sure you have felt that feeling of 'I have done something good today'. I know I have, and it something I have never felt at any other point in my life. I have given blood four times now (that's the maximum I could have in my life) and am due to give blood again in September... Read review

Donating Blood - Dos and Don'ts
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  jonathancowley

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...The National Blood Service (NBS) needs to attract thousands of new blood donors every year just to replace people who can no longer give blood. A lot of people are a bit squeamish about the idea of voluntarily going to a place to have a needle stuck in a vein, but I would guess that for most people if they gave blood once they would wonder why they had worried. There's been a couple of ops written already about why the blood is needed so much, so I'm going to concentrate more on the actual process of blood donation with a handy list of Dos and Don'ts. DO - find out about donation centres in your area. www.blood.co.uk has information on permanent blood donation centres across the country as well as mobile vans which visit local community centres/places of work etc. There's bound to be a donation session somewhere near you... Giving blood-the simple way to be a hero.
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  jlkovacs1

Advantages: Helping to save people's lives
Disadvantages: Outweighed by the advantages!

...Everybody wants to be a hero...well, giving blood gives you the chance to be one. Many of us will themselves need, or will know someone else who will need blood during a hospital procedure in order to help them survive, yet a low percentage of the British population actually give blood on a regular basis. Why is this? Many reasons are given to people as to why they can't or won't give: 1. "I don't have the time!" Giving blood only takes about an hour out of your day. You only have to give around 3 times a year, so that's three hours in total. In the time it takes to watch one Lord of the Rings movie, you could save three lives: isn't this far more worthwhile? If you're really pushed for time, then permanent blood donation centres, in various locations nationwide, offer an appointment system so you can book in to donate during your... Read review

Blood Donating - My Story (don't be scared)
Review of Member Advice on Blood Donation by  JeeanA

Advantages: I'm helping others - and feeling good about it!
Disadvantages: There are none

...I am going to try and not cover much of the ground that other members have in the writing of this review. The reason I decided to write this is to try and get other people that, like me, are absolutely petrified of needles, injections and all things related but would still be physically able to do it, to try and change their minds and persuade them to give donating blood a go. I have hated things like injections all my life. I nearly fainted when I had my Rubella jab at age 12 in school, but that's just me and just an example to give you a bit of an idea of how bad my phobia (for want of a better word) is and what a big deal it is for me to now be a blood donor. My Dad has been a donor for as long as I can remember. My Mum has been in and out of hospital on several occasions and needed blood on some of these stays. Giving... Read review

A Blood-Curdling Review.
Review of LLoyds Pharmacy Blood Pressure Monitor by  FlameDruid

Advantages: You might get fixed
Disadvantages: Most men prefer socks or pants.

...The Lloyd's Pharmacy Blood Pressure Monitor is the most peculiar present I've ever been given for my birthday. I even emailed my sister and told her I thought so. She pointed out that I'm getting older and if it stops me getting a heart attack or having a stroke then it was a good present. I think she's right and I didn't mean to be ungrateful. Of course it's better to know. It's just that I was feeling quite well when she sent it and now that I've taken my blood pressure and looked everything up in the supplied chart I think I might be at death's door. Just kidding! This is actually a great present for me. I tend to veer from dieting and long distance running to lolling about with a bottle of whisky and as much chocolate as I can find. I ended my last committed and effective diet on Christmas Day of 2006 and I'm still showing... Read review
