HP 530 - Core Duo T2050 1.6 GHz - 15.4" TFT
Review of HP 530 - Core Duo T2050 1.6 GHz - 15.4" TFT by
sunderlandcomputers
Advantages: Cost, Reliability, Battery Life, WIFI Range
Disadvantages: Display not best, memory - not enough
...So what's it got and is it worth it.
My 530 come with Vista Home Basic 32 pre-installed with the option of the Business 32 version for a little extra. It's powered by an IntelCore Due T2050 processor at 1.6GHz with 2MB level 2 cache and 533MHz FSB. The memory let's it down at only 512Mb, which struggles to keep up woth the demand of Vista.
The good news is that the memory can be upgraded to up to 2Gb, however we opted to trash Vista in favour of our ol favourite Windows XP Home.
Storage is a reasonable 80Gb SATA Hard Disk Drive and a combi DVD/CD RW drive wth double layer capability allows for essential backups, and writing speeds that won't keep you waiting.
The screen is 15.4 inches with WXGA Brightview technology.
There is a wired network adaptor as well as a wireless connection via a Broadcom 802.11 b/g, allowing...

Putting the Joy back into notebooks
Review of BenQ Joybook 8000 - P4-M 2.4 GHz - 15.2" TFT by
Erinath
Advantages: Stylish, fast, packed full of features
Disadvantages: Short battery life, heats up quickly
...After spending a long time deliberating over which notebook to buy, I happened upon the BenQ JoyBook 8000 second hand & can't believe how packed with features it is.
Appearance
With a brushed steel effect cover & the Q Media buttons on the front, the JoyBook 8000 really is a classically stylish machine. The keyboard is very slightly translucent with deep blusih-grey keys, whilst there is a brass coloured strip around the edge of the case to stop it from looking too surgical.
Screen Resolution & Clarity
Despite being a couple of years old already, the Joybook's screen is a sharp & crisp 15.2" TFT active matrix widescreen, allowing for a startling clear picture.
Connectivity
I was astonished by the number of ports on this: 4 USB, 2 firewire (IEEE 1394), ethernet, modem, S-video out, RCA connector, parallel port, VGA & a PC...

The Toughbook that really is tough.
Review of Panasonic Toughbook 72 - P4-M 1.6 GHz - 13.3" TFT by
richard_millar
Advantages: Hard wearing, good quality, valur for money
Disadvantages: Chunky and heavy
...This panasonic toughbook really is a tough, hard wearing laptop. You can drop it and it will still work. A work collegue actually drove his car over this laptop and it still worked exactly the same. It is a laptop that certainly lives upto its name. This baby puts the TOUGH in Toughbook.
Do not be put off by the extra weight, chunky and basic look of this laptop. Remember looks can be deceiving.
The keyboard is one of the best I have used on a laptop. The mousepad is not as nice but hey this is a toughbook. Hit the pad hard and it works like a dream.
You have all thefunctionality and speed of aPentium 4 1.8ghz processor backed up by 256mb of ram. So not only do you get a hard wearing laptop butit is quick too.
The hard drives in these I have found are a bit suspect. In some of the machines they work fine for ages. In others...

Think Smart, ThinkPad
Review of Lenovo ThinkPad R60e 0657 - Core Duo T2300E 1.66 GHz - 15" TFT by
Pyrokeet
Advantages: many unique features, robust, trustworthy
Disadvantages: more expensive than some brands
...is the hard drive password, which it asks for as soon as it starts the hard drive. This has similar properties to those just stated, but I'm told that they even work if you take the hard drive out and place it in another computer, so your data should be safe from your garden-variety thieves (It may not stand up to proper thieves).
INPUTS/OUTPUTS
This model has three USBs slots, a monitor out, a line out, and a mic in. It also has bluetooth and wireless radio.
It does not have S-VIDEO, or infra-red.
OS
This ThinkPad comes loaded with Windows XP SP2 Professional, and says it is 'Vista Ready', but I think it isn't, unless you upgrade it.
HARDWARE
The Intel Centrino Duo 1.66 GHz processor is perfectly suitable to everyday work and leisure based tasks, but may not be up to any hardcore gaming, but I'm sure any hardcore gamers will know...

IBM ThinkPad X41
Review of Lenovo ThinkPad X41 2525 - Pentium M 778 1.6 GHz - 12.1" TFT - with X4 UltraBase by
tartupets
Advantages: Extreme performace and user experience
Disadvantages: 128 mb graphics memory low performance
...IBM Thinkpad x41 with the Ultrabase is the best and most powerful laptop of its kind. 1.3 kg and with the 8 cell battery up to 6 hours operating time, it is mostly suited for travelers and collage students
Instead of the standard 512 mb of RAM, ive got the 1.5 GB installed, so it is faster and has better performance.
It has the touchpoint interface, which is the second best after the mouse because it is more precise than the touchPad.
The ThinkLight HDD protection is useful when you are traveling by bus or train because it suits itself to repeated bumps and allows the HDD run even with heavy vibration.
As suited to IBMs, there is a little light in the edge of the monitor, which is very good in the dark.
Especially I like the location of the processor cooling vent, which is on the side and keeps the processor cool even...

A slightly dated but effective laptop
Review of Acer TravelMate 272X - P4-M 1.6 GHz - 14.1" TFT by
ASA5044
Advantages: Solidly built, looks good, OS supplied, Pentium M CPU
Disadvantages: Wireless not built in, poor battery life, just a CD-ROM, USB 1
...laptops' standards, it is lacking in a few areas, ie the battery was always pretty poor (I do suspect my battery was a one-off) and there is no in built wireless. However you only have to spend at most £15 for a PC-card wireless adaptor. Also you only get a built CD-ROM, which is very basic.
It has a good range of connections but has almost unforgivably has USB 1 ports, not USB 2. I have a Creative Zen Micro (coincidently I've also reviewed) and an external CD-RW and the the speed of the USB ports are shown up badly here.
The Travelmate 272X isn't the most portable laptop on the market. I used to take it to university but the poor battery life and weight (it weighs about 3kg) just become too much hassle and I use it as a desktop at home.
It is best to think of this laptop as a low cost laptop that somehow acquired a Pentium M processor...

Review of Compaq Presario 2810EA
Review of Compaq Presario 2810EA - P4-M 1.4 GHz - 15" TFT by
neil1424
Advantages: Fast for a Compaq laptop, not bad price, nice size hd
Disadvantages: bit ugly, not very light for carrying around, quite large
...Compaq may not make the most desirable looking laptops, and this most certainly isn't going to make you fall in love with it, but I do like this laptop which I got a while ago for only £700!
with 1.4Ghz P4-M, quite fast for a Compaq laptop, and a nice graphics card (mine came with a 128mb radeon gfx card) games and applications run nice and fast on this laptop
What drew me to this was the 30 gig hard drive also, a definate bonus for my work, especially at this price.
The main problem I have found though is the bulk of the laptop. It is very wide and heavy, not the idea for carrying around. I would probably have not bought the laptop if I had known I was going to carry it around a lot.
The laptop comes with the usual software packages, windows XP home ed., MS Office applications, Windows Media player etc.
There were...
